  1. This is driving me crazy...somehow I figured out last year how to change the color of water to blue in my regular maps under Recreational profile but cannot figure out how to do that when in Marine profile...I hate the default light green color which is horrible to me...I much prefer blue for the bodies of water. Anyone know how to change the color of water in the maps?
  2. did you change the profile between Fl and NJ? No, I left the profile as automotive from the time I left from home for the airport (Newark NJ) till I returned from Florida flying into Newark and driving home. There's no way I could have changed it, if it's not in Auto mode it does not do any street routing when you specify "Where To." Just re-verified this behavior. Drove from my home to Newark Airport in NJ using the Montana 600 in Automotive mode, did not show upcoming turns and distance at the top left. When I landed in Miami and used it to navigate, the top left of the screen now showed the upcoming turn (via icon) and distance. 4 days later landed back at Newark airport and this feature disappeared again. Seems to not work in NJ but does in Florida, I have not had a chance to verify this in other states but will try next weekend. This is frustrating as the upcoming turn feature is very helpful for street navigation. Don't know if this is a bug in the Montana firmware or an issue with City Navigator.

  4. I purchased City Navigator and installed it on my Montana 600 and noticed different navigation behavior and can't figure it out. I've used it in New Jersey and Florida. In Florida when doing routing, the display in the upper left hand corner displays the next turn or direction change plus direction to the direction change. When in NJ I do not get this little display at all and instead I sometimes am right on top of the point where I need to turn off or exit to see a direction change arrow (white against the purple highlighted route) which does not give me a lot of advance notice. Has anyone else run into this issue? I want the 600 to behave the same way in NJ (and everywhere else) that it does in Florida. And I have the 600 in Auto mode for both, I did not change the mode between driving to the airport in NJ down to driving in Florida and back again.
  5. I have a question about City Navigator with the Montana - I've recently tried navigating with it and for the most part it works fine. But I realized there are some things missing or maybe I'm not looking in the right place - re-routing around roadblocks/traffic congestion would be the main thing. Is there any option to navigate around roadblocks or does anyone know if that is in the works for this? I would really love it if I could use the Montana for *all* of my GPS needs instead of having a handheld outdoor unit and an automotive unit.
  6. This also goes back to what the specific user wants. If all you you want is vendor supported maps for North America (excellent US coverage, so-so in Mexico and Canada), DeLorme has the clear advantage -- because they include these in the box. BUT -- while this is a great convenience, it's a bit misleading to say DeLorme's maps cost "a LOT less." There's are huge amount of high quality maps (topo, routable roads, special interest) for most of the populated world available for Garmin, for free. Where can you get free routable road maps for Garmins?
  7. How do you get tides info in the GPS, do I need a Marine map? I tried Where To -> Tides and all it does is give me a choice of tide buoys to navigate to. I found the tables from this link: http://gpsinformation.us/gps60c/g60review.html and installed them as if they were a map. Then the tide data shows up after selecting a waypoint (via the instructions from splashy) then tapping the title block at the top (instead of the GO button), and then the table shows. I had to install the map twice to get it to work, and now that I think of it, I installed it from MapSource rather than BaseCamp the second time. Maybe that's the key, using MapSource as the map installation method. Thanks for all the info! I got it to work without having to install maps, I selected Where To -> Tides and selected the Tide Buoy, then hit the title block as you did instead of Go and got the tide table.

  9. I've had my 600 for a few days now and doesn't seem to have any issues so far - compass calibration went smoothly. Will be taking it for 3 days of camping/hiking/goecaching this weekend and I'll see how it does.
  10. I haven't been here in a while but was downloading some GPX Geochache files to my GPS and the way I've been doing it has been to click on the icon, send to my GPS and acknowledge the Write to the GPS. Rinse and repeat for all the geocaches in the area I'm interested in. Is there a way to select more than one of them and download them? I saw that you can get a LOC file that way but that has a lot less detail than the GPX files.
  11. I don't believe they are from his custom mapset, they are likely the result of an official product with DEM layered beneath that map. What is a DEM?
  12. How do you make those custom topo maps with the 3d relief in there? One of the reasons I got a Montana (besides the fact that my 60csx was stolen in the Keys) was to get that type of mapping....any tutorial or instruction on the web?
