  10. _______________________________________________ Hello, Seeing as all Geocachers influence this number...I was wondering what is the rate of Cache-Creation versus the rate of Cache-Finding? I guess it would be the total on he Geocaching.com page divided by the TIME that Geocaching.com has been logging in Caches. Does anyone know that time? How would you calculate (or estimate all other finds?) I guess it would be an estimation of how many people are in each FIND-number category. (like bell curve pattern I expect). Someone once said to me that no one could ever read all the books (let alone other publications, written, internet...) that have been written in their own lifetime (let alone previous years before their birth)...because the rate of publication is higher than the possible rate of reading. If someone really likes numbers, they could find out the Geo-Cache density in certain areas...and GeoCache growth in certain areas. ...and the blackboard kept its secret... ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 11. _______________________________________________ Well I guess here are all the main terms so far which all mean the same thing: (Stealing, Ravaging, Destroying, Negligence...etc. of a Geocache) Plundering : The most official term GeoTrashing: The next most common-sense term Now does one of these imply more damage than the other? ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 12. _______________________________________________ WARNING: TANGENT (I think) I guess different media obey different laws and regulations when it has to do with how much control they have over the stories they receive...so is there a way to ensure what you say is indeed printed accurately? A contract? But, in the end, if that contract did work, it would be an ALL or NOTHING situation (with certain medias). I guess most people aren't interested in the truth, or are they? Perhaps certain truths, at certain times, but not all. There is much more than can be said on this (and that is useful), but will leave it at that for now. ...and the blinds were ripped open to reveal another set of blinds... ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 13. _______________________________________________ Does a box whose contents you can see stand a chance at a longer lifetime, against the onslaught of human curiosity and lack of self-control? 14. _______________________________________________ Hi, I really don't know, yet. I would speculate that would classify under mystery or puzzle type Geocaches, seeing as it is not hidden physically, but hidden cryptically. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 15. quote:Originally posted by Snoogans:http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/bigbang_alternative_010413-1.html _______________________________________________ That article was awesome ! What I found most encouraging (other than the theory), was the attitude of the theorists behind it: As a final remark, we feel that it is important to realize that Inflationary theory is based on Quantum Field theory, a well-established theoretical framework, and the model has been carefully studied and vetted for 20 years. Our proposal is based on unproven ideas in String theory and is brand new. While we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest with which the paper has been received, we would suggest some patience before promulgating these ideas in order to leave time for us to produce some follow-up papers that introduce additional elements and to allow fellow theorists time for criticism and sober judgment. How is that for responsible theorizing and publishing? NEW POINT: I am saying Einstein, was more than a scientist. I do drive, just no car. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. WARNING: TANGENT (not coming back full circle) Would it be inaccurate to say that those who say such things, aren't strictly scientists, and are those who have found some balance between idealism and realism. I know that in the past, mathematicians had trouble in working the inherent logical erros in their theories...and there was a lot of debate among them about which logic is best and which has the least inconsistencies...all while math was being used in practical ways, despite the theoretical inconsistencies. SO they continually changed their premises, and made new ones to account for the new uses of math. Eventually, I think, every science goes through this, only at different times. The reality is only discovered as you go along, and therefore, so must your interpretation of it. It is a cycle of discovery, theory, discovery, theory...but some people forget that most of the time, the theory must reflect the change in your discovery of reality. I have caught myself doing this only once , and never since (I hope!!). When I did, it didn't last long, because things didn't make sense any longer. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 17. ______________________________________________ Well that's a good idea!! I wonder if the downloadable letter (which I haven't read yet) that geocaching.com has provided (for those who are hiding caches), has anything in it similar to or useful for this idea? ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 18. _______________________________________________ Woodsters Outdoors observed: -Knife -Meat Cleaver -Saw There is also: -Poking stick down the middle SPECULATION: Some kind of tailor-made pin for some proud butcher (as Woodster said). Perhaps it is some pin that belongs to a butcher's cult or association, long ago. It also looks like a sailboat, kind of, perhaps the butcher also sails. Maybe the butcher did his thing on a fishing boat? Why the poking stick? Maybe the poking stick part is missing an end, like a Hammer or Sledge, or Pick-Axe...? Maybe the Butcher's first initial was "A" and butchered on a sailboat, all in one pin symbol. Butcher's guild? Maybe just symbolises a proud farmer-type person, who mastered all those different tools. It also looks like a lean-to tent...and there could also be more initials other than "A" in that bisected triangle. A secret weapon? Perhaps it has sharp edges so that it can be thrown. Thanks. