  1. When navigating to a geocache, look on the map screen below the blue (+) and (-) zoom icons. You should see a third blue icon with a treasure chest. Hit it to bring up the cache info. This is also what we do, and it works for us.
  2. We have certainly experienced the long cache name/shut down issue. Can't wait until they fix that considering we don't print anything now that we use the 500. I have never tried the pocket query feature yet with the 500; will have to give it a try. Thanks. As for an earlier comment from another poster regarding why switch to the 60 instead of using the 500...the 500 is waaaaay to slow to update the compass. It has literally taken us minutes of walking before the compass updates direction or distance. We switch over to the old Magellan to make the find, but use the 500 for our paperless caching.
  3. We ran web updater, and did the master reset and nothing helped. But then when we restarted and tried another geocache it asked to reconfigure the walking mode. I changed it to off road, and that did it. Thanks for all your help.
  4. We have been happily using the 500 for geocaching, until recently we deleted the GPX files to free up some memory. Then we reloaded new geocaches. Now when we go to walking mode to find a cach the compass option does not show up, and we can only use the map screen. Please help.
  5. We just got a nuvi 500 a few months ago. $242.00 online. It does everything we ask of it. "Paperless caching" Yea!!! This did not need any special upgrades or anything like I see other people talking about with the other nuvi models. I don't know what that is all about. Maybe somebody can explain.
  6. OK. Thanks a bunch. We'll give it a shot. quote name='StarBrand' date='May 13 2009, 07:24 PM' post='3934456'] When hooked to your computer - go into the [drive]:\garmin\gpx folder on the device and remove the GPX files you do not want anymore.
  7. We have a new Nuvi 500. Everything works great, and we have found about two dozen geocaches so far. Can't figure out how to delete them after we mark them as found. (Using send to GPS - sends great info, and we really like it.)
  8. Woodstramp got me on the right track on tomwilson74's post
  9. tomwilson74, I hadn't loaded any maps on my units in a while and I couldn't exactly recall the steps, but I did manage to find an old tutorial I'd originally made when I was at your stage of the game. It's all strung together but maybe it'll help you. Make a copy because it's long. ---------- Start> Programs>Magellan>Magellan Mapsend Topo 3D, click it>insert Disc #3 of the set into CD drive>When it starts running a Mapsend Warning page will pop up, click Close. Mapsend opens....find area you want to map....look in toolbar for a red square box (that's the region defining tool.....Create region>right click in region, name it, click OK...the new region will appear in the white box on the lower right. Check square box next to the new region's name. Up on the top of the page click Regions>Upload to Gps...Upload Wizard box appears, select Store On Hard Drive...a Checking GPS will ask for the unit's serial number (use the Serial number listed in the GPS's "about" screen or use package serial number but omit first and last digits of that number) click Next...A Converting Regions box will pop up and convert the file....Minimize Mapsend Topo.... Click Windows Start, Programs,Magellan, Explorist , Mapsend Conversion Manager, click it....box pops up, select Transfer Map Regions.> Next... then it asks to either USB connect your GPS or Memory card,....do that.....When the card or unit is found a Map Region selection page shows. Select the region you just created (Note: it should have a .imi extension) Check the square box at the left of the region...click Next...it transfers...Click Next and then Finish. It should have loaded the file to the unit or an SD for the unit. --------- Woodstramp - you are our hero! Why can't Magellan make the instructions this simple? We had manuals and user guides spread out from one end of our table to the other trying to make this work before and it never did. Your instructions listed above saved our Explorist 400 from an early death this week. Thanks so much.
  10. The same thing happened to me. I just went and got a 12v charger. But I do think you can charge from the usb cable. There is a screen that comes up when you plug it in that gives that option.
  11. I have an Explorist 400, and my wife HATES IT! I can download geocaches to it from the computer, but it has a mind of it's own when it comes to deleting anything. Magellan instructions are very vague and unhelpful. Is there a written procedure available? Is there a better program to use rather than Mapsend Lite? I can delete hand entered POI, but nothing on the SD card. The geocaching manager that came with it was not user-friendly to say the least. Any ideas to make this thing useful?
