  2. Lucky you , Arran is gorgeous and I'm sure you'll want to stay forever.....If you look at the finders of the caches on Arran,(and some of the placers) a pattern emerges .....by and large they are cachers on holiday.... I know you can access most of the caches from the bus , though this might require quite a bit of "hanging around" but the main reason Arran isn't well visited is the cost of taking your car on the ferry...last time I was there ...about 3 years ago it was £57 for car + driver....(currently just over £50 but the summer prices are steeper) Similarly with Kintyre, a cache on Kintyre shows as 32 miles from me ....this is actually a drive of over 110 miles....and yes the cache density is proportional to the number of cachers.( i.e.....Team Balibeg.... who have 60 miles of peninsular to themselves ) Ps take plenty of Advantix for the dog, Arran does have a large deer population, and unless treated, dogs will be infested with Ticks...... oh ....and don't drink too much "Arran Blonde"
  3. The West of Scotland "Worthies" ... would like to invite everyone to this event:- Scottish Cache Bash 2007

  5. Oops ..... subtlety and humour aren't easily expressed in the written form...... I use the A76 regularly ( every other day ish ) ...... and the expression wasn't intended as a comment on its existence ...purely about its functionality as an A road.................. ...the A75 is well known as a heavily used road for HGV's and a recognised accident blackspot in desperate need of serious improvements... sorry sorry sorry for the confusion...... once again ..... sorry Slainge FFB
  6. Hi Team Balders, Arran is a magical place and you’ll want to stay forever….. Now I’ve got good news and bad news …..good news is that the A74 is now a motorway…. M74… Bad news is that no one has built the A75 A76 yet….. but hey…..there is time yetJ Re route to Ardrossan….. if you are likely to be going through Glasgow at peak times …. 07:00-09:00 and 16:00 –18:00 it’s a better option to leave the M74 at J8 …. Strathhaven ( pronounced Straaven) and take the A71. One cache along the route …Blind Harry’s Hill …. Choose to continue through Glasgow, and there are 3 Motorway Mayhem caches on the M74…. The road to Ardrossan follows the M8 towards Glasgow Airport, and then the A737 (signposted Irvine) there are loads of caches a few miles off the road, but no cache and dashes ..a couple worth taking a break for …. depending on time available….. “Jock and Gill” and “Seamill Seals” Enjoy Arran……. Don’t drink too much Arran Blonde Slainge Bob
  7. OK Database Junkies..... here is a wee question for you..... How many download all of France as well as UK? .... ok how about Holland ?. Belgium ??? Germany??? perhaps Luxembourg???? even Switzerland????? .....Spain?????? Ireland ? what ? ...next to no one!!!!!!! Guess the point I'm trying to make is that most of these are closer to the "Home Counties" than the North of Scotland ..... so why the fixation with downloading all of the UK? The ingenious solutions of analysis by date or whatever aren't really addressing the problem..... isn't the real solution to lobby for recognition of England; Wales; Ireland;and Scotland as separate countries with counties....( there is a thread already running on the main forum about this ) Alternatively a short term fix might be to ask( beg) for 1000 waypoints per PQ. Just a thought ..... I'll get back to my flytying.... Edited for spelging
  8. Astounded that so many people rave about Garmin's legendary service.... Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that with so many complaints about defective manufacture, they appear to be more willing to build a reputation for their willingness to address the fault rather than resolve it ? Maybe its just me .... FFB ( magellan owner ---7years ....both receivers still mechanically perfect.... superglue not required ..... )

  10. As a Scot who worked in England (Huddersfield) for 12 years, the quirkiest Holidays were Good Friday and Easter Monday...... apparently in the era of the 6 day week, it would have caused too much trouble for the mill owners to shut the mills down on Friday just to restart on Saturday. ...... So "Good Friday" holiday was the Tuesday following Easter Monday and being the home of Luddites it remains that way till today.... even though the mills have all but gone.....
  11. Yes, California has almost 34,500 caches alone. Not saying it is a bad idea, just giving a comparison. Very true, but isn't it strange that :- Gibraltar with 5 caches, Guernsey with 6 caches, Jersey with 23 caches and Isle of Man with 89 caches All merit an entry as a country in the search page, yet Scotland;Wales;Northern Ireland and England with 12000 + caches are all lumped together as UK......????? 12. Alas Mr. Twigger, lesser mortals are unable or unprepared to shell out the vast sums you paid for.... Billy Twiggers GPSr
  13. So is the No. 1 cache the one with the most valuable contents - or is it merely the biggest container? Or are the people who vote, less interested in the contents and size of container than the learned gentleman Mr. Pharisee would have us believe? Actually, I do appreciate that a cache with a grand theme and involving a lot of work to discover would be expected to finish with a sizeable and well-appointed box. Although an entertaining hide is just as important, in my view. But what is being argued here is not this, it's that micros are by definition inferior: which I don't think is the case. Some parts of the world (Pharisee's, for one) may have a proliferation of leaky film containers clumsily stuck in ill-thought-out spots, but I'm told that than even a poorly-situated, damp and grotty regular cache is superior, just because it contains some bits of dirty old plastic and a large log book with its pages stuck together. Both types should be tidied away, IMO! HH Hi Happy Humphrey, Obviously it would be unreliable to judge on the basis of one sample, hence the suggestion that someone like Teasel or Barry Hunter with access to the data and the opportunity to provide some more detailed analysis which could perhaps provide a more enlightened picture.....?????? However its quite a strange statistic ... nest pas ?
  14. A quick look in the excellent resource :- UK Stats ,and yes I know its all subjective , suggests that there isn't a micro in the top 28 most popular caches.... Perhaps messrs Hunter and Teasel will be intrigued into providing some further analysis ......