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 19. _______________________________________________ Well, I do not know about your actual request. However, there is another option (you may already have considered)... No matter how long it takes, you can do a systematic search for the street and residence. Everytime you go out for a half-hour, say once every two days or whatever. Each time mark off where you've been on a map of the area. Eventually, you'll find it. (Given it wasn't moved out back or torn down) Thanks. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 20. _______________________________________________ And so I am guilty of repetition, but with a purpose !!...to find a resolution. (for those who are interested) Here goes... 1-Ultimately (in the strictest, most infinite sense), Geocaching, among all other human activities, will be overrun by other forces of the universe. POINT ORIGINALLY MADE BY: TEAM360, and supported by others. 2-Geocaching, has the potential to do noticeable harm in the short term (whether in your life, the life of a bug, animal, or tree, or ecosystem, and even in the life of others who come after you)more damage if it is not responsibly done. SHORT TERM MEANING: anything noticeable by the human race, or any other life near the human race, or any individual within those life forms). 3-THE ULTIMATE REALITY is not an excuse to IGNORE the SHORT TERM effects. POINT CARRIED ON BY MANY, MAINLY: Nincehelser. That is all. I do not see why there is an argument at all, after looking at these facts, which I (possibly inaccurately) interpreted from the entire thread. ...here's a toast to a lively bunch, and a lively topic ! Thanks. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 21. _______________________________________________ Hi Thanks for the clarification of the term. Now to make the relation, as you asked. THE RELATION between SPORT and the ORIGINAL THREAD is with the quote below. quote:Originally posted by jhwf4: First of all, I wonder why we like to term everything? This is like a while back when people were debating if geocaching was a sport, hobby, or a "rash". It's not that important, but if I had to pick, I'd say "plundering" To be unecessarily explicit (just for the heck of it): This term-based topic thread is specifically related to the definition of sports, because it reminded jhwf4 of a similarly term-based topic thread. Thanks. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 22. _______________________________________________ quote:I just thought of something curious. My detector was made by _GAR_rett and my GPSR is made by _GAR_min. I wonder what my hobby will be in my next life. I would ask you if it will be in you GARage?...or... One's GARbage is another's unGUARded gold? There are many words with GAR, but if one were to believe in predestiny, and depending on one's interpretation of it...the act of listing all such words or not, can either way potentially fight or feed the flow. ...oh in the end something is GUARranteed... ...afterall, puns are only so much fun... 23. _______________________________________________ quote: Maybe for people like me who like to post and talk a lot, we could have an icon of a mouth and put a tooth in it for every 100 posts...Would only take 3200 posts to get a mouthful Now for a little more speculation... Until the site programmers do make that happen (if they do)...those who are interested in keeping track and showing off ( , can use the SMILEY FACES (Graemlins) in order to represent the 100 or 200 or 500 or 1000 marks. It is just a matter of figuring out which ones to use. Perhaps it would be quicker for the programmers to add symbols the SMILEY collection. If the smiley thing doesn't work, then... A different way may be someone finds the proper symbol on the net somewhere, and then shares it with everybody who is interested. NOTE: Though I'm a newbie, believe me, I am not trying to change the system... I guess some people like statistics, and others don't, and it would be nice if the option was there for both. ...and a cheer to repetition for without it we'd forget all whole lot of good and a whole lot of nonsense... Thanks. ________________________________________________________ Kanto Temple Kung Fu "If you know about truth, tell me of it. 24. _______________________________________________ Hi, Seeing as this is the second time this question is asked...might as well. quote:Originally posted by jhwf4:First of all, I wonder why we like to term everything? This is like a while back when people were debating if geocaching was a sport, hobby, or a "rash". It's not that important, but if I had to pick, I'd say "plundering" Here are some possible reasons why humans name everything: 1-To symbolically represent the distinctions between things that are real. (types of symbols are: language (written, spoken), visual (sign language, arts), audio (music, sounds), ...etc) WHY: So we can distinguish between things when we communicate. MAIN PROBLEM: Symbols can both hinder and help in communication (depending on thow they are used and in what context and with what tone). TREND: Some terms stick, others don't. FACTS: People have different ways of seeing things...and have different ways of naming them, given the opportunity. People use different words to express same idea, object, or whatever. Well I stop here. Maybe there are other reasons, like people just like making up words, or some people hate new words. (??) __________________ PART 2: What is a sport? I think an activity, like Geocaching, is made into a sport by certain groups of people. Any activity, can become a sport. Last discuss on this, we agreed that this happens when a combination of the following is added to the activity: 1-Competition 2-Reward (in any form, money, prize, pure win) 3-Teams 4-Organised League 5-I forgot the rest...the other possibilities.. CONCLUSION: Sometimes we name too much, when the term already exists. Language is in constant change. A sport is an activity with competition and high stakes on the line, like a nation's pride or a school's pride or reputation...worldwide champions...among other things. For some, Geochachin is a sport, for others it is something else, and for others still it is both. Wait, one more reason why humans like to name things...is the same reason why some people turn to religion: To put a name on something we do not understand. With a name, you can place it in a context (name a context), and then furthermore put a name on the unknown, for some us do fear the unknown, the unfamiliar. Perhaps each reason for naming things, depends on the situation, and in some cases, it is a combination of reasons.
