  1. Not sure, but I suspect that the scale of the topo and basemapsa may be the issue. But it'll load sometimes and I have to drag the map a bit to try to get it to reload properly. I basically deleted the Navigator off the unit because the Oregon has one REALLY annoying issue that make the navigator worthless.... when you try to center the map the way you want to see it, the info at the top of the map that displays while navigating goes away and you have to hit the back button and return the Garmin's selected map extents to get them back. As a guy who uses GIS professional, this is the worst feature of any mapping tool, the in inability to select your own extents as you see fit, not as Garmin sees fit. Anyway, thanks for the help.
  2. Snow, thanks. But you missed the issue. It was not that Canada wasn't showing, its that is sometimes shows and sometimes it doesn't. As for registering CN, I obviously did that. Thanks for your insight.
  3. I haven’t touched my Garmin Oregon 300 in about 5 months, mainly because of the weather but also because when I updated to 3.22, it started acting weird. Last night I broke it out and updated to 3.60. I’m having a few issues still that never happened before. I live near Buffalo and most of the time, my display shows parts of the U.S. and Canada. However, for some reason Canada shows up sometimes and other times it’s white with thin blue lines. It’s actually very frustrating and annoying. Anyone else have this kind of issue or a solution. I’m almost considering going back to a software update prior to 3.22. The other issue is, and this may tie into the one above, is I have the basemaps that came with the Oregon plus CN 2010 and the US 100k topo loaded. I can’t recall where I loaded them when I did but know one was put on the unit itself and one on the Micro SD. I want to remove both but want to make sure I’m removing the right image files but in the Garmin folder on the unit and on the SD, I have a file with the same name gmapsupp (one is 449,912 kb and the other 46,913 kb). I also have a file on the unit called gmapbmap (50,500 kb). My guess is that the larger gmapsupp which in on the unit is the CN map and the smaller one on the SD is the topo. That would make gmapbmap the basemap (makes sense based on the name). If that’s the case, all I need to do to remove the CN and the Topo is to delete the two gmapsupp files, nothing else?
  4. Not sure what custom maps are to be honest. When I bought this in July, I put the Garmin 100K Topo and CN 2010 on it and have had no problems. The only custom think I have is just different profiles for different needds (rec, geo, driving). Weird.
  5. I updated last week to the 3.30 firmware on my OR 300. I loaded new pocket queries today and they are not showing up at certain scale with certain profiles. I figured out that they show up no problems with the Topo map I have at all scales no matter what (as my recreational profile). But my geocaching profile has City Nav, Topo and the Base DEM and they show up at certain scales but not others. So since the rec profile had no problems, I figures I'd turn the CN and DEM off on the geo profile and leave topo on. Worked. However, when I turn the base DEM map on, and pan arouind, sometimes the caches shopw up,. sometimes they don't. Same with the CN and Topo combo. Also, here's the kicker... I'm in upstate NY and the caches disappear att various scales and pans but they always disappear as soon as I pan far enough to get Canada in the display! BUT, my US caches won't show but Canada caches do on a white background since I have no mapping for that area. Wondering if its because the query returned Canadian caches nthat it's screwing up. Although because it still works with just the Topo mappiong, I'm not sure and I"ve never had this issue before and it just so happens this is after an upgrade to 3.30. Anyone else exeperience anything like this?
  6. "Why don't use make one GPSr unit for reacreational use and make all map products available as purchase?" This continual "new" release of product is nothing more than a way to try to show they're cutting edge, when it fact they're not. We don't need all these CO, OR and now Dakotas and we certainly don't need sport-specific units. Shouldn't one unit be capable of using any available map product. Sounds ticked off right? I am. I wanted some golf mapping for my Oregon. Garmin introduces it's Approach G5 for $499, which is essentially an Oregon with golf maps. But they won't sell the maps to regualr Oregon users. How stupid is that in terms of marketing? The marketing is a gold only GPS. If you have a base GPS unit and let people purchase the maps they want, you'd cover more marketshare. Why would anyone plop $500 down no this unit and only use if for golf when there are cheaper units? As a golfer and avid outdoor person, wouldn't does Garmin expect me to buy two Oregons (the Approach is an Oregon)? Highly unlikely. So why not offer the maps to me? Oh, because you're screwing the Approach buyers out of $500 and want them to feel warm and fuzzy about their purchase and not have them think "Hey, I could have bought an Oregon 300 and added any map I wanted for cheaper and had a unit that I could use for gold, hiking, driving, and boating." Garmin = stupid
  7. Did that, thanks. Thought it would make more sense to be able to actually log a drop or find on the actual TB page than a cache page.
