  1. I was also looking on the old domain, strange he hasn't put the new link there as it is the one you get when doing web searches Thanx kptom
  2. The problems you are having is normal and IMHO adds to the fun of caching.
  3. It's just a rant from someone who was mad, man. I would leave the post there, censorship is bad, m'k.

    Snow

Some of the cache descriptions and logs will mention if it is winter friendly or not. Try those first. After those,,,, buy a shovel
  5. Imajika: Once you start caching and share some experiences with friends you may find they want to join you. Friends that I have taken have started caching on their own as well. A couple got a GPSsp for X-Mass also and will be joining our ranks. Others have asked me to call them whenever I am going after the deep woods ones so that they may join me too. I guess that is because I am more enthusiastic about that type of cache.
  6. The file is NOT there, it has nothing to do with the software you are trying to download it with. I'll take an E-mailed copy too though.
  7. I use my Legends map page when I am caching. I set the map to north up all the time, use the goto function and align the GPSsp to north when I am close. Points right to the cache! I use a compass to align the GPSsp with north. So no an electronic compass is not important, but but I am sure it would be nice.
  8. Epoxy will work if it is not exposed to the sun. Epoxy will melt in the hot sun, in the shade it will be fine. Silicone will stick to most anything and isn't affected by changes in temperature as much.
  9. 1) A lot of cachers go alone, myself included. There is a whole thread on these forums dedicated to just that 2) Yes/No they do record altitude but the accuracy is not very good, some have altimeters built in but those are affected by barometric pressure. 3) For maps you must use the manufactures software. There is a wide selection of software for way-points, tracks etc. 4) I use a Legend, and yes it is good for all of that. It doesn't do autorouting but you can lookup addresses in it etc. 5) Dollar store stuff mostly. Do a few caches first and you will get the idea. Hide them near my house
  10. I have a cache like that. The more 'hard core' cachers spent a few days searching for it. Not many are going to search for it and fewer will find it, if you don't mind that go and place it. I eventually had to draw a diagram on how mine was hidden for the first finder. At the last event cache here it was talked about quite a bit. Don't worry about those that complain about the difficulty, just make sure it is rated as difficult. There are many more cachers that like the 1/1 beside the road cache then difficult or long caches. I only do 1/1 beside the road caches to get them off my not found list, I don't like those easy ones that are not even in an interesting spot. Easy and in a nice location, ok, but where they stopped their car at random, no. Difficult for the sake of being difficult? Sure! I am trying to come up with a cache based on the ratings system of what makes a 5/5. I think it would have to be a multi so I can avoid doing a 5 level hide after crossing level 5 terrain. As many will agree if the terrain is overly difficult the cache itself should be easily located.
  11. That's what that does? I though my printer was broken when it wouldn't print any reports. Making it so easy to report posts must be hard on the overmoderators. They must have something better to do.
  12. Firewood isn't a good trading item. Besides the weight it won't fit in most cache containers. Small dollar store items are good, but unusual items in the same 'price range' are better IMHO. People tend to start trading the same stuff from dollar stores here, it's a treat to find some item that the dollar stores don't carry.
  13. The download link doesn't work. I e-mailed him a couple days ago, haven't got a response yet.
  14. I am also considering changing the first multi I placed into a traditional since the difficulty of finding the final stage has proved to be more difficult then I thought it would be. Also the trails the first part goes through would be a good place to place a winter friendly multi. I guess I should take this up with my approver after I place the multi this winter. (Crossing lakes is easier in the winter then going around in the summer, too bad for summer only cachers)
  15. That is insane. Why close part of a park because someone saw a wolf? Wolves are not a threat to people. You have a better chance of being attacked by someone's pet goldfish.
  16. I just don't get the high level of censorship on the forums to begin with. Deleting off topic posts or closing threads instead of a simple mention that it is going a little astray is overkill. I realize this may be normal in the country that hosts the forums but it seems excessive elsewhere. 'Tattooing' users with warning meters would be questionable elsewhere as well. But that is off topic. Lighten up. Eat some lard. (Oxymoron)
  17. We have bears, moose, skunks, porcupines, mosquitoes, bees & wasps etc, lobsters, deer, bobcat, cougar, coyote, bats and deerflies. No dangerous snakes or spiders though (black widows but nobody has actually seen one) All the other wildlife is harmless, mostly. I've run into all of the above except a moose and that is only a matter of time. The only cougar I ever ran into was in a bar. I did have a snake drop on me once. Bears seem to be most frightened by people in the above list, but they do growl at you before they run away. The chance of seeing wildlife is the single biggest draw to geocaching for me. I prefer the caches that take me to areas where I may see them. Some consider them hazards, I consider them a bonus. Now hunters, that's a different story! Beside I always carry a bear bite kit.
  18. Hi-Tecs here. I just tried on a bunch, found the most comfortable and bought them. Didn't know about what brands where supposed to be good until after purchase. Found out then that I had mad a good choice. Just bought some winter hikers from Wal-Mart though. Not much of a winter person so I didn't want to spend much on them. Stone Dry brand $50.00 Comfortable too.
  19. I am trying to come up with a way of working in a DVD video to a cache. You can do quite a bit with the menus and such. Don't worry about computer viruses. Ask yourself what is the worst that could happen? Would you survive that? Most viruses are fixed by a simple utility. Did life as you know it end because of the 2K bug? If you are still truly concerned about viruses, stop using Microsoft products (including Windows) These are by far the most often attacked products out there. There are over 71,000 known viruses. 579 affect the Mac; 553 of those are Microsoft Office macro-based; Remaining 26 work only under pre-OSX; 0 affect OSX Stats are similar for other non Microsoft OSes. I'm not bashing MS it's not their vault, just saying if you are paranoid of viruses maybe you should run something else. I just noticed bons post. Or what he said.
  20. Yes the Legend is the same. I had forgotten about that 'feature' after flashing an upgrade. While I was setting up a event cache I kept marking a way-point and having my Legend then say I was 80 yards away from it without moving. LOL
  21. I once read an article on the proper use of WAAS. I had it in a file and if I can find it I will make it available. In short it stated the receiver should be left with a constant lock to one of the WAAS sats for 20 mins to 2 hours (I don't recall the exact amount of time) before using it for the 1st time. This did not have to be repeated every time you turned it on. Only if it had been left off for an extended time (a week or month don't remember that either) This allowed it to receive all the longer term data for all the sats. If this was not done then WAAS could actually degrade the accuracy of the receiver. Before reading and trying this I was not happy with WAAS at all, now I am. Before After WAAS does work, just don't turn it on and expect it to start working immediately. This also explains why there is so much disagreement on whether it works or not.
  22. I used a IIIx (4 meg not 8 like the xe) for caching and found it was more then enough so I would say yes it will do the job. As far as 50 bux sounds fair but then again we are in different countries. I knew the answer to the question to the ultimate answer of life, the universe and everything was 42, didn't know the meaning of life was 32. Somehow that makes sense.
