  1. A lot of people are posting finds and pictures that are usually never noticed and are just simply lost in the depths of the gallery. I'll bet you had an interesting hunt but maybe you thought no one else would be interested in hearing about it. Well I'd like to know! Tell us your favorite find or even just what it took to get there. Feel free to list any that you have posted here before, there are probably a bunch of new people who missed them. And don't worry about trying to top the last posting, I don't have any lighthouses, mountain tops, capital domes, or the oldest mark found either. My favorite find is a train depot mark in a small town called West Liberty, Iowa. I fully expected the depot to be some rundown eye sore. It turns out the town restored it and made into a museum. It was just one of those little pleasant surprises that go along with benchmark hunting
  2. There have been times when I have found a benchmark at a interesting location that I really don't go into too much detail in the "found" note. Such as a depot that has been restored and turned into a muesum. I assume this detail would be what geosnapper is for?
  3. not near the top of the benckmark list or at the top of the benchmark list but below other gc.com goals? sorry, just trying to gage my hopes and expectations, it's getting close to Christmas ya know.
  4. What happened to the topic for suggestions that GC.com was kind enough pin at the top? There were several great suggestions and if they are interested in our input I would like to see a vote for the best request. I like the front page link, a found filter, and such but if I had to pick only one it would be a pocket query style download. Thanks
  5. hmmmmm, tricky one. Looks like one is the green light and then also mentions SQUARE DAYBEACONS. There isn't one large warning light? 1. THE STATION IS THE CENTER OF THE GREEN LIGHT ATOP A STEEL SKELETON TOWER WHICH HAS SQUARE DAYBEACONS AFFIXED TO ITS NORTH AND SOUTH FACINGS. THIS IS LIGHT NUMBER 25470 2. DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1930 (BHR) STATION IS THE BEACON LOCATED ON END OF GLEN COVE BREAKWATER, HEMPSTEAD HARBOR, NEW YORK.
  6. Flying to San Francisco for a little R&G (Rest and Geocaching). Already staked out the Caches and Benchmarks that will let me get in a little sightseeing along the way.
  7. I found only two, maybe three in your area. I'll send you an email. Have fun
  8. I understand the benefits and results of asking, and I have plenty on my list I am working through to gain access, but requesting to photograph a secured entrance for federal prisoners is not at the top. Worst case results might be an FBI background check, Nothing to hide, but let sleeping dogs lie, I say Not every mark is accessible by simply asking to see it. Many, but not all. The point of my post is that seemly un-attainable marks can, through circumstance, become accessible. Have fun.
  9. Am I reading this right? Inside a building on the FIFTH floor? How in the world could this one be used? HT0749 1952 by NGS (GOOD) DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 AT SAN FRANCISCO. AT SAN FRANCISCO, AT THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION OF HYDE AND MC ALLISTER STREETS, ON THE FIFTH FLOOR OF THE FEDERAL OFFICE BUILDING, IN THE GENERAL OFFICE ROOM OF THE U.S. WEATHER BUREAU (ROOM 557), SET VERTICALLY IN THE WEST FACE OF THE WEATHER-INSTRUMENT COLUMN, AND 3.8 FEET HIGHER THAN THE FLOOR.
  10. When it comes to marks located in highly restricted areas, the average citizen has to wait and wish that something somehow will change to allow them access to that mark. One such mark for me was originally placed on the basement wall of a Post Office (in 1934). The building is now a federal courthouse and since 9/11, the security is especially tight. Lots of high fences, cameras and plenty of warning signs. I figured the chances were pretty slim that I would be allowed to snoop around the "service" entrance of a federal courthouse. Just the other day I read in the paper that they are planning to build a new courthouse and the old one will go on the market as normal real-estate. It will no longer be used by the government. Sometimes things do change. Now I just have to wait for a few railroad tracks to be abandoned and converted into trails.
  11. Boy, I was surprised how much work I got to instead of wasting time on the forums. Whew, glad that's over!
  12. They must have thought you were 'revenoors' getting too near their ranch compound.
  13. ah, if I had just clicked on search all. Another one of those skulls with six other founds in the same year. You would think NGS would have said "OK 5 reports a year is quite enough thank you".
  14. "it was near the statue that is in rememberance of the victims of the turn of the century hurricane" I believe that is a virtual cache The Storm. Did you claim it yet?
  15. Here's the area. CROCKETT RM 2 (Looks like the USPS had a mark event in 1989) There is reference to this mark in the recovery notes, but I don't have time to search the rest of the marks listed. "1979 by NOS (GOOD) RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL OCEAN SERVICE 1979 (RCM) THE STATION, CROCKETT 2 1974 AND CROCKETT RM 1 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION AND AS DESCRIBED IN 1978. THE DISTANCES TO ALL MARKS COMPARED WITH THE 1978 OBSERVATIONS. THE STATION WAS NOT OCCUPIED AT THIS TIME. HIEGHT OF LIGHT SHOWN WAS 1.48 METERS."

Was this part of getting out of the ticket for speeding?
  17. Have you tried a search by zipcode ot lat/long? There should be an entry with that designation. Thanks
  18. I don't disagree that a card can provide information and if I was making up business cards about BM Hunting or Geocaching I would be handing them out to friends and strangers alike as a recruitment tool. But when it comes to police it's valid id first. Personally I think a printed data sheet is more 'official' proof that information about a water tower, ect, is being disseminated legally to the public via GC.com and NGS. A home-made card is just one more thing to get the police to accept.
  19. I don't hunt around military installations and neither should any current local.
  20. You need to be able to verify that the mark has the G 247 designation, even if it "just has to be the right one". If you can see the G 247 from a distance you can claim it as a find without a close-up picture. Some mark are just not accessible. I have several I doubt I will ever get to see.
  21. I don't disagree with a "card" to provide information about Geocaching, but if a police officer asks who I am it would not be the first piece of identification I would provide. The reason it was basically poo-poo'd by the majority of Benchmark Hunters in the forum is that benchmarks tend to be attached buildings and bridges, water towers, radio towers, etc. Police are much more concerned about what you are doing then they would if you were loitering in a park or snooping around shrubbery. That would not be the time to give them a homemade card as identification. At least for benchmarks, a printed copy of a data sheet with NGS information is much more believable than non-official ID. Being clear and upfront is usually sufficient. Personally, I think the fewer things I have to get them to believe the better.
  22. Where exactly is it located? Have you checked the benchmark section to see if it is listed?
