  1. Thanks for all the advise I will update you all on my next trip next week hopefully. With recreational and direct routing, ill let you know how i get on.
  2. Then whats the hiking profile for? my god Garmin manual is useless.
  3. I am downloading routes from here : http://where2walk.co.uk/north_york_moors_coast/yorkshire-wolds-hambleton-hills/pocklington-the-wolds-way/
  4. Right guys. I have wiped the unit completely, back to factory settings all fresh, all new... so... Which profile should i be using for routes created and downloaded .GPX files. Under profiles we have : Recreational Geochaching Automotive classic There are more but won't be using them such as fitness and motorcycle The when you guys have told me which one form above.. I will go into setup > Routes and makes sure stick to road is OFF? CORRECT? Route transitions > auto Activity > Direct Routing All good so far? Satellite system > GPS + GLONASS WASS/EGNOS > ON I have uk Maps that came with the unit, the ones that get fuzzy when you zoom in and CachMapUK which is a raster map and worldwide DEM Basemap NR. ALL 3 ARE CURRENTLY ACTIVE. Setting for map currently are : ORENTATION : Track up guidance text = always Options for route calculation : Direct routing automotive driving pedestrianwalkimg hiking mountaneering tav off road Which 1 should i choose?
  5. Tried all those. instead of the beautiful route (which is perfect) before you press go... it then creates random spikes where the route does not follow the preview instead we have lots of going back and forth.. setup>routing> is set to hiking. Why is the preview perfect.. then press go.. a right mess.
  6. Makes my blood boil.. and leaves me wanting to stomp on it. Route is all good including all the paths and snikinets, until you press go.. then no matter what setting i use... blood curdling... what is going on??
  7. So if no point having WASS on does it drain extra battery life? and does it mean that the garmin is not taking advantage of it if it makes no difference?
  8. Oregon 650. Should all those be on when out HIKING? I know a very rough idea of what they do, but does having them all on complicate anything? I have two option. WASS+EGNOS = off or on GPS = on or off GPS + GLONASS = on or off. Can anyone advise me on these please?
  9. I will put this to the test again at the weekend. For my last little trip i got round.. (just) but had another issue.
  10. No checked it. Route to road is off.
  11. Ok so I went off for my first adventure at the weekend. I used a downloaded gps route. I found a big issue with it. I set off on my route.. which made me cross a main road.. all good until i got to the other side and walked 40 foot. Gps loses the route.. so I set it again to be told on screen. Error this route cannot be completed as no roads are available offroad. And that's it. I could not get the route back up. This terrifies me, what if im up in the tops and it does this again I will be utterly lost... Can somebody do a video on the uses, and settings of this gps because again I am still fed up with it. The gps was set to NOT lock to roads. And it was set to recreational and set to hiking mode. 2nd : Geocache mode. I have tried EVERY setting under the sun. It makes you walk miles down foot paths when you can walk 50 yards directly to it. I want the compass to show as the crow flies, it is set to shortest distance.. it makes me walk in a large circle to come back to where am standing... again any help?
  12. Had a couple of crashes when zooming on moving the map around. Had to literally take batteries out
  13. As the maunal, is utter garbage (non existant basically) I found by messing around there is an inbuilt profiler and one fo the profiles is for geochaching, this put the compass AND the map on screen together. I will go out and try this and let you know how i get on, thanks for all the advice so far.
  14. Thanks guys. Its the dam compass thats seems to do what it wants. Units screen goes off after 30 seconds.. then bam I'm walking in different direction. How can it be out by so much and yet my phone is steady as rock.. Shouldn't it be other way around?
  15. Thank you for your responses I will try the settings you recommend and update you tommorow. Very helpful.
  16. Tried an easy Geo today... but had utter utter frustration with the garmin 650 so much so not sure wether to take it back. Satellites said 4 meters.. Followed the route with the gps and it took me to quite close so i switched to the compass .. 38 meters north... (only 1 way point by the way) i get there it says 4 meters.. so i turn it off as it said 4 meters accuracy. I look around for 2 mins thinking theres nothing here.. switch it on.. points now 15 meters another direction.. i end up climbing over a wall in a cemetery.. (clue was memorial stone) i give up thinking this is is so inaccurate no way to pin point a memorial stone in here there are hundreds.. Climb back over... switch it back on.. now says 38 meters to the bottom of the park... i get there... 18 meters back where i came from.. Can anybody tell me what is going on here.. My galaxy s5 is spot on for location, yet a £300 quid gps system has no idea.. really don't understand it. Map is fuzzy as chuff when you zoom in (discoverer package was £200) I feel like i may have jumped in before i can swim. The joy so far of geo hunting has left me frustrated and fed up. Can anybody help me? tell me whats going on? is the gps set up wrong? i have a message when booting it up "Too many JNX files they will not be displayed" >> ? Satellite system is set to : GPS + GLONASS WAAS/EGNOS is = ON Position format = British Grid Map Datum = Ord Srvy GB Map Spheroid = Airy help

  18. Thank you that size guide you mentioned is very helpful. appreciated. Still don't understand how a galaxy s5 can be more accurate, faster and have better zoomed in detail that a dedicated garmin unit. Confused/ Even with the 50k maps worth £200 for the uk, zoom into and it looks terrible. Guess i was hoping for a cool sat nag with outdoor possibilities seems harder to navigate anything with the unit that a phone!
  19. ps. have looked EVERYWHERE how do i change distance to miles/??? its not listed in options under units
  20. Brilliant thank you all. Not knowing how small a 'small' geo is I suppose difficult or noobs. And not knowing what your looking for I guess comes with experience. I am told there is a setting on the Garmin to increase accuracy somewhat so I shall look into it. I was hoping as a new new new new hunter there would be a super tight close up of the find, a clue to get you going Thanks again all very appreciated.
  21. I just bought an Oregon 650 as I heard good things about it regards geochaching, just tried my first and .. no chance. Anyway. I have a few questions I was hoping some of you could help me with. How do I find beginner or easy Geos to find? as somebody new, trying to find a thimble in the woods is not easy, I need something the size of a fridge (joke) is there anyway to search for those type of things? aka New People Geo's. (Pudsey, Leeds area) for things that ease you in? Is there any way to make the Oregon more accurate? i was stood still at the location and it kept saying 10ft north, then 8 foot south etc.. I was stood still. There may be a option to increase this accuracy as i only had the unit a day and the manual is garbage. It also drew a pink line directly over houses and buildings, is there a way to make it follow achievable path when in cites? aka roads and turns? It did come with a Discovereer min sd card, the actual map looks garbage, thought it would be better than that. Any advice on the unit or help for a new Hunter, very appreciated. With thanks FireBoxRazor. Leeds.
