  1. Here in Chicago area, there are lots of LPCs; mostly lame, on private property and devoid of any special thought other than the CO wanted to place one. What's so special about a string of Targets, Home Depots, etc? Nope, these almost immediately get 'ignored' by me so I don't have to look at them or take up space on my weekly query. Originally, it was sort of cool, but now, like a previous poster here pointed out, they breed like rabbits and now, it's not special anymore. No, I head for the forest preserves, trails, to really enjoy caching in my own way.
  2. Thanks matejcik for the explanation. I'm not sure I fully understand the formatting issue, as I checked the files on my SD card and the file extension is GWS, not OWS. I'll try the Pocket PC version and see how that runs. Thanks and sorry for the trouble.

  4. Hi all! I have my a functioning WhereYouGo installed on my LG Ally phone. Seems to work great, however I have a few questions: 1. When downloading the cartridge from WGO website, which version are you supposed to download? Garmins or PocketPC? I've taken the first choice Garmin and it functions well, but, 2. When I go to upload the completed GWS file to WGO, it fails. Has anyone had the same issue? 3. I did get a response from Menion and he promptly replied that it's a "system" compatibility issue and I'd have to log the finds w/o uploading. Since there's a growing component of cachers out there using the Android system, I find it hard to believe that it's just my phone. I didn't see any previous threads regarding this issue. Any ideas? Thanks.
  5. Solution: Use GSAK and export to HTML. Then use the built in web browser on the MOTO Q. Pretty easy.
  6. [copied from Geocaching Topics forum] Hi GC folks, I just bought my MOTO Q with WMv5. I have ActiveSync installed and it connects with my MOTO Q just fine. I can't seem to get the programs to install; apparently due to that these programs are not compatable with my phone's OS. I've read on forums that they do work. I tried CacheMate; it actually went through an install process, but then "died" with some compatibility issue. I repeated the install and it gave me a different error message. I'd rather use Sonar, but I'll take suggestions on a viewer that doesn't hog resources on my phone. Thanks. ssphoto (Steve)

  8. Hi all, Some cell phones have Windows operating systems it appears, but I don't know if any of the tried and true GPX viewers will work on them. The GPXSonar and/or GPXView s/w will work on PocketPC OS's; but will they function on any of the new phones on the market. For me to buy a new phone, even with internet, I'd rather just load a GPX file -- faster and cheaper! Thanks for any help. Steve (ssphoto)
  9. Thanks CYBret, for the clarification. Looks like I'm going out to buy a digital voice recorder!
  10. Huh?? I thought there is a container (the one I listened to). I have only seen one or two on their website that has a Geocaching ID on them. The others may be virtual. Am i missing something here?
  11. You've probably already heard of Podcaching. It's a neat idea. I love variety. Visit: Podcaching I've set up my IPodder to pull down their weekly shows and enjoy them. I've also listened to one of their Podcaches; it seems like a neat idea. I was also thinking about doing my own in the IL area. I wasn't sure about "stealing" Itrax and Foxtail's idea, so I am currently waiting to see if they intended this to take off in other states. What say you all to this; what's your opinion of Podcaching? Has anyone out there done one. Opinions?? Buehller??
  12. I have the 60CS and it rocks! I primarily use it for Geocaching, but also for general road navigation. 1. The magnetic compass in the CS version is a real plus; this way, you don't have to be moving to register a bearing on the compass. 2. It also facilitates the geocaching process, where you can search Geocaching waypoints, not all waypoints, by name, nearest, etc. When you find the cache, you can hit "found" and it logs the find in your calendar. After a long days caching, it's convenient not to have to remember all the points you visited. 3. Regarding memory, unless you are a heavy traveller, I don't see the need for different memory cards like the Magellan has. I simply load the other maps; it takes onl y a few minutes. Hope this helps.
  13. Hi all, I just picked up a Compaq 3955 with PocketPC 2003. I used the .exe file from the GpxSonar download and ran it from my desktop computer. The install appeared to go fine, however I get the same message " Cannot find "GPXSonar" (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and all the required libraries are available." I uninstalled it and reinstalled twice to no avail. It there a trick I'm missing? Thanks for any help. ssphoto
  14. Hi all, I am frequently wishing I had a device that I can drop my Pocket Queries into for viewing cache pages. I don't need many bells and whistles, just a good, solid, AND inexpensive model for viewing; I probably won't be doing any live connection to the internet. I thought using GSAK would be the ticket, but didn't do the research and rarely use it, as it doesn't work on PPC or like software and I can't take it with me in the field. Current gear: Garmin 60CS Any recommendations in the $300 or less bracket? Thanks!
  15. I have to agree with xafwodahs. If one takes a look at his one cache, and has logged it, you'll find the time REALLY worth spending, as it not only is just another find, but takes you to an interesting spot WITH HISTORY worked in. Xafwodahs and I did go to Maine a couple weeks ago and found many locations that were not "just another find's", but were accented by crashed aircraft remains, old rail trestles, ravines, rock cliffs. I know that NE IL is developed beyond all hope and finding these types of places is dwindling, but COME ON folks! Put just a tad more thought into it. On my own caches placed; one is the typical "out in the woods" type, and the other brings you to a small natural wonder. I exercised a bit more thought than just finding a gap in cache placements in my area. I also welcome more Virtuals, but ILAdmin has clamped down on those. There are plenty of interesting places to see that putting a container wouldn't be appropriate. I still haven't forgotten the main idea of geocaching, so I won't belabor this point. Just my two cents, for all they're worth.
  16. Bought this and didn't fancy attaching it to my dash - doh! Unit comes with one "permanent" mount pad to adhere to dash surface. $10. S&H is $3. Total $13.
  17. I've upgraded! Now I need to help pay for my new unit. This Etrex is two years old and works perfectly. It has a good part of the Chicagoland and southern Wisconsin maps loaded, but with the Mapsource and Metroguide s/w, you can load any US map you need. One small abrasion on the face, but doesn't cause any viewing hinderance. The rubber siding is a little loose, but is still firm enough not to sag. A great unit for a beginning Geocacher who doesn't want to settle for a basic unit. Battery life is excellent with this unit. Included are: 1. Etrex Vista unit with loaded maps (see above) 2. Serial cable (for hookup to your computer 3. MapSource Metroguide USA v.5 software 4. Cigarette power cable Asking $150. A new Etrex averages $250 new and the software averages $75. The power cable is typcally $20 new. Shipping will vary depending on where you live. Questions, or if you'd like a picture of all the items, email me direct via my ssphoto profile.
