  1. We are caching the trail Jan 13-15th
  2. I highly recomment this event. I did it last year and had a blast!!!
  3. You are invited to participate in the Third Annual Great Chaparral Trail CITO Event. Location: Farmersville Texas - Audie Murphy Trailhead on the Chaparral Trail (Rails-to-Trails) Date: Saturday March 5th 2011 Time: Begins at 9:00 AM Until ? http://coord.info/GC2MN35 Evening Event: http://coord.info/GC2MN3V
  4. We held this last year and the city of Farmersville, TX. asked us to come back again this year. So the event will be held March 6th. The event page: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...02-7ef6e6fd6cc0 There are approximately 200 caches from Farmersville to Ladonia. After the CITO event you can hit the trail after all of these. There is also an evening meet and greet event after the CITO event that has not bee published yet. We are Southwest Arlington Geocachers (S.W.A.G.) Arlington Texas Hope to see you there.
  5. What is your best guess when it will be published? I made the calculations on a spreadsheet and came up with March 7th. However, this could change as the bad weather on the East coast could slow things down a bit. I wonder if Groundspeak with do something for the 1 millionth cache?
  6. I found my first scuba cache last year. I wouldn't recommend finding it with out scuba gear as you could only see a couple of feet in front of your face plus is was at 40' and the water was very cold. Check out the cache and my story. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...3f-663f34a18fda
  7. Look at it this way, to become a commerical airline pilot you have to have a college degree, work hard to obtain your private pilots license, log hundreds of hours of flight time as a private pilot, take a certified commercial pilot couse either at a private school or with an airline, then work your way up the ranks to captain then there are the hundreds of hours of continual training and simulator time. OR do you think that it isn't fair that your local garbage man can't just walk up and get a job flying the plane you are taking on your next vacation????? IT'S JUST NOT FAIR!!!!! Who in world doesn't have a computer or have access to one and GPSr's are cheap enouph you could sell one of your 5 tv's and buy one. Sorry to rant; I just don't understand because not everyone is able to do something it is suddenly unfair. I would like to gave a hot wife and a fast car but I can't afford it, IT'S JUST NOT FAIR!!!!!!! If you can't afford the toys you can't play. There is no intended exclusion we just are not born with at GPS in our heads. I am so sick of this - "Its not fair" crap. I wasn't aware that Geocacheing was a Constituional right.
  8. I didn't find this one personally, but found it on the website. You use the coodinates to locate a can of grain. You shake the can of grain to get the Llama to come to you across the pasture. The Llama has a board attached to its halter that has the final coodinates on it. This has to be the funniest and most creative cache I have ever seen. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...7a01d&log=y or GC41E2
  9. Here is an interesting idea that the Wisconcin Geocaching Association has done regarding fixing caches in need. http://www.wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Cache_Rescue Dougshep
  10. I had those same thoughts as I was walking into my windowless office at work yesterday (and this) morning as it was a cool 61 degrees with a high of 75 (which for MS is outstanding weather)....I couldn't help but think how perfect this weather would be for caching...but in order to afford the batteries and gas for my car, I had to go inside and work. It's torture.... Only 40 more years until retirement You need to read the book " Rich Dad Poor Dad" and get your self out of the Rat Race. I am serious.
  11. I like the enthusiasm but if a cache is being ignored by the placer, it should be archived and CITO. Then someone can place a new hide that will be maintained and lure more visitors I found this information in the FAQ section regarding reporting a missing cach: What do I do if I find out that a cache has gone missing? If you visit a cache location and the cache is missing, make sure to log the cache as one that you "Did Not Find" so the cache owner is notified. Cache owners who repeatedly receive "Did Not Find" logs should check to see that their cache has not been removed. As a geocacher, if you notice that a cache detail page has an unusual number of "Did Not Find" logs, please let the local reviewer know or contact us. We rely on the geocaching community to let us know the status of caches in their area. ______________________________________________________________ I guess the Local Reviewer is the reviewer that approved that cache initially. Another question possed by Cherokee Bill, "How many DNF's do you need before you report it?". I would say probably 2 or 3 DNF's by different cachers on different dates. I have noticed two DNF's on the same day by different cachers, no doubt traveling together. And if the owner hasn't responded to the Maint. requests after a month if should be archived. I am sure the Reviewers have guidelines. P.S. How Bout them Cowboys!!!!!!
  12. I was leaning this way. Then I read stites1's post and they nailed it. Technicly it's true, we dont need CITO to pick up trash. We don't need CITO events. We dont need an Earth day to do what we should be doing anyway and so on. And yet, we do, because like stites1 said. It's that extra kick that helps is remember what we should be doing anyway. Rather like Gingko Viagra, Helps you remember what the F you are supposed to be doing. That is more of what I meant. Not something organized or a big event but more of a reminder. The reminder (National Cache Maintenance Week or Month) encourages or reminds those that have been busy and have forgotten. I agree most of us do maintain our own. I will from now on carry a maint. Kit. That is a great idea. This doesn't have to be some big deal, you don't have to wear a wrist band, Groundspeak could email all account holders of this effort for that week. Our town has a cleanup day twice a year perhaps a cache cleanup every 5 years wouldn't be to demanding. Missing caches could either be replaced or removed from the website.
  13. Why not just quit your job and become a full-time freelance geocacher? That's not a bad idea. You could shave your head and have Groundspeak pay you to have your head tattooed with the Logo and Website. A walking billboard.
  14. I have noticed quite a few DNF's, damaged containers, wet logs, etc. Many caches are getting really old. Some back to 2001. Speaking for many of us, you hike along way through rough terrain, thorns, Endure heat, cold, water, etc. only to find the cache either trashed or not there. Not a whine just and observation Also, checking the logs of several in your area you would like to get, but there are several DNF's logged and you dare not look the one that no one had found for several months. Would some sort of announced national or international "Geocache Maintenance Week" (or Month) make a difference? How about it. Your opinions? Dougshep
  15. That's not really practical. I see this a lot, from people who don't really understand how multi-parameter sorting works. Internally, the distance is calculated to a much greater precision than it's displayed. It's unlikely that you're going to have two or more caches with the exact same distance from any arbitrary point. So any sorting beyond Distance is going to be meaningless. Even if you cut off the distance at a 1/10 of a mile, the results aren't going to be useful in any real-world way. What you're really asking for, but don't know it, is to be able to do multiple filters, and then sort the results by a specific parameter. And the answer to what you're asking for is Pocket Queries. Pocket Queries are fine for a few parameters. One query I would add would be to locate ones most recently placed within a specific zip code. I guess a good example would be a Excel Spreadsheet where you can sort all the data or portions of the data by a specific column heading. Example: Sort all the caches with in zipcode 76063 by decending date order of most recently placed caches.
  16. Thank you that was very helpful. I will try the GSAK program http://gsak.net/ Dougshep
  17. If this could be done. A sorting option would make using the Website much more useful. If we could sort ascending or decending by more that one perameter - Distance and Date Placed, (D/T) and Date Last Found for example. Thanks, Doug
