  1. But the log is a "cached item" so all miro's fit that definition. So what if there is only one item cached? It's cached, so meets your requirement of "room for the cached items." A Cache by it's very definition requires something in it to be of some value that someone would want to take. loot, booty whatever. We know that nobody wants to TAKE the log except for the owner so maybe to them it is a cache since it might be loot or booty to them but it's just a hunt to us. American Heritage Dictionary cache (kāsh) Pronunciation Key n. 1. 1. A hiding place used especially for storing provisions. 2. A place for concealment and safekeeping, as of valuables 3. A store of goods or valuables concealed in a hiding place: maintained a cache of food in case of emergencies. 2. Computer Science A fast storage buffer in the central processing unit of a computer. Also called cache memory.
  2. There are several places listed in the FAQ. One of the best is GeoLex TN = took nothing LN = left nothing SL = signed log TFTC = thanks for the cache (Hunt) Yep...I am officially an idiot..Just found it like 15 min after I posted this. Thanks
  3. I am reading some of the log ins to caches and being new to the sport/game I see a lot of strange letters at the end that I have no idea what they mean. I tried looking them up using the search engine but I really don't even know what I am looking for so my searches might be way off. Here are some examples TNLNSL TFTC TFTH TN-LN-SL Can anyone lead me to a list of what these might mean or how to decode them. TY John
  4. Okay, I have to admit I am very very new to this game/sport. I have been watching the boards and finally got a GPS and I am now Geocaching. I have 2 finds and one DNF to my name so I am not the expert by any means. However I have to throw my two cents in. Oh more quantification, I am in Iraq and doing this on a local FOB. Now I know that geocaching is supposed to be about the hunt and find however by the shear name of Cache it implies something with at least a little bit of value. case in point, one of the caches that I found had some magazines in it (heck I haven't read them yet), an army bible that you can get EVERYWHERE, some strange blue tape and a deck of playing cards. Now the mags and the playing cards...okay that is cool...but something that is soooo readily available like the army bible...come on and I guess if you need some tape that is good then huh and of course playing cards, heck yea. Now I just went to my second cache and in it were some sig items like business cards and stuff a couple cheap mini staplers and then the thing that really threw me. A fired M16 shell casing. Now come on. If that isn't trash IN A WAR ZONE I don't know what is. Unfortunately the item that I took with me (a brand new 3M wall hanger that are like gold) didn't fit in the cache so I couldn't improve it but I will probably swing buy some day and throw something in it to make it better. Heck maybe live bullets. At least you can use those at least once and maybe to repel the screaming hoard coming over the wall. I would just hope that people put just a little more thought into what they are about to throw into a cache and try and use some common sense. John P.S. Does flaming go on around here??? if so bring it on.... P.P.S. (disclaimer: yes I know that live ammo is against the rules. With that said before anyone goes crazy I really didn't leave live bullets and I am not going to and finally...IT WAS A JOKE!!!)
  5. Thanks to all that offered up to help me out. I recently liberated a Garmin GPS 72 from some sources here on the FOB and think that it will fit the bill perfectly for a starter GPS. I will have to do a little more research and go with paper and maps and such but this will get me where I need to go for now. It seems to work fairly well and I actually found my first Cache today. Thanks again to all and see you on the boards. John
  6. Well it was placed some time ago and the guy may not even be here anymore since it is a military FOB and we rotate out every now and then but I will log the DNF

  8. Okay. I found out that there are caches in Iraq where I am now so I acquire a GPS from my local supply sgt and off I go. It was recommended that I practice before I go home and introduce this fun to the kids. Now I actually FIND the box. I open it up and it says "Disappointment Cache" (yea was I ever) with a great note from the owner saying how he got into this game and if I don't mind walking a little more I will find the real deal so off I go. It's a mile as the crow flies but about 2.5 to 3 when you have to go around a fenced and barbed wired old ammo supply point. Now I get to within the vic of the cache and wouldn't you know it. Its right in the middle of the new MRAP vehicle driving course. I look and look and look but don't find it. Now it looks like there was a structure there before but it has been torn down and when I look on top I do find a small shallow hole with nothing in it. My question is. Should I write the owner and tell him the conditions of the area now and what I did find and ask him if this looks right? The only reason I ask this is it is a combat zone and like I said there has been a lot of recent activity and bulldozing and driving and stuff at the coordinates so I am at a loss on what do to do. The other thing is how do I log it since it is a two part cache and I found the first half but don't know if the second half is there due to the reasons stated above. Any advice you have would be helpful Thanks John
  9. Are you kidding me? I never even thought to look in Iraq on the geocaching site? Hmmm....If the squadron commander finds out I am landing his helicoptors to look for a "cache" maybe he will go for it. Thanks for the tip John
  10. Hello, I and my family are going to be new to this hobby once I return from Iraq and have been looking at GPSr's trying to narrow the field down. Now being in the military with kids and such I am not rich by any means but I would like to get a GPSr that will last me for a while and possibly pull other duties such as in the car navigation, on the bike navigation or in an airplane navigation. As I said ONLY POSSIBLY. I do know how to read a map and I am fairly adept at driving myself around so these other possibilities are only that. So with that said I have narrowed it down to three units. 1. Garmin GPSMap 60CS 56MB Handheld GPS 189.99 2. Garmin eTrex Venture HC High-Intensity Color Mapping Handheld GPS 136.99 3. Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS 108.00 Yes I am usually in the mind set of you get what you pay for but would like to know if the 60CS is worth the extra money over the other two or if I can do okay with the eTrex Venture HC. I have searched the forums for the pros and cons for these units and must admit that my head is swimming even more so any guidance you can give would greatly be appreciated. John K P.S. the 190 price is about my breaking point for the cost of something like this....MAYBE 200 but that is it.
  11. good day. I am looking to purchase a starter GPS. I am in Iraq and found this wonderful hobby and want to do it with my kids when I get back in a few months for my mid tour leave. I have been looking all over and really don't know what to buy. Any suggestions would be great and what would even be better is if you had one to sell me at a good price. I will have to ask that you will work with me on payment as I can only do paypal from my checking account or if you are a reputable dealer and have a website we can work something with my CC. I can't get into my ebay account since it's been so long I can't remember my password and ebay has been no help in recovering it so if you are listing it on ebay I won't be able to buy it from there. Let me know what you think I should get and like I said even better if you have something for sale. Thank you. John
