  1. The most important thing .....is never forget to make a note of what you want to remember :
  2. Hello Frank..sadly there are no caches on the West Highland Way ... there are several nearby .. but all would require a big detour ..which would probably take too much time out of your planned trip nearest is GCHHE6 dogmuck park…. Its at the start ...Milngavie ….. its approx. 1 km away everything else is 4 - 5 Km away which I guess is too far. Enjoy the Walk regards FFB
  3. "Needless to say we took it away with us. In future we will poke a stick down a hole before our hands go in!" I believe the technical term for this is "Theft".....Trapping is a legitimate way of pest control. Removing someones property should never be condoned especially in this forum irrespective of your personal beliefs. Legal traps are of the type called "Fenn traps" which do not have "teeth" only jaws ... If you are caching in England , then the cache would be placed on land with the landowners permission .....does it also follow that the trap was laid with their permission ? Hopefully those who live and work in the country won't take offence and reciprocate the "favour" by removing all those plastic boxes with Macdonalds toys.
  4. Well ......even if he had to go to Amsterdam for caches (so he says )... keep it up lad & stop deflowering my caches ! FFB
  5. Updating Your GPS Receiver Firmware (Software) 1. IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE PROCEEDING This page contains firmware updates for many Magellan GPS Receivers. You may not need to update your GPS, but if you want to use the most current MapSend software products you should first update the firmware. Please note: these firmware updates are for North America only. If you are using your Magellan GPS receiver in other parts of the world these updates will not be necessary. A wee extract from magellans site
  6. Moon herb ...dont think you need do anything with a Garmin ( see attached extract last line ) and link to complete article http://gpsinformation.net/waasgps.htm "This does NOT mean that you can be in England, Mexico, Canada or any other location very distant from the WAAS correction stations and expect the USA WAAS corrections to be useful even if you can receive the WAAS satellites. In fact, if you are in Europe, Africa, Australia or anywhere more than perhaps 500 miles away from the shores of the USA, the use of WAAS signals may well REDUCE the accuracy of your GPS fixes. Europe's EGNOS system (compatible with WAAS but for operation in Europe) is in the test phase now and is transmitting a "do not use" flag. Magellan GPS receivers ignore this flag and use the signal anyway (for what it is worth), but Garmin receivers honor the flag's intent and will not use the EGNOS data as long as the "do not use" flag is set." regards FFB
  7. I had great problems with this..... bought a Sportrak pro colour...and it led me a merry dance .....As I understand it WAAS is only operating in the States ...Europe is still "experimental" garmin et al ignore the correction data but Magellan just accept it ..... a couple of great links :- http://gpsinformation.net/waasgps.htm http://gpsinformation.net/main/magellan-codes.txt bottom line is that I inhibited it and the Sportrak works fine .. it was giving errors of 230ft previously. WAAS will apparently reduce error from 12 ft to 3 ft ! hmmmmmmmmmm
  8. Encouraged by the response ….. but then again , its hardly the best forum ( Preaching to the converted. ) Admin , as ever , responded and addressed the anomalies with the speed we now selfishly take for granted……. Thank you…… Also impressed by the “adopt a Cache database” by Stu and Sarah….. sad it cant get more publicity…. Guess the real issue is down to the active users …..We all see the “unavailable” caches which are local to us and maybe chose to ignore them ….. Particularly if they are “logged” …..? Perhaps we should consider reinstating caches rather than placing new ones. Remember … caching is for those who don’t know how to fish!
  9. Wow , start a new topic ? Ok here goes …. I routinely look around the “local” caches which I intend to tackle , its strange to find caches listed which are “permanently” classed as “temporary unavailable” …. I appreciate that some of these may have been sited in the past by people whilst on holiday , so maintenance is an issue , but cant they be “offered for adoption” to someone local if left as “temporary unavailable” for a prolonged period ? 3 months say? The second part of the question is shouldn’t they be permanently deleted if they are bogus ….. eg :- Treasure Island http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...dc-7505876df573 appears to be left by a cacher who hasn’t found a cache yet owns one. Similarly Balephetrish Bay http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...7c-cd47749632ca a deep sea divers cache if you look at the map ….? Time for a tidy up ?
  10. quote:Originally posted by Pooter:My view is that the harder and more time-consuming the trek to the cache site is, the more spelt out the hints should be. When time comes, we'll all be drownded, lad Quite true , but even a 1/1 cache can be a 2 hour drive away !.. The intention must surely be to share the location ....give the player the option of opting out if the search is fruitless! ["Work is for those who dont have a GPS"]
