  1. Typical ! ….. And they haven’t included the check that walkers must be properly attired. …..How often have you just cringed when you see those idiots facing the worst of the winter weather in last years Berghaus !!!! ?
  2. Hi ..sorry I didn’t respond , I thought I had made the point in other threads…..bottom line ..is that Scottish land law isn’t the same as in England or Wales or U.S.A ( and it varies within U.S.A …You can legally be shot for trespass in Texas ..(check the Texas threads) ) So to set a precedent for permission requirement would be wrong (and unnecessary) in Scotland ..Hence the fear / concern that we drift into this. PS ..I did a cache today in “Forestry Commission” ground Ben A’an , and the notice board listed an enormous list of restrictions under a 1982 act ( I think) …. Covering everything from playing ball games to discarding “cigars;cigarettes;or other lit material” and damaging seedlings ….. Nowhere did it make any reference to any activity which could be akin to placing a cache. Lets not make problems where there aren’t any …. Unless you want to place a cache in someone’s garden, Just do it ….. Use the maxim .. “ If its ok to walk there… its ok to place a cache.” regards FFB
  3. Now the thing that gets me ...do you all have your own Gurley meters ? or will you share ... should I send mine ? or will there be enough to go round? Q=VA (but watch out for the shallows ! )
  4. Hi EraSeek, re the quote which was made my Renegade Night about accuracy. I'm sure most European cachers would be delighted to leave Waas swithed on if this were available. The issue is that Waas correction currently only works in USA and Canada ....by the time you get half way accross the Atlantic ,the Waas corrections are unreliable, hence the waiting for an operational satellite to cover Europe..... ( but dont hold your breath...most of us will see at least one more birthday before this becomes fully operational) regards FFB.
  5. No thanks , I dont want further information , the basis of my question was on the need for permission in Scotland . From the information I have looked at , the exceptions are based on damage to property , and the onus is on the owner to prove this .... I would struggle to believe that leaving a plastic box could be construed as criminal damage .....but I'll stand corrected if any qualified expert in Scottish Land Law refutes it ...
  6. Like the Forester, I'm slightly confused ( may be "wee goldie" induced in my case ) To the best of my understanding, there is limited restriction on public access in Scotland...see Scotways though there are exceptions ..damage to arable areas ....MOD property ....foot and mouth etc. and the landowner has the right to insist that you leave (if justified) ( but it requires a court order to prevent your return ) So I'm at a loss to understand why permission needs to be sought from whatever forestry group manages the land .....
  7. 2pence worth......... buy the best you can afford .....go for the top of the range , beit Magelan ; Garmin ; or whatever ....the quality will be remembered long after the price is forgotten.
  8. A tale for all …might have some bearing:- I purchased a Magellan Sportrak Colour ( Europe) over a year ago , and initially was about to send it back because of the errors …. The Magellan has lots of functionality, everything I needed and more …but the errors were huge ( 176 feet ) The test I used was on the local football pitch …..at each of the corner flags and the centre spot , I allowed the unit to settle and “average” for 1 min and took a waypoint. I then went back to each waypoint and checked how far it was “out” …worst case was 176 feet and it wasn’t consistent . Did some digging and found this .. Magellan Codes. THIS IS NOT a MAGELLAN DOCUMENT Seems Magellan just process Waas correction info regardless of whether the disregard bit is set or not . I then disabled Waas by booting up as instructed and accuracy miraculously was returned …worst case 18 feet error. And unit has been super ever since. The follow-up to this , is that last week , the Magellan newsletter recommended updating the firmware ( software) to the latest release which I did , only to find there were 2 WAAS satellites showing , WAAS had been re-enabled ,so I checked against the original test and sure enough it was all over the place again. So WAAS is now disabled ! I don’t know why Magellan don’t give the option to disable WAAS , but if you have a Magellan ( WAAS enabled ) try it for yourself … regards FFB
