1. quote:Originally posted by Stu & Sarah:It would be great if there was a list of caches which needed adopting. That way we could see if we could help out by adopting them. Sarah What an excellent idea! With all of the discussion regarding the quality of the caches in place etc, wouldn't it be an excellent idea to have an area on gc.com web site where people could put caches up for adoption? When people move, rather than archiving the cache could be kept going. When other commitments come into play... the list is endless. What do you all think? Jeremy, is this something that can be done? A new gc.com feature, a search for local caches for adoption in your area! Eagles may fly high, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines…
2. ...just one little thing to add... I switch between the two, use British Grid to find where you are on an OS Map if you get lost (also useful if you are going on a serious walk). And WGS84 for Geocaching. I use a Vista too, with lots of bits of software, and constantly switch between the two formats. If you ever get into trouble and need rescuing, so I believe from the Mountain Rescue guy I bought my GPS from in Fort William, they like you to quote in British National Grid (BNG not to be confused with Bearing). So know how to switch your GPS! Cheers, Good luck - your about to have a whole lot of fun! (P.S. Check your firmware on your Vista is up to date from the Garmin web site - (www.garmin.com) - the newer version give you better reading from the European version of WAAS - so you get a more accurate reading). 3. Trouble is that everybody is right! There will be times that you can’t sign the logbook, for any number of reasons. But it would be worth stating why when you log it on the web site. We enjoy reading other peoples notes in the logbooks when we find / maintain a cache. But at the end of the day, the only reward you get in this game is finding the cache. Okay you might want the kudos of reaching 100, 200 or more. But if you are cheating then and logging lots of finds that you haven’t actually made – you will be found out. We all seem to be getting bogged down in the semantics of what is the find of a single cache. The cheaters aren’t the people who “interpret” a single find; it’s the people who are just spoiling it for all of us making armchair finds! There are a lot of people who feel passionately about Geocaching out there, and Geocachings success comes from each of them feeling that it is “their” game. But at the end of the day, the rules are quite loose so that anybody can play the game from families, to teens to OAP to people with mental or physical disability to Rock climbers to People who haven’t wanted to walk very far for years. Each individual can play the game to their own standard, and each enjoys their own achievement at getting out there and playing the game. …We’ll put our soapbox away now… Eagles may fly high, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines…
4. ...Take it you've visited the Inside Out cache at Kingsley Vale? Abi did this one on her own, she was on a walk with her sisters earlier in the year. She really wants to go back as it was such a nice location. Eagles may fly high, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines…
5. Now this is all getting a little serious! Calm down! If we were ever in doubt over logging a cache we would post a note here and see what you guys and the owner thinks before logging it as a find. This whole thing is a bit of fun; it's not a race! But I would want to keep in the spirit of the game - it's a community thing. Common sense should rule here! P.S. We are going back to "The first cache in Wales" and we WILL find it this time!!! (Hopefully) Eagles may fly high, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines…
6. Bit of a different way to get started in the cache placing business! As there weren't any objections, we adopted the cache today, and have updated it's details. We promise to look after it and look in on it once in a while to check that all is well! Thanks everyone! Dean&Abi P.S. Bogtrotter - please feel free to come and reclaim your cache at any time!
7. I use Memory-May Navigator with my eTrex Vista and iPAQ and find them excellent. I believe this is the same software as the navman but without the GPS jacket. Wouldn't be without them, but you do need to do all your own route planning! I find it very useful to use the GPS as a compass with pointer and the iPAQ as a map showing you where you are. Have a think about it as with a £20 - £30 lead and £160 of software it might be a cheaper solution? Cheers, Dean
8. We recently visited "the first cache in Wales", and having spent nearly 3 hours looking were convinced that somebody had removed it. Especially when looking back at the logs and the three people before us not being able to find it... Sure enough a few days later we saw the note of the next team out to the cache... "Went straight to it!" Look at the number of times you see a note of found it on the second / third attempt, it just like when you can't see something for looking. If you find it and open the lid that's a find (just for those situations where the log is full or the cache is full.. of water ). Going back to the days of letter boxing, if you didn't have the stamp in your book, you hadn't found it! There will always be odd situations – but it’s the sprit of the game that must be adhered to. It relies on an honour system, whereby you declare a cache as found, when you’ve found it! Would I be right in thinking if, the person who owns the cache deletes your “found it” note, your stats get altered? That way the owner can check that all the people who claim to find a cache have written in the logbook – if there is no sign of them in the logbook, then they are removed? Cheers, Dean
9. Sorry Guys for not posting this sooner, I nearly missed this little corner of the UK! (Thanks for the gentle prod Eckington) After talking it through with Abi, we decided that we would like to adopt the Under Wheels Over Water cache near East Grinstead. I have tried to contact Bogtrotter (along with others I believe), and ask their permission but to no avail. As the cache had been vandalised, and was relatively close to home, we have been out to the cache, added a log book, checked the location, and re-stocked it. Unless anybody raises an objection, then we would like to look after this cache on a permanent basis? (Please contact us on geocaching@yealands.fsnet.co.uk - if you have any questions or concerns) Many Thanks, Dean&Abi
