  1. The WIFi is just for running and downloading a pocket query. There is a hot spot every few feet in Austin. Viewing the data is no problem with Cachemate. I don't know of any software that will send the waypoint data from the PDA to the GPS.
  2. Going to buy a new PDA. I understand Cachemate will not work on a Pocket PC and I assume EasyGPS won't work on a PDA. Does anyone know if I can: Buy a Pocket PC with built in WIFI and put GPXSonar and EasyGPS on it? Run a pocket Query right on the WIFI PDA, download the GPX file, open it in GPXSonar to view the cache info. Then open the GPX file in Easy GPS and send it via the port on the Pocket PC that connects to a computer's USB port directly to my GPS? If so I will splurge for a pocket PC with built in WIFI. I guess the bottom line questions are will EasyGPS run on a pocket PC and if so can I convince it to send the cache file to my gps via the PDA port? Yeah, I know... I'm probably dreaming. If the answer is a definite NO to the above (which I fear it is) then someone needs to come up with either software that will run on a PDA that will shoot the caches into a gps OR a gps that you can shoot the caches to via IR. It would be nice to travel with just a PDA and a GPS with built in WIFI and not need to drag along a laptop.
  3. 318 logs in 8 months. That's averaging more than one log per day for the past approx. 250 consecutive days. An incredible amount of fun. Never one problem. The Rock That Rolls. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=aa4746fa-a6b3-4074-9f33-4f0bd1cbb21a
  4. I agree with Lowracer above. The most popular caches in Austin are the 2 moving caches. They have what I would almost call a "cult" following. In the 8 month period that The Rock That Rolls has been active, it has had 315 logs. An incredible amount of fun, never one problem. I do undertand the admins' fears about posting these, on the other hand none of those fears have ever come to fruition here. I can't begin to tell you how many wonderful experiences The Rock has been a catalyst for. I have also had a blast with the newer Rolling Blackout. Yes Lowracer, there IS something special about Austin.
  5. My SporTrak Pro seems to work fine under heavy tree cover. Not quite as good as in the wide open but pretty darn close to it. If it seems off a bit I just take a few steps and it seems to lock right back on. I have never used a Garmin so I have no first hand knowledge but there does seem to be a common thread in these forums that the Quadrahelix antenae (or whatever it's called) on the Magellnas seems to do a better job under cover. Has anyone ever used both at the same time under trees and seen a difference?
  6. I got from Waco down to below San Antonio with all of Austin and far west and east, much more tahn I'll ever use ina day's caching with less than 6 megs space used. I have a sportrak Pro but I think the ST MAp has 9 megs space. I also go a HUGE chunk of TN in under 6 megs, from west of Memphis to NE of Nashville, even crossing state lines. As cracker said, it depends on the density of the area, how many roads, structures, etc. My guess is you will have no problem getting the area you want into your ST Map, at least a huge part of it.
  7. Team Trout: Cool. I guess they have had a few requests since my post and they just changed the requirements. If you run into any problems (which it doesn't sound like you will) go ahead and tell them a friend said to mention the execs names I have posted. Hunted down and found my first cache today (in 103 degree heat, yuk!) with my 7 yr old daughter. It was a blast!
  8. That's great news Team Trout. Mine is scheduled to show up tomorrow (wed). Wish I was up there in Maine sucking down some lobsters at the lobsterfest this week. :-)
  9. Hmmm...OK, I certainly wish to help everyone here out best I can, I'm a bit hesitant since I didn't get my CD or Pro yet, as I hate to have a dozen people do this and then when I decide to mail it in they're a bit burned out on "special requests", but here goes. By the way, you didn't hear this from me :-).I'll cut and paste some of my communique with them, this should save y'all some $: Me to Magellan - Today I have purchsed a Magellan Sport Trak Pro and the Mapsend Topo CD. After purchasing the GPS unit, I decided to buy the CD and did so from a different vendor (the vendor I purchased the GPS from did not offer the CD). Certainly you will honor your $50 rebate, will you not? Just because I purchased them from two different vendors only hours apart is no reason to disallow my rebate. After I made the purchases I went to your website to print the coupon and saw that it said both must be purchased together. Come on, I bought both your products today and believe I am due the $50 rebate. Please confirm that you WILL honor this before I mail it in. Tammy From: Pat Allen Sent: Friday, August 01, 2003 11:45 AM To: Tammy Pedroza Subject: RE: Magellan Website Contact Form Yes, just make sure to tell him to say either you or I approved prior to him sending it into TCA for processing! Pat Their reply to me - Please enclose this email with your rebate correspondence. Be sure to state that Pat Allen or I did approve the rebate for processing. Kind Regards, Tammy Pedroza Thales Navigation 960 Overland Court San Dimas, Ca 91773 Tel: 909-394-5000 Fax: 909-394-7050 Now it would suit me if you got them to send YOU an email so you don't mail in mine. I started all this just by emailing them from their website to both customer service AND North American Sales. Best of luck to y'all! Es
  10. Just ordered a Sport Trak Pro which will be delivered here in 2 days. It comes with 9mb internal map. Never cached before. I can get a larger rebate if I also buy Mapsend CD, but never having cached I'm not sure what I need. I'll be doing this in city and country. Do you recommend I buy the Topo CD, the Streets CD, both or neither? Thanks!
  11. I'm far from an expert on GPS units since I am new to this BUT when you compare the Garmin VPS Deluxe to the Magellan Sport Trak Map, with the deal they have at Flying J Estore now, you are comparing $400 to $70 (Sport is $100 there now, free shipping, no tax and Magellan has a $30 rebate) The Pro verison is only $30 more. The rebate jumps up to $50 if you get the Mapsend software also. The software is about $70 at Amazon. That makes total cost for the unit AND the CD about $120 after rebates which is approx $280 less than the Garmin package.
  12. They have them, then they don't every other hour. Just keep checking if they are out. Other good news... I bought the unit from Flying J and want to get the Topo CD from Amazon. I wrote a letter to Magellan stating that I thought their policy of having to buy both together as a package to get the refund was unfair (it says this on the rebate slip!). They wrote back and gave me some exec's name to mention when I mail in the rebate SO you can still get the $50 rebate if you buy both the unit and the CD from different vendors. Now I need to decide how bad I need the CD having never geocached before :-).
  13. OK, I am newer than a newbie. Been reading about geocaching for a few days and I'm already hooked! After some research I decided to go with the Sport Trak Pro, especially at that price. Went to the above mentioned site and ordered one. Went back to the site 15 minutes later and it said "Sold Out". Maybe I got the last one today? Maybe I won't even get one? Also, the Magellan rebate for $50 states that you must purchase the GPS and the CD at the same time. That site does not offer the CD so I guess if I bye it somewhere else today I will only get the $30 rebate. I wrote to Magellan to see if they would honor the $50 rebate since I bought the CD and unit separately, I'll let you know what they say. By the way, the Sport Trak is still available at that site for $99. I would check back in a few days for the SP Pro.
