  1. A solution to deal with caches that aren't meant to be permanent is to archive them. Awesome catch-22 situation.
  2. The 60cs(x) has a setting for when to have the electronic compass kick in. You can adjust that to better suit your needs. Personally I'd heard of so many issues with it that I stick with satellite compass fix. Saves on batteries too!
  3. I'm not a fan of the POI loader, so I just add the hints and other info to the 30 char data field for each waypoint.
  4. You could always generate the Japanese characters in another program and create an image of the characters. Not sure if that is the solution you are looking for.
  5. What are the chances that someone decied to call the power company and check (or report)? I can't say for certain, but I believe this is what happened. The land around the power company easement is BLM controlled land and I heard one of the rangers found out about the new uses of the land.
  6. Central Arizona is not alone with this problem. Since the change in cache saturation guidelines last year, power trails like this are rapidly appearing all over. What change in cache saturation guidelines? The cache saturation guidelines were re-worded to remove the power trail comment, multi-cache suggestion and reviewer requirements. You can see the changes to the guidelines as listed in this post: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=4233073 For all practical purposes, as long as the caches are 0.1 apart and meet the rest of the guidelines, you can keep hiding caches every 0.1 until you are blue in the face, or dead on your feet.
  7. Not really new idea. F0t0m0m specifically stated that he used the same tool on those caches. Many experienced geocachers carry some combination of tweezers, needle nose pliers and hemostats in their bag of supplies.
  8. Its the HTML Tidy program being really strict on how it wants to see the HTML code. I've have the same problem when adding HTML code to the original cache submittal. It happens every time, so I don't even add the HTML code with the original submittal. I go back and edit the cache afterward and add the HTML code at that time. Doesn't seem to be a problem then.

  10. Most of the ammo cans I hide cost me about $6-10 to fill them with decent swag. The cans don't cost me anything. Most of the other containers I use are tins or plastic tubs I get from around the house or friends and don't cost me anything. So the swag for those is usually just $1-2. Basically if you learn how to find containers for free, then you save some decent money right there. Spend money on paint and camo instead.
  11. I think you'll have a hard time getting 500 people to show up for the event. Seriously.
  12. Very well put. When I hosted our awards a few years back, I left some time between nominations and polling so geocachers who wanted to could go out and seek some of the caches on the list. Not many did this, so obviously many of the votes were from people who had not personally visited the caches being nominated. Another option is to have a panel of judges that goes out to visit the caches nominated and then decides the winners. This is no easy task, so few embark down this road. In the end, Geocaching is a fun game that can be played a number of different ways. Host the awards the way you want and honor the caches that people think should be honored. In the end, people will have fun, some recognition will be handed out, and hopefully (and most importantly) it will inspire others to put some more effort into their cache hides and make the hunt for enjoyable for all.

Do you want it to appear on your profile page? If so, then copy that code you got from the generator page. Then you need to edit your profile page. Here is a quick link to the editor page: http://www.geocaching.com/account/editprofiledetails.aspx Paste the code in there and click SAVE CHANGES.
  14. When I upload geocaches to my GPS, I use GSAK. On their Send to GPS page, there is a section for Waypoint description. This is what shows up in the comments section of the waypoint. Use special tags here to upload whatever data you want. You are limited to 30char on the GPSMap 60 series, so on mine, I use the following code to get the most info possible (sans logs): %typ1%con1%dif1/%ter1 %hint by %ownerName That yields the following info: TM2/2 bushes by Supercacher (Traditional cache, micro size, 1.5 terrain, 1.5 difficulty) The GPS will automatically cut off anything after 30 char, so that's why I keep the cache info short (5 char) then add the hint then user name if there is enough space. This gives me most of what I need when I'm out of the car looking for a cache. The rest I can get from my Blackberry or Palm as needed.
  15. I'm one of them, but I think too many people look at the hint even before they start searching for the cache. As such, I often won't put a hint on a cache I think doesn't deserve it or if I really want the cacher to earn the find. Other times I make a hint just to mess with somebody like this one... Anybody with a Garmin 60 that loads hints into their GPS will get a bunch of useless nonsense and not the actual hint in caps. Obvious this varies by GPSr, so your results may vary, but the Garmin 60 series is one of the most popular in our area.
  16. I've got several in the Socal area at Pyramid Lake. There are also others at Lake Perris. I know of several more up in the Sierra Nevada such as Loon Lake. Check out this bookmark: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...30-234c19a54c17
  17. There is a page in the Groundspeak support site that covers this topic: http://support.Groundspeak.com//index.php?...page&id=115 This and answers to other questions can be found in the FAQ: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=8749
  18. Expect another 1000 or so after the group that is out there now finishes their run. Might even hear about a new record...
  19. I know that several Groundspeak staff are on call 24/7 and can deal with critical site issues when needed. I've seen them respond to issues and reboot servers on weekends and off-hours.
  20. The DNS points to a server at 64.34.166.89. It is a shared hosting server and other websites on that server appear to load without issue.
  21. Let us know when you find an LPC that can hide an ammo can and then I'll be impressed.
  22. I think what you are asking for already exists. Clear concise handling guidelines for TBs and geocoins have been around for years. That doesn't stop people from taking TBs or from them going missing by a careless geocacher. The single best thing you can do with a TB or geocoin is include a TB note attached to the item so others clearly recognize it is a TB and quickly identify it's mission.
  23. From the pinned FAQ found in the Getting Started section: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=1113481 This thread should probably be moved to that section.
  24. From my experience hosting awards like this, once you set it up, you basically become a full-time promoter. Posting links in the forums, notes on event pages, talking about it to people at events. You do this once for the nominations (most important). Then again to get people to vote. People are naturally lazy, so it gets depressing trying to continually get people involved.
