  1. That's a different story.

If it nagged me I would check the listing to see what are the reasons for the e-mail, then read the DNF(s) and if I assumed there was no need to check on the cache physically I wouldn't do anything and would delete the e-mail.

If the CHS alerted the reviewer he would come to my listing and see (just as me) that there was no reason for any action. Maybe he would notify the devs that the CHS didn't work quite well in this case.

CHS is just some indicator in the background, I do not care about it too much. I take care of my caches and that's all. :)

  2. If I had tons of caches I would prepare a universal "politely asking a geocacher to write a NM log and how to do it" text and always copy'n'paste it to a message to a geocacher that has mentioned an issue with my cache in his FI/WN log. It is not reliable, I know, and it may take some time until he reacts. But it has the benefit of educating newbies how to do it properly next time. If noone tells them they won't get better.

There is a cap, the maximum number of points you can earn for any cache log is 15 points. We created an FAQ for this and other promotion-related questions.

The FAQ is OK, but the brief scoring table in the friend league is a bit different which most likely lead to lison55's confusion. He actually should have earned 35 points according that since he qualified for:

    + 5 + 15 + 15 = + 35

  4. Reminds me of my DNF on an earthcache last year. :) The earthcache involved visiting a mineral exposition in a town hall of a small town I rode through. The visit is free of charge BUT during lunch break the staff goes out to eat and locks up the entire building. And yes, I came right in the middle of the lunch break. :) The CO had not mentioned that in the listing. Unfortunately I didn't have time to wait so I ended up with an EC DNF.

FYI, I've complained several times when COs have posted OMs for "I'll fix the cache eventually" statements, but they never replied or changed the OM to a Write Note.

When I notice such OM next time I'll probably complain with NM saying "OK, but until then it still needs maintenance" so the red wrench goes back. :)

It might also just be because OM is the default log type even on archived caches. This whole idea of pre-choosing a default type for logs is causing a lot of this sort of thing.

Ahaa, now I understand why I have noticed a few OMs lately that were used just as a message with no maintenance info at all and that would previously be a note. Now I switched to the new logging experience and see that it really is a default log type for cache owners. Not a good idea.

  7. I log DNF after I came to the GZ and failed finding the cache.

That includes the case when I couldn't actually start searching because there were muggles around and they didn't leave so I gave up. That is useful feedback for the CO and other cachers as well. Some use WN for this and  fully accept it but for me it is: I was there and I Did Not Find it so let's turn the icon on the map to a frowny face so I know in the future when browsing the map that I was already here and something failed.

  8. Rebore: your first note was a reasonable opportunity for using NM - the cache got enclosed inside a construction area and was no longer legally accessible. Didn't that mean the cache needed maintenance? It surely did. Why care about increasing the CHS when the health of the cache really got worse?

The second note was okay as the listing had already been disabled. It was just an update on the situation there.

Geocaching.com stores images in Amazon S3, and once the object is deleted there, it's gone. So since the image is still there after deleting it from the gallery, geocaching.com clearly doesn't delete objects in S3. So it should stay there as long as Groundspeak keeps paying Amazon...

This sounds reasonable. I upload images to my caches, use their links in the listing and delete them afterwards so they do not show up in the cache gallery and under the listing. So far none of them has disappeared.

  10. I confess I have developed a "OMG" reflex during release announcements in recent years. But I am pleasantly surprised this time! The edit page looks great. I appreciate not having to go to a separate page for setting waypoints/attributes anymore. I like the way waypoints are handled and displayed on the map now. The choice of OSM is fine as well.

In fact I do not have anything serious to complain about. Yep, just the tooltips over attributes not displaying in FF 57.0.1 but that is a minor quirk and already being worked on. Thank you!

PS: an idea: I am looking closely at the map now. My virtual waypoints are identified by their 2-letter prefixes - why not do the same for other waypoint types? On my "B-17 going down" I have three parking waypoints and it would be nice if they were identified with their prefixes P1, PA and PB. I have also seen caches with several trailheads or reference points and their owners sure would like to distinguish between them on the map...
