  1. I have seen some bunch of caches hides that the first to finds were for kids only.... They want the game to go on and what better way then to encourage kids..... Fair game only after a child logged it ...all other would be deleted until such time.
  2. I had a cobra 500 a while back... liked it found it worked well only got rid of it due that It wasn't paperless and had to enter the cords vs. download.... back to your question I know that if you contect cobra they will send you the files for insturctions and they also have updates for them. As some of the things on mine didn't work unless you have the updates of what buttons to press. Also if you search the form there were posts for them. They are powerful machines but had to stop making them due to copy right problems. I foind that it was right i line with the Garmins finding Ground zero. Sorry I can't tell you push this or that... just remeber you can't break it by pushing buttons and some things were two buttons at once on my 500. Have fun with it.
  3. we have used sets of these poles for years due to injury and surgeries. They are wonderful it is like having 4 wheel drive when walking/hiking and in fact influence many friends to also buy them. You might want to check big box stores for them as we bought extra set as we were on a trip and really wanted to hit the trail in the quest of caches and couldn't believe how nice and cheap they were compaired to our first sets. These are great for slippy slopes and takes away alot of the worry of falling even for those with good "wheels".
  4. I am a premium member, and I do get notifications of new caches, and I do create PQ's. All of that is beside the point. I was just trying to get this specific problem fixed. Does the link on your profile page show "newest in United States" or "newest in [your state]? Anyone have a solution to this specific problem??? If you go into your profile and put in your adrsss then the newest in your state shows up on the right side of your account page now if you change your home cords then it changes just that which is right above newest in .....nearest from home and also at on the cache page it shows how far you are from ground zero. Also I have found just changing the second one chages what state infomation you get from the weekly email from geocaching. When I travel I change the second one as I find it easier to decide where to go from that. You also can see the news caches in each state in the forms ,,,closer to the bottom..
  5. I have found a few caches that ask just to take for trade dvd's, paperback and kids books, foreign money and CDs. But these type of caches are a bit rare but it sounds to me you just need an ammo can as you have a great collection of stuff to get something new started. Other wise most caches are just fun things for all age kids. My husband has quite a collection on his desk of little trinkets, cool rocks, shells and the other managers love to see what he found this week. He gets so many and trades they back in. We have also gone to leaving foreign coins we have gotten by the pound off of ebay. I don't think they are worth much but they are interesting to look up. Plus with the coins put into a plastic bag I'm always ready to add in the log to keep it safe. Also thinking of making some type of bottle cap swag item as some people are really into collecting these.
  6. I keep a quart size zipplock to put my nuvi in when it rains and have found the 4-5 hour battery life perfect for most of my caching days. I do think a compass helps as at times I'm directional challenged. I figure I will keep using it until it dies .. my husband has a new PN-40 which is sweet but I'm not ready to give up my nuvi. It has gotten me to alot of caches.
  7. I have only cached in a few states but now having spent a bit of time here in Tx I would say they do everythring BIG here. There are so many big series every where here I can see how the numbers add up fast. It is nothing to find a road with 20 caches on it..... then find one with a hundred. This is the place to vaction cache... but remeber that they have huge poision ivy tree, snakes, ants, spiders and plants that bit. Plus it gets hot and humid at times. So I would do a bit of planning but is well worth it lots of history and pretty places. I don't know if there are any other states that do this on such a big scale? That would be an interesting topic. Personally every cache is a happy dance and haven't done to many of the big ones here not sure we will before we leave, which is ok as there will be another cache on down the road, calling to us.
  8. Go to here he has done alot of great stuff with it and gives easy step by step directions http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com Garmin needs to hire him....

  10. We are using foreign coins we bought by the pound off ebay. we put them in little plastic bags that I was always pulling out any way to put logs in. The coins come in such a big variety of sizes they almost fit everywhere. Decided to do this was we saw some posts where people always pick them up out of caches, Don't think any of the coins have great vaule but they seem treasure like and are intersting to look up where they came from. Still have a few larger things for ammo boxes like dog toys, wind up toys and wine openers. I love leaving surprises and some times the boxes need a bit of restocking and tidding up. Told my husband to just call me the cache faire.
  11. It is very do able for caching and look in the forms for the posts on the nuvis micro as it tells how to make it paperless. It's amazing stuff they have done and it works great... they should work for garmin I have used mine for 4-5 hours straight caching, used a plastic zipplock for when it rains and find the readings exactly the same as my husbands brand new Pn40. It is more durable then you think as I have thrown it when opening a caching that lauches bugs at you that made my big husband scream like a girl. I do miss the compass of my old one but I do fine with this as long as I know which way is north all is good..(a cheap clip on compass is on my shopping list) I will not be taking it on long cache hikes that are off the trail in the desert as my husbands will mark the trail back out, lots of different maps and has a great compass. But have found the first 125 caches with my nuvi and find it a great help while traveling with the travel guide on. With the memory chip have load 3 states worth of cahes with room to spare. Plus in urban areas I just act like I'm taking pictures when mugglers are around. Happy caching.....

