  1. Like many of you, I don't just live and breath Geocaching. I like to participate in other hobbies. Well ok.... some of you live and breath Geocaching 24-7. I volunteered to do a program this Sunday in Warsaw, at my metal detecting club. I am doing it on Geocaching and how it takes you to interesting places that might giv fresh ideas for potential hunting sites for the metal detector. My program is entitled: "Geocaching-An activity that may lead you to new metal detecting sites" Sometimes one gets stumped or in a slump in that hobby like this one. I think taking a break and approaching ideas on new sites to metal detect by participating in this hobby might be a fresh approach. We all know geocaching takes you to places in your backyard you never knew existed. And yes... I have used my metal detector at least once in geocaching. Sometimes a micro in the woods calls for some drastic measures. I didn't see it against the rules And no... I still never found it.
  2. As you may know she has Multiple Myeloma, a type of blood cancer where the plasma cells mutate and start multiplying. This is bad since your white cells are plasma cells and as they are replaced by the irregular cells your immune system starts to be depleted. She is in her week off treatments (3 on/1 off). Her treatments consist of a weekly shot of a cancer inhibitor drug and then an infusion of bone building stuff and a steroid. No chemo as of yet but these inhibitors and steroids have their own nasty side effects... headaches with this particular drug. Her counts (plasma cells) are heading back down into the "normal" range but are still mutated/irregular. They would like the mutated cells to be undetectable (zero) which would mean a complete response to treatments. Since she went on disability, she has been volunteering at the local elementary school in my sons 1st grade class but this week she is out with some sort of cough/respiratory thing. I read in last nights paper that someone from Anderson died of MM on the 11th. It is a fairly rare cancer (less than 1% of all cancers) but you would be surprised of some of the famous people who have died from it, have it currently, or the numbers locally who currently have it. Thanks for asking.
  3. Ya its Phil. The power of the internet or the hazards depending on how you look at it. Make sure to find GCY0PP GCY0TH, both within a few miles and GCY0HD which is within walking distance of this turnaround.
  4. Let's Play...."Name that site"! First person to correctly name that site wins! I know! I know! That is at STOP #1 GCT8RM That be it! Your prize is a slightly used Dakota pickup. Pick it up after dark near Urbana I would ask a bonus question of who owns the red shed but that would be kinda difficult for everyone but me. I never did find that cache. Too much poison Ivy. Waste deep is my limit.
  5. Let's Play...."Name that site"! First person to correctly name that site wins!
  6. Recently purchased the 60CX and now ready to get some software to maximize it for geocaching and general use. Basicly it is mainly used for geocaching but it would be nice to use it if I need to find a particular street if caching in a town or even a larger city. Basicly my Initial thoughts from reviewing them on Mapsource View on the Garmin Website: U.S. Topo-East: Plus-Has county roads, creeks/ditches Minus- No streets in even the basic towns and topo lines are not down to scale enough to be worth anything, Not all ponds, etc. City Navigator Ver8: Plus- Has town streets along with the cities. Minus- No county roads, creeks, ditches, worthless unless you are in a only. I hunt in rural Indiana and would like detailed topo maps on the GPSR plus streets, etc. of towns, minor cities. Indianapolis or South Bend streets is asking for Pie. Basic opinion, U.S. Topo-East would work but forget it for actual topo usuage. It is basicly a county road map with some worthless lines for the major hills only.
  7. At first glance one might think the following question should be posted somewhere else but Considering the terain and hunting conditions in Indiana, Do you guys use Topo maps on your GPSR's or road maps? Time for software for the new 60CX. Not sure which I want or the pros/cons.
  8. Found 3 FTF this morning courtesy of Buddaman! Not bad for 45 minutes of caching. Just don't tell the kids we went caching after they got on the bus. We figured they wouldn't want to go to school
  9. Lagro is home to the premier scenery cache in North Indiana, the HANGING ROCK cache , and gateway to Patrick's Waterfalls Series... Already found the Hanging rock cache. Mr. Incredible was there at the same time and I thought he was going to jump. I kept reminding him he "really" wasn't Mr. Incredable. Haven't done the waterfalls but probably involves significant walking which is not possable for some of the team.
  10. We hit and surpassed Our measily 100th cache find today on our way back from early Christmas get together with granny before they head south for the winter. Always new Lagro had some sort of purpose. Just had to figure out what it was for. Guess it was #100 & #101
  11. I think we will try to hit at least 4 so we can hit our measly 100th cache.
  12. Not sure which cache but While hiking in Potato Creek Saturday I came across some geocache items including team Shydog card and Dikndi card on the north side of the lake south of the nature center. I am sure the owner will eventually figure it out but a cache had been muggled there.
  13. Indiana Ghost Town Quest
  14. I'm busy trying to do maintnenance. Maybe this weekend. My caching may be done for awhile. Wife just got the call yesterday that her cancer is back. Treatments start next week.
