  1. Hi, I use a TT One 3rd edition to cashe. I't far from perfect, but it DOES work.. Now, to set up the options for better accuracy and allow for proper lag/long coord entry.. From the main menu select "change preferences" Scroll through the selections till you see "compass preferences" Select that. I set mine for "arrow pointing to destination (helps when in the field for bearing) Now select "set units" scroll through the unit options till you get to latitude/longitude display choice. Select Minutes (d m.m) Theres a deg symbol after the d, I just can't do it.. Doing this will allow you to properly enter the lat/log cashe coordinates. Finish scrolling through the options until done. Your TT is now properly set to take cashing. To enter coordinates, touch the map screen, select navigate to. Then select"latitude/longitude" Enter the coordinates exactly as you see them for the cashe location (including the degree symbol, and decimal point) and away you go. As you get closer, touch the sat signal portion of the display. This brings up the status screen. Now press the battery indicator area. This brings up the GPS staus indication screen showing you your lat/long in real time as you move. Move in the direction you need to to get both lat/long to match your coords, and have fun searching. This is how I've done all my cashes so far.. One DNF out of 16.. Not bad if you ask me.

For those with a Tomtom unit (I use a One, 3rd edition myself) you can add cashes by Lat/long, and save them as a favorite. Then you can set it to get you there by driving, then once you get to wherever it is, be it a park, urban setting, whatever, and your close after hiking it in, swap out to the "GPS status screen" (from the main map, press the Sat signal meter, then the upper area that indicates how many sats and battery strength). Then find that thing, watching which way you need to go by the lat/long numbers. One thing to know. Once on the GPS status screen, select the configure button, and set lat/long display to minutes (d m.m'). This will set the display to match the info you get off a cashe listing. You'll also need to set up the compass direction settings for this to REALLY shine. Set it to "one with arrow pointing to your destination" when on the map screen. Follow the arrow till your close, then swap to the status screen to REALLY nail it.. It's kinda hokey, but it works great for now.. 12 finds and one stashed so far.
  3. I can say without a doubt it can be done. Need to have patience, and REALLY learn how to use you car based unit. Having the SiRFStar II chipset helps too. I use a TomTom One 3rd edition unit. I first use it to drive to the location in regular mode. Once I get to the general area, I then change to the GPS status screen, and with printed cashe info in hand, figure out where I need to go, watching the lat/long numbers till I nail it, or get awful close. Accuracy in GPS status mode can be anywhere from dead on cashe, to about 20 foot off. I've managed to log all my finds with it, and even created and hidden a cashe. Would I LIKE a handheld ? U betcha. Do I NEED a handheld at this point ? Nope.. I'm fairly comfortable using what I have now. The only downside is I have to plan and print lots of cashe info sheets for whenever I want to go..
  4. Wow.. First post on these forums, and I had to use it on this one, only because I use a TomTom 3rd edition to cashe myself. I'll Load local cashes as a favorite, using lat/long cords. then save them with the cashe name. I have compass preferences set to " arrow pointing to your destination" which keeps me on point. For GPS status coordinate screen , I have it set for Minutes display (d m.m' ). This setting gives me what I've found to be VERY fine ground resolution. At best, dead on cashe. at worst, about 15 feet off when I don't have bounce issues. I'll go and select whatever cashe I want to find, and drive there. On the map screen, I use it in 3d mode always, and it will show the finish line well off road, and not snap back to the road. Between the compass arrow , and the map, I do fairly well. Once I get within about 50 yds or so (compass indicates distance roughly), I'll switch to the GPS status screen, and watch the numbers till I land right on it.. Sometimes I have to walk around orienting myself to the numbers, but once I figure it out, I'm ok. I ALWAYS have to have the cashe printouts with cords so I know what I'm after when I'm in status mode. It's far from perfect, and I suffer from bounce, just like the rest of the regular handheld crew, but I'll tell ya what. Even though I'm new to this thing, I've managed to find a few easy ones, and one I spent an HOUR searching for. Todays hour wasn't from bad cords, or bounce (ok, just a LITTLE), BUT FROM A DARN GOOD HIDE!! I knew where it was, just didn't realise how well it would be done, compared to another similar to it.. I'm lovin every minute of this so far, and it gets me in the game... got 5 in the bag already, along with a DNF that turned out to be muggled.. One other DNF has me a bit stumped cause it's an urban one.. One BIG tip. A neck lanyard and clip keeps the GPS fairly safe, and around the neck. It's gotten a few dings, but I expected it. Considering I got it for a song on BackFriday, I'm not really worried. Best of both worlds. I can use it for travel, AND cashing.. DEAL!!