    SWAG ?

We love all see the swag it is such a surprise to see what people leave. The house policy for every thing is something "new" in two or more things out. So we leave much more than we take and have gotten pounds of foreign coins which we put in little ziplocks and leave. In part because I was always getting the bags out to put logs in so why not add some thing with it. I also have a great big box of garage sale windup toys and dog toys to add to those big caches. My husband loves to says how much money he would have had if he had taken all the money out of the caches we found. The big thing he brings back are rocks, shell and nature that are just lying around and puts them on his desk at work, or in the yard. People love to see what he has found and laugh about caching stories. Junk or treause it is all in the eye of the holder... Have fun with it let the kid in you shine......
  13. If you don't want to throw the pill bottles out we give my husbands to the homeless shelter as they dispence everything in them toothpaste to matches. Also some churches collect them for missions to use for meds.
  14. If you are in the area of Belton TX heading north off of I-35 and at GC1DZNM there is a TB Blue Bear #1 which is racing to finish it's race to GC108Pw to Terrell TX which is East of Dallas off I-20. We picked this TB up in Benson Az but don't have time to take it to the finish. Thank you the bears travel agent.
  15. My husbands PN-40 his only Cristmass present came yesterday. Of course I let him open it I was singing carols. the main reason is He has to figure it out so we can go out hunting/hiking on Christmas day... I can wait it is like Chirstmas keeps coming...... What would a holiday be with out a cache or two or three...
  16. We live in Joliet Il and my husband has been working on and off in Temple tx for a few years now. So my first thought on your route and the time of year it is we would try to get as far south as fast as we can. As I'm sure you are use to lots of white stuff and glassey roads not all the drivers are ready as you head south. (Rt. 57 would be our pick to 55 to 40 plus you miss st. louis... As for traveling and caching on a tight schedule drives us both crazy. But love Travel bug hotels at rest areas, and look for ones around the hotel as who want to spend the night sitting around after driving. We take a good flash light. There are alot of good caches in central texas they have a very active group on Yahoo., I think it is central texas geocaching. I have cached mostly in the temple area but looks like a lot of good caches with history all around the area. Have fun in Texas and have some great BBQ and ice tea.

    garmin nuvi

I have good luck using the nuvi as long as I now where north is and use the satliete screen . Guess I need to get a compas. Love the paperless and tour guide part when traveling on long trips. Have dropped it a couple of times... big husband screaming like a girl when out of the cache sprang a big big spider. It was fake..... Not sure it is going to work for the mountian /hiking caches here in the west.
  18. My son and daughter-in-law told me about it from a friend , ten months ago. They have yet to cache but me, a bunch of my friends and hundreds of dollars ok if we add it all up- thousands of dollars later we are hooked. Oh the fun of it and we have only been hunting sence March. Thank you everyone for making this such an interesting adventure. The hunt is always on.
  19. I now paperless cache all the time with my nuvi as it simplified life. i use to use a palm and handheld that I gave away. To make it more durable and waterproof ; a quart size freezer bag and a cut down to size clip board with binner clips oh and i forgot a nursing pen.( One on a heavier rope). the nuvi works great on the board in the bag and it is great to have a pen at hand, plus you don't have to put it down you can just hand it around your neck. Plus it is good cover in urban settings. Now for the great paper less part go down to through the list here to Gps tech listings and look for the paperless caching with the nuvi. or to http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/index.html for an greatest instuctions on how to set it up. It even worked for silly me. Happy caching Just wondering, unless you are just doing park n grabs, how do you deal with only 4 hours of battery life when out for a day of caching? the first thing I did was adjust the screen brightness way down and I just plug it in bettween locations, I use either the car adaptor or I have a regular plug in one. I do turn it off in larger park area's after getting the last cache to let it rest. Also if it says it is 1 mile down the trail then 50 feet to the side ,once I'm on the trail I have been know to turn it off and then note the time/hiking speed.
  20. Just got a neat little camera for caching as I hated to take the our good camera out on hikes . I bought a Argus Bean Sprout at walgreens for $ 14.99 It is the kids version of the Bean. I like it alot so far it does a good job with web pictures and daylight shooting( has a flash to boost light but.not for dark) It seems rugged with it's rubberized design and carbiarter clip. It isnt water proof but resitant. Rehargable battery 4 to 5 hour life, sleep mode, 26 pictures, timer and other little crazy settings. Plus it is so small . I'm only a day time cacher as they have snakes that bite here in tx and I want to see where I'm stepping.

  22. I'm so happy with this that I gave my handheld away. I use a clipboard cut down to fit the nuvi and then binder clips and a quart size zipper bag plus a pen on a rope. It is now water protected, crash resilent and has a neck strap/write insturment at my finger tips. Thank oh so much for all the hard work that went into this it is wonderful and so easy for a noncomputer person to set up.