  8. I left a TB in a cache I found already because it was big enough to hold the TB and the stuffed animal it was attached to. Is the only way to show I dropped it off is to relog the visit to the cache? Can't seem to go to the TB's site and drop it off by selecting the cache?
  9. Thanks. Kind of defeatist to then buy and own both sets of maps if they can't display concurrently. As someone who works with geographic information systems, this seems very counterproductive as map layers should work in tandem to get the most functionality out of your data sets. Oh well I guess. Guess a little more homework is the answer for anyone looking to drop $200+ on maps for their Oregon.
  10. I have a new Oregon 300. Loaded CN and the 100k US Topo. Both are enabled but the topo is not showing on the maps? I assumed that the topo would run as an overlay on the CN basemap (I have the DEM basemap disabled). Can they run concurrently?
  11. Price protection is usual for after sale protection, so if the price drops after you purchase it, they'll refund the difference. What's the point of every increasing the price on something if they'll gurantee the lowest price always? But I'll try!
  12. OK, last year I was shopping for a CO when the OR hit the shelves and I put it off. So this summer comes around and I'm heading to the Adirondacks so I'm looking again. I had long ago decided on the Oregon 300 and a week ago I started shopping. I had a list of places to buy from but at the last minute Friday, about 4 I checked Amazon and they were selling it for $249! I was at work so I had to wait to get home. Got home, it was still that price and I started to make the purchase and by the time I got my credit card info and new shipping addy updated, the price went to $349. I seem to recall that when this was introduced it was $499 and the 400 models were $599. Anyone recall. I seem to recall checking Garmin last week and that's what they listed at. So yesterday I see the Dakota is announced (Friday coincidentally so maybe that's the reason for Amazon's quick sale) and the 300 is listed at $399 on Garmin's site? I don't see the Dakota as competitor with the CO or OR but just another way to cover all price points. Anyone have any pricing insight?
  13. There are a couple lengthy threads on the Oregon and I say the First Impressions Wiki but I wanted to get people's opinions now that it's been out close to a month. I was all set to buy the Colorado as my first GPSr when I returned from a vacation on July 13 after a month doing research and figuring out how much I was willing to spend. So on Monday July 14th, I got on to make the buy and the Oregon had blown in, basically delayng a purchase. One of my main concerns is accuracy and the antenna. Can the accuracy issues be fixed somewhat with firmware? Other than the brightness issue, and the accuracy, to seems that the unit is pretty good. Geocaching would be the primary use with hiking and fishing secondary. Thoughts, impressions and recommendations!
  14. Well, after spending the better part of June researching a GPSr for myself, a newbie I might add, I settled on the Colorado. I went on vacation for the last 10 days, get home this week and see the new Oregon model. Now, I know many CO users are ticked for this after the CO launching just months ago. So now I’m in a new quandary. Get a CO like I planner or the OR. Now, I’m not a hardcore hiker or see myself as a maniacal geocacher either. Basically, I’ll use it to geocache with my 5 year old who loved being outside and some local hikes with her as well. I have skills with geographic information systems and assume, maybe incorrectly, that I could use the info gathers in the GPSr from hikes and geoaching and map it in GIS? That would be cool. I’m looking for some input, from CO users and from those who this week picked up their Ors, one what would be the better choice. From what I’ve read on the other threads and G-O-$ers wiki, the OR seems to be a decent product and I can’t really discern one way or the other which is which. But I want to get something within the next couple weeks and that limits the amount of info I can gather on the OR from new owners. So any info, opinions, insight or otherwise that hasn’t been thrown out there is appreciated.
  15. I'm a noob looking to get into geocaching and want a Colorado 300. I am aware of some bugs and issues but also aware of the potential for upgrades and I like the paperless caching concept as well. I've been shopping around and the large big box places like Circuit City and Dick's sell the unit for $499. I checked PriceGrabber and some places, like Abes of Maine, sell it for $385+/- for the same unit with the same model number and say they're new with all factory warranties. If it was $10 I wouldn't care but the difference in price is over $100 but I have concerns over the low costs and the uneasy feeling and belief that seemingly good things are often portents to trouble! Any help or even places people have got a good deal and been satisfied?
