  1. I agree that mapping SW is more appropriate to navigating in the car but if I'm going into unknow territory I still take a map and compass just in case I loose signal or the GPSr packs up. Have fun with the etrex yellow. Cheers, John
  2. Sounds like you have got the right idea. If you want further help I would suggest that you take a look at this web site; GAGB where they offer to give newstarters an introduction to geocaching. Cheers, John
  3. The Etrex Yellow is a great entry level GPS receiver. You can download the waypoints from this site for all the caches that you want to visit then program them into the GPSr. This model's main limitation is the lack of capability to download maps which you can use to navigate with. For geocaching this isn't really an issue so long as you have an OS map with you. Other etrex models have more memory for mapping and compasses etc. Its worth investing in some good NiMH rechargeable batteries too if you get the chance. Best of luck with the caching.
  4. Hope that everyone's having a great day... Merry Xmas from us all , John & The Gang ..
  5. I had to serch the forums too, it seems that if you have posted < 10 times you are captioned with 'tadpole', > 10 and you make it to the dizzy heights of geocacher. I see a strong froggy theme here I'm just looking forwards to getting kissed by a princess !!
  6. Well done MCL : , dont worry Dogastus , you're in good company .
  7. Hi Hedburg , thanks for the offer, I will monitor the ryanair fares in the spring and may well take you up on your offer. Cheers, John
  8. If you would like to come to England, you will be welcome and I will be happy to help you find accomodation and some caches
  9. Hej Hedberg, Well the Trip to Stockholm was very good thanks. I managed to find a few microcaches. Stockholm spring, Sott & Riddarholmen. I tried to find Humble bee as well but poor weather/GPS reception provided too much of a challenge. I Have visited Goteborg previously but it was before I discovered geocaching so I missed all the fun! I can recomend it as a great city to visit. If you like fresh seafood you must visit Fiskekrogen restaurant. MVH, John.
  10. I sugest that you use your common sense and judge each cache site based upon location and likelyhood of risk, if you have any doubts, don't do it. The chances are that your intuition will tell you if the location that you arrive at does not feel comfortable. In reallity it is quite unlikely in most rural situations that you would be at risk.As a safety precaution, you might consider informing a friend where you are going and what time you expect to return, explain to them that if you do not call in ( to them) by a certain time that they should try and call you to ascertain that you are secure and if no contact can be made to inform the police so that they can enquire after your well being ( Plod will normally be only to glad to have confimed that you are safe). Bear in mind that you will always be safer if accompanied bya friend. If caching in the North Hampshire vicinity ( +/- a county) we would be pleased to try and accompany you. Cheers, John & Family.
  11. In case you needed some further pursuasion to come to the UK , a British pint ( 568ml) should cost only 30 SEK in the south and in scotland you should be able to get a pint of 80 shilling ale for about 25 SEK ( the 80 shilling referes to the old tax system on different strength beer. 60 shilling is like Latt Ol, 70 shilling is like mellan Ol and 80 shilling is like stark Ol, there is also 90 shilling but we only clean the brass with that !).
  12. Congratulations from us, sorry that we didn't notice any earlier that you had achieve your Two-Hundredth cache at Ladies Walk but we have been away. I think that Daisy should buy her Man a pint for taking her out so regularly. Cheers, John & The Gang. Tact is the knack of making a point without making an enemy. Isaac Newton.
  13. Hi Capt. M . The trip was good and I managed to find 3 microcaches in the city centre; NMS18 Riddarholmen, Stockholm Spring and Sött. I found it tricky to get Riddarholmen without being spotted and had to return to the site when it was not so busy. Stockholm spring was also in an area with a lot of people walking by and was a bit difficult to find as well. I also tried to find Humble Bee on another day but it was raining and I couldn't get a good GPS signal. Perhaps I will get a chance to cache in Finland some day. Cheers, John. 14. As a native english speaker who can only speak a little swedish and not much finnish at all (sorry) I appreciate that you all can speak very good english. It seems appropriate that if you guys are talking about something that is specifically local then you should use your own language. I would like to say that if you can be kind enough to add an english translation to your cache pages then it is more likely to be visited by travellers. Thanks John Tact is the knack of making a point without making an enemy. Isaac Newton.
  15. Picture 12 is Natalie from The Hole-in-the-wall-Gang. She was very pleased as this was her first cache find. Cheers, John & The Gang
  16. Well , our current target is 100 so 2 tonnes (we are living in the metric age after all!) seem pretty impresive, well done ! John & the Gang It is the season now to go, about the country high and low, a hidden treasure's what you'll find if you can best employ your mind.
  17. Hi Mark , As you are traveling from Basingstoke to Portsmouth, may I request a stop over in sunny Andover. I will be only too happy to make you a cup of tea and donate appropriately. Any other Andover 'area' cachers that would like to meet up at our place or some other mutually convenient spot, feel free to e-mail me for directions and I'll get the kettle on. Cheers, John. 18. memo to self: must type faster next time....
  19. I will let the approvers have the final word but it seems to me that the onus is on you be able to maintain a cache within a reasonable time frame. If you are visiting regularly then that should be no problem. So, it sound like a great idea. I Just hope that I get the chance to visit the caches. Cheers, John It is the season now to go, about the country high and low, a hidden treasure's what you'll find if you can best employ your mind.
  20. Thank you for the information. I shall try and find some of those caches in the list and maybe stockholm spring as well. I think that I should probably take a torch and will practice my Swedish in case I get spotted searching in the bushes. Regards John it is the season now to go, about the country high and low, a hidden treasure's what you'll find if you can best employ your mind.
  21. Hello, I am traveling to Sweden next week and would like to do some caches in the Stockholm area. I will be staying in a hotel in the center (Strandvägen) and will be working in Kista. Can you suggest any caches that I might be able to find in that area please. I may be able to do a quick cache whilst in Kista and will have the evenings free in Stockholm. Tack så mycket. John it is the season now to go, about the country high and low, a hidden treasure's what you'll find if you can best employ your mind.