  13. I found out how to do it - I deleted those points and tracks in the mapsource program...
  14. I don't know if the Kansas waypoint was or was not there although I suspect it was...the thing is, I cannot get rid of the track point line from the Kansas point to my GPS nor can I get rid of any of the tracks right now...and to top it off they are in bold purple color that looks like the Navigate To line. I've tried to Stop Navigate but that is greyed out so apparently that's not what the unit is trying to do...
  15. I tried all those things and it still stays there....is there a way to clear all of the memory out completely?
  16. My 60CSx sat for about 10 days and the batteries ran down. When I swapped out the batteries and turned it back on, the map display shows a line going from the Garmin headquarters in the middle of the US to my current location, and another line running from my last known location when I was geocaching, to my current location. I went to the Track Log in the Menu and cleared it all but when I go to the map it still shows these two purple lines plus the tracks I went on while geocaching. How do I clear out these track lines?
  17. Okay I have a question...just went on my first hiking trip with my new 60csx and it entailed a lot of ascent and descent - 2877 feet to be precise. We also logged about 6 miles doing that according to the 60csx. Now my question is, the 6 miles measurement, is that as the crow flies or does it take into account the distance traveled ascending and descending which is quite different from how the crow flies and is analogous to measuring the distance with a bike odometer rather than measuring out on a map of the area.
  18. 60CSx + Topo 2008 = $300.00 CO 400t (includes Topo maps) = $475.00 I don't see the savings here. You're right, there is no "savings" per se, just that the 400t does not need to buy a topo map. Where can you get the 60csx with topo 2008 for $300?
  19. I've read the threads, and having owned several GPS units in the past including a Magellan, Lowrance H2O, Map 76S, as well as auto units so I'm not exactly a noob. I was going to get a Colorado initially but after hearing about the accuracy issues, especially compared to the "old standby" the 60csx, I am trying out a 60csx but I'm still wondering would it be better to get something like a Colorado (I don't care if it's a touch screen so that feature of the Oregon does nothing for me). The 60csx is a nice unit but lacks any maps out of the box obviously but the Colorado 400t has the topographic maps built in as well as the 3d maps...which would save me the cost of having to buy topo 2008. And while we're on the subject of topo maps, I've looked on eBay and I can get topo 3.02 for a lot less than buying a topo 2008 - my question is 1) will that work on a 60csx, and 2) is there a big difference between the topo 2008 and topo 3.02? BTW GPS technology has come a long way since the last gps I bought. This 60csx can get satellite fix in seconds from almost anywhere in my house - it's much faster and can hold sat fix much better than any of my older units by an order of magnitude IMHO. So the question remains, is the Colorado worth the extra $$$ for me to get instead? Thanks in advance.
  20. Okay I've had and played around with my new Expedition C for a couple of days now and I've noticed something that doesn't seem right to me. Upon startup most of the time it will find satellites and get lock very fast as it is near the original position where the unit was turned off. However, twice I've had it start a search for satellites from ground zero so to speak before going to auto search - once was when the batteries ran down without my knowledge, and the other was this morning (last night I'd taken out the batteries and put in a new 2 GB SD card loaded with maps I'd made up - as a result the batteries were out of the unit for about an hour). Are the batteries required to keep the information on the satellites for a prolonged period of time? Isn't there an on board battery or non volatile memory to hold the last known position for the unit? Other than that so far I'm happy with the unit. Normally fast satellite aquisition, good lock, much better than my aging Map 76S.
  21. I've never tried this before - I've used and saved waypoints and tracks from my Garmin Map 76S but it's getting long in the tooth and becoming a bit schizo (breaking down perhaps) so I bought a new Expedition C and I want to know if something like GSAK can take waypoints and tracks from the 76S and transfer them to the Expedition C (onto its SD card of course). TIA...
  22. I'm looking at the same two units...for the 76Cx specs say up to 20 hours on 2 AA batteries while the Lowrance specs say 2 hours or more on 2 AA batteries. Is the Lowrance really that tough on battery life or are they being very pessimistic?
  23. I'm looking to get another GPS unit as my Map 76S is crapping out on me. I looked at Cabela's and it says they are 12 channel, but on Amazon and Bass Pro Shops they show 16 channel. Is Cabela's mistaken or could it be an older version?