  9. no ......its not good news ....its GREAT news well done
  10. Actually , the technical explanation is that the downhill pains are directly proportional to the number of hogmanays celebrated
  11. Isn't it awfully fiddley ? rubbing it in to their wee bodies ? Well done all FFB
  12. Well done to both of you ….. and in less than 6 months , now that is impressive for Scotland
  13. Irrespective of the ethics of MO caches , there could be justifiction ....as in ...the Duke The owner has replaced this 2ce ...and has now removed clues to eliminate "lurkers"from trashing it ..... if it were mine I would have made it MO
  14. How am I supposed to find anything now ????????!!!! Re WAAS as has been said Sept 1st is supposed to be the go live date ….current data is being sent with an “ignore bit” set so whether its set on or off on the GPSr wont matter as most GPSr manufacturers check this “ignore bit” and disregard the signal. Except Magellan who read it … hence you could get led a merry dance ( as I did till I switched it off) So bottom line is unless it’s a Magellan switch it on ..if it’s a Magellan I’ll let you know how to “ disable it” ( it’s a boot up jobbie ) Anyway its all hype … 12 feet or 3 feet … wow I’m impressed … and it wont help you unless the cache placer had WAAS and it worked ( remember one of the last caches you did … Waas wouldn’t help… it was a football pitch out ) I’m sure there must be a conspiracy old Poots is putting caches in cities and Spiro has got rid of the wheelbarrow …….
  15. Bin Bags ! How could anyone say they were unattractive !!!!!!
  16. Now its really nice that the visitors are being offered some hope , but the sad truth is "They will have you whatever you wear" ....... only 2 solutions exist:- 1.Don't exhale (its the CO2 that gives you away). 2.Condor ready rubbed .. Hmm tough choice here ...well don't say you weren't warned Midgies ...a preview Whats to come

  19. Some other common W.O.S geocaching expressions:: 11. Yonmultiis daeinmaheidin :-I’m finding it difficult to resolve the clues. 12. Whitthe bliddyhellisthat suppostimean?.............:- The description is somewhat obscure 13. Gonnae geus abrekherepal :- I’m really in need of assistance to find this cache. 14. Seeyonpooter hesgoatright upmagoat:- I’m seriously unimpressed by the quality of one of the caches placed by a local cacher. 15. The baw’sonthesletes an the gemmesaboggie:- I’m afraid I’ll have to post a DNF for this one . 16. Amgonniehuvtae yaseyonspiler :- Unfortunately, despite searching ,I have been unable to locate the cache and will be forced to decrypt the additional hint.
  20. a weegi ! a weegi ! well shame on you ... choochter you! actually I'm a "lawlander" land o'Burns ...Britains national poet ! hahahahaha
  21. Ouch! No "one solution fits all here" I guess .... and in reality, its an impossible task to approve a cache without visiting it Maybe , just maybe, it could be resolved if "1st" caches , irrespective of how many the placer had found, were "validated" by a local cacher ...just a thought ...ouch ! this thinking hurts! And despite the "guidelines" I'm sure the Gruesome Twosome could co-opt someone ... ps I volunteer for postcode KA.... ( that should boost my FTF's)
  22. Here is a different angle Ullium ... Take the PDA and put it in a cache ( give someone else the grief) Buy a box of paper ..and instantly all the hassle is gone ...then you will have time to play with your new 4 piece carbon fibre stress reliever.. Its so simple its inspired ……
  23. Before the thread disintegrates completely , It would appear that of the 400 views , 10 cachers foresee problems with difficult to find caches , I agree this could be a problem. Perhaps if the original post had been read, it would have been noticed that the suggestion was to trigger a “temporary unavailable”…to allow the owner to respond…. ( Owners can change the status back …. So there shouldn’t be a problem for hard caches ….unless the owner has stopped caching???? ) Slightly disappointed not to have found some constructive suggestions .
  24. An excellent example Weight Man , clearly the owner was responsible and responded after the first couple of DNFs ... which is all that would be required of them with an "automated" system. My concern is where the owner is no longer active or it was an old holiday cache.
