  1. Then shouldn't popularity be set to 100% by default? I had not changed anything and at first view found nothing. As one learns their way around the website they would eventually find this popularity filter and set it as they wish.
  2. Being an early beta I realize you will have bugs to work out. I didn't see a thread to report them to so.................... The directory does not seem to be working right now. I tried finding McDonalds but could not navigate to it. I get Places->Restaurants->Classic BBQ & Sandwich Joints then a list of that sub-cat. There are no other restaurants listed. Sure it can be found by search just not by browsing. Also can you add SORT BY name to the sql so the listing is sorted rather then by index number. It looks random the way it is done now. Sub categories could also get this treatment.
  3. I think a majority vote will not work in most cases since people will just vote against those they do not feel they like and not on the suggestions merit. It is easier to get 'No' vote then yes. Most people that feel indifferent towards a topic wouldn't even vote. The idea put forth by esquimaux of having a set number of 'Yes' votes sounds like a much better idea. Submit the proposal and have it sit in a queue until the required number of votes come in. Set a time limit so votes are not collected over 'years'. Search should allow for cross categories. ie: Clock Towers should show up under Towers, Clocks, Timepieces, Outdoor Clocks, etc.
  4. Many geocachers come across areas used for growing, both small and large areas. Many of these areas are booby trapped. Listing them could warn others to stay away, etc.
  5. The web site is up and running again (about time)
  6. The MGA web site is down due to outside work being done in the area. I expect it should be online again later tonight once they are finished in the area.
  7. I see Prime Suspect just made the same request I logged in to make. Please add a 'Fixed' checkmark to the background option. htmltidy is going to break quite a few cache listings I would guess. Backgrounds are not the only thing being done with head tags in the body. If the concern is mostly closing tages I have a piece of PHP code that will close all open tags around here somewhere that you could add to the cache edit page.
  8. Hmm... Good point. I may reduce the width to a lower percentage to allow more greenspace to show up. I was just trying to maximize the viewing area for smaller browsers. Hope you go through with this soon. I know some people just have no taste when it comes to adding brackgrounds but I have used them as part of a puzzle cache and also kept the colour the same as the standard background so it blends in with the colour scheme used by gc.com. I don't mind fixing the colour but would like to see this changed back.
  9. A 25 to 9 pin adapter is not intended to translate parallel to serial. It is for 25 pin serial to 9 pin serial. hope you didn't break anything doing what you did. Order a USB to serial adapter, purchase a different GPS or laptop. Sorry but those are your options. The adapters can be had for ~ $20, use your choice of web search. I bought mine for $12 about a year ago, don't remember where though.
  10. The prompt has been disabled. We were having security problems that lead to the prompt being added. The thread was readable even with the prompt which disappears after a short time. Had you read it you would have known that. I forgot it was even there.
  11. There are lot's of local cachers! By the time I heard about it you had already contacted them and Groundspeak ad donated a GPSr. This thread is where the local discussion is. Several local cachers can be contacted there and many of them would be more then happy to be involved. Many of them close to that area.
  12. Yes there is. My sig contains a link to the web page. This is also been discussed there in this thread.
  13. This is the accuracy based on type. Getting any better EPE than this is based on having a better then required lock and/or the marketing department of the GPSr manufacturer. Non-WAAS corrections 15 meters NPA-WAAS corrections 7 meters PA-WAAS corrections 3 meters DGPS can give much better readings depending on the system used. Duel frequency GPS used by the US military has been claimed to be much more accurate. None of the claims I have heard are reliable though.
  14. Winter friendly usually means hanging in a tree or under a bridge.
  15. That link is for NPA WAAS (no atmospheric data used) which is accurate to 7 meter unlike PA WAAS (using atmospheric data) giving 3 meter accuracy. The VPL chart shows about the same as a PA chart would.
  16. We could arrange a local to demo how we have to depend on a GPSr (unlike her) to find caches. I would also like to thank Groundspeak for donating the GPSr. And everyone else that offered. coast2coast2coast: Thanx for all you've done so far. Hearing from someone on the other coast about the find must have just added a little more to their experience. If only I found Geocaching this way!
  17. Non Precision Approach and Precision Approach, the terms are usually used when discussing vertical accuracy of the WAAS system. Sometimes considered to mean Non Precision Accuracy and Precision Accuracy.
  18. There is more then 1 level of WAAS. NPA and PA. NPA is accurate to 7 meters compaired to 15 meter non-waas. PA is 3 meter accurate. There is 99.9% coverage of NPA WAAS in Canada, this is the same as the USA. (Percentage is for time available to that location). There is some PA coverage in some parts of Canada (usually close to the US boarder). Using WAAS in Canada is generaly not as accurate as in the USA but is more accurate then not using it.
  19. After a delay caused by some server issues I got around to doing this. It works just fine and since Mapsource caches the map data while you are working on it there is very little performance degrading. I have 5 different Canadian mapsets and some custom maps on one DVD with room to spare. This frees up some much needed space on my laptop's HD. This should also work so that you could keep the map data on the original CD's if you don't have a burner allowing you to use the full set. If you need more details tell me what mapsets you want to use and I'll provide better instructions.
  20. Just what I like simple and work very well. This also works in Apple Safari, just drag and drop to the bookmark bar before it will work. I like it and would like to mirror it on own site. (full credits to as77 of course)
  21. I don't think the auto responder in Mailman is what he is looking for. He wants it to respond 'if someone posts something inappropriate in the subject line'. I could be wrong but I don't think Mailman's autoresponder is for that but more for serving FAQs and such. I am running mailman on my server but am planing on removing it since we have moved over to a forum. I do remember when I installed it that it is possable to run it on a dial up. It will use POP email account and can be set to check on whatever time sheduale you set allowing you to run it on a 56k connection if you don't mind it dialing out once in a while.
  22. I don't think you will find a free service or even a paid service to do this for you. You could set up a free list service so you moderate the all posts then run all the incoming mail through a script to do what you want then give the list permission to post the message. Of course this will require you to write the scripts and maybe a bit of code. If you use a shell account to do this it will be near real time and not tie up your connection either. Personaly I would think it would just be anoying to receive the autoresponses anyways. E-mail is full of spam as it is.
  23. I haven't done this but see no reason why it would not work. I'll try it tonight if I can clear enough space on my laptop for the full mapset. Install the full mapset. Burn the C:\Garmin\CT2 directory to a DVD. Delete the C:\Garmin\CT2 directory. Edit the subkeys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families\Topo Canada v2 to point to the DVD. Run the maps from the DVD. If you don't have a DVD burner or your laptop won't read a DVD then do the same on CD-r for each area. Either way it will probably run a little slower but then again laptop HDs are not very fast to begin with. If you want more detailed instructions I can post them after I get a chance to do this myself.
  24. I placed this cache with winter caching in mind. We also had quite a bit of snow when I placed it so it ended up being quite high in a tree come spring time. For this coming winter I found a marsh with a tree in the middle where I will be placing a cache once the marsh freezes. Hopfully the summer only cachers will be able to see it but not retrieve it. Top of ski hills are also a good spot for winter caches, let those that are willing to get out in the winter ride the chair up.
  25. Guess not. I use an href to place a link to another cache page. Earlier today it was changing the link to point to just 'hide and seek a cache' page. Now gc.com has it changing the link to point to the cache page the link itself is on. The link is still correct in the 'edit this cache' page but when the page is viewed it has been changed to point to the cache page it is on.