  15. [ how will we know you gunpowder ? Star I believe I was standing right next to you at Salamonie Dam. I am the one who looks like he would rather be out geocaching? Look for an ugly dude with a beard. Hopefully there will be a good crowd attending so I won't stick out. Ask around for Mike the Executive Director. Wildrumpus will be around too. She is a board member. She was passing her log books from her archived park caches around the table tonight at our Park board meeting for all to read the logs.
  16. There is no geocaching event this year but if anyone is interested and looking for something to do, Potawatomi Wildlife Park is holding a Fall Gathering event this Saturday Oct. 14th from 10am to 2PM. Event includes tour wagon tours of the park, speakers on wildlife rehab, local Potawatomi Indian village history, and saving the American Chestnut, kids activity tent, solar observing and radio telescope demonstration, unveiling of our new "final bout" full body locked bucks taxidermy display (13 & 16 pointers), and canoe ($) and powerparachute rides ($) (weather permitting) and food. Entry is free. I would have liked to have had a geocaching part to the event but at least there are 11 geocaches in and around the park for your enjoyment. We are thinking of maybe a spring geocaching event. www.getintonature.com for directions
  17. If plans go as planed... they never do. Sunday, I hope to use my wife's new 60CX to check cordinates on one of my caches and try to nock off some IGTQ's in Huntington County.
  18. Still not a bad price for a CX. Mine showed up yesterday. Did the same deal ($289.99 after rebate).
  19. It is simpy WRONG to assume that just because a place is not specifically designated as a camping area that it is illegal to spend the night there. I am refering to the state of Indiana/DNR in my quote. Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse and the DNR will gladly notify you of that. The IDNR has specific rules related to where you can camp on ALL their property. For instance, the boat ramps on various rivers have had people camping at times even though it isn't allowed by the DNR. It isn't posted but the police or CO will stop and ensure you pack your stuff up per their enforcement. Related to utilizing DNR properties for astronomical observing, You can observe on DNR properties but if they catch you sleeping... out you go! They consider that camping. Tent or no tent. My point is not to assume but to find out. Just because the sign, brochure, flyer, or magazine doesen't mention it doesn't mean they don't have a rule or law addressing it. Its the government, they have a rule dealing with everything. RANT BEGINS (In general for educational purposes/not at previous poster or anyone in particular)*** My interpretation of this thread was the intent to go camp where ever you want in secret regardless of public or private land. Having grown up in a family with substancial agriculture land holdings along the river I have little patients for those people who think they have access to the river for fishing, camping, access to the woods for hunting-mushroom or animal, tresspassing in general. Every square inch of the US is owned by somone or a state or Federal entity. You wouldn't want me parking my car or sitting on your porch, don't do it on mine. The river water may be public property but the dirt under it to the middle and the bank is mine. That also means that island is mine too if it is on my side of the middle. ****RANT OVER I manage a privatly owned park now. You would be surprised, or you wouldn't, how many people assume they can do "insert activity here" because it isn't in the small brochure. We do have lots of things you can do but if we listed all the prohibited activities in the brochure or had signs made you would be reading a magazine or couldn't see the park because of the signs, which would create a negative atmosphere making people wonder what they "could" do.
  20. Big R, Walmart right now in the hunting department.
  21. How/when did you pull that off? Buy.com now lists the 60Cx for $304.99 after rebate. I was looking at GPSonline but found Buy.com was cheaper after all deals. I assume the 304.99 is arrived by $399.99 -15.00 First time buyer $384.99 -$30.00 Credit Card sigining rebate (30% savings up to $30) $354.99 -$50.00 Garmin Rebate $304.99 Final cost I can do you one more. I get 1.2% off for buying through a shoping group. The savings goes to a non-profit of your choice that is registered there. My Choice: A nature park that is pro geocaching! $4.26 donation ($354.99 x 1.2%) Anyone apply for the creddit card at Buy.com?
  22. Looks like we are about 110% for leavinf a hint. I hunt with a 6 and 8 year old. Got to the point that the kids ran out the door before the van was in park and had the cache brought to the van before the seat belt was off. HMMMMMM. I will rent them out Myt 6 year old can name every hide and most every found cache. I am luck to remember the on button on the GPSr at times I want the caches found but I do enjoy seeing a stump once in a while or at least a note that they were puzzled and then found eventually. I guess a note that reads "Found It-I couldn't find it at first so after a long attempt, I had to use the hint" "Thanks for the great hide!" will give me much satisifaction over.... "@$%$&*&@* geocache hider". Thanks for the nice thread participation on an important subject.
  23. I know what your saying. Would 2 DNF's out of 11 be acceptable? I guess the ultimate question is if you were hiding 11 in a small close area would you make 1 or 2 of them tough for the more experienced cacher to appreciatge?
