  1. Hi all,

Just to ensure that you are still ariving at JHB international on Friday, 12 Aug. I will be at the airport between 17:00 and 18:00. I have two of my own TBs and see that the parcel from Rathlan (according to the trace no) is now awaiting me at the post office. I will collect it this evening, so there is another TB. Will see what other African goodies I have to send along.

    Regards Petrus (Team Warthog)

  2. Eish!!!

To just put this in a different light, this cacher has been active for 1535 days (since 26 May 2001) and the average no of cahces per day EVERY day, until now is a just over 7 a day.

I think, we are lucky if we average 7 per week or even 7 per month.

It just means we have to hide more to find more. I will be hiding a few tomorrow, just to get our stats up again!!!

  3. as for...TB Ticky - The First Aid in Stoddard's Demise...best you detectives get cracking. I'll move the TB on in a few weeks if no-one cracks the case

I have already enlisted the CIA on this one and hopefully we will be able to crack this one in the next week or so.

I just hope it does not have to go to the extreme where the CIA will have to resort to torturing methods on "Brick", as he has been the only one to find the cache so far.

  4. An update before the weekend, just in case this may help in planning your caching weekend...

Further than this, I am not going to report, as none of the others collected from a cache more than a year ago has changed in any way.

  5. Will check with Post Office using tracking number.

Once a person has the travel bug, they can do a "grab" using the tracking number on the dog tag. That wayy the other person willl take it from you.

Will post a note here once I received the parcel.

  6. I have just done a check on the original cache co-ords and the current cache co-ords for the cache (Johannesburg South 1B) for which I logged a second find.

The current cache is within the minimum 400 metre range for a new cache and thus the cache would not have been accepted as a new cache. I should have checked this before I actually made my second log and will now revert it from a find to just a note.

It was however nice to see where the new cache is.

  7. This is now a co-incidence.

Without even knowing about such an idea, I have already done this and dropped one off in (I think) the "Fern Fountain" cache in the Rietvlei NR near Pretoria.

I collect about 30 35mm cannisters and created a small label that I can glue onto the cannister. Anyone interest just email me and I will forward you a copy of the label, which you can then change as you like.

The label is glued on and then coverred (don't tell my wife) using decoupage varnish, which will ensure it lasting a bit longer.

  8. Thus,

According to the rules, I will be fishing (I mean waiting) for a "Shark" and maybe I can entice it to take the bait. In the meantime I will walking up and down in my cage like a wounded "Lion". (I'll just have to go caching somewhere else)

  9. I just had a thought last night (yeah I know, it doesn't happen often, even my wife says so)

but, can one use your "copy" travel bug dog tag or create another dog tag from it, in order to resurrect or recreate your travel bug, as all that the other person require to log the travel bug is the 6 digit on the tag and this does appear on the copy tag.

I am thinking here more towards assiting the current 2005 travel bug race and how to get the "missing" bugs in action again, but also to reinstate my missing travel bug.

From a distance travelled and number of cahces visited but such travel bugs, that the race organiser must decide or should missing/lost travel bugs in races not be allowed to be resurrected?

  10. Hi all fellows,

I know this has nothing to do with Geocaching, but I would like to compile a full list of the Toll Plaza GPS co-ords in South Africa and would like those of you who have any of these to please publish them here. I will then create a full combined list and publish the file here for anyone to download.

    My Toll Plaza points.

    Verkeerdevlei, Free State: S 28 47.932 E 26 41.433

  11. Starlight has now visited two more caches. How about an update on the rankings?

and maybe now the GP cachers will move Starlight around in lots of the caches in Gauteng, before he departs to WC, so that we get his rankings up a bit.

Maybe we can try and beat the KZN and WC team in this sport, as it doesn't seem if we are any good at beating them in that "other sport" :-)

  12. Haven't posted any pictures yet, as none of mine are close to any of these ones, but we will hopefully in the near future submit a few.

However, I don't know if it is just me that is very close to Arica and see Africa in every thing, but with a bit of creativity one can see the outline of the African continent in the I&Js first photo of Dumbe Mountain, by only looking at the lighter areas in the photo.

    or am I losing it?

  13. I have now received my SA Geocoins and they look great. Thanks to Geocacher!!!

Before I let them out into the wild, I would just like to know if they are trackable right now and if so where do we activate and track them through.

If not, any suggestions out there?

  14. A bit shoit notice, but if you can give exact arrival times in South Africa (assuming Jhb international) then we can see if it would be possible to do a swop.

I may even have one of the new SA Geocoins available for swopping by then.

  15. I also agree with the statements made by the previous two cachers, about "its the hunt...", but I think just dumping items in a cache to get rid of it, i.e. bottle caps, tooth picks, etc. can turn a cache into a trash very quickly.

I will not take a tooth pick just lieing open in the cache, I don't know where that tooth pick was last.

A cacher can also, by using a bit of creativeness stock a cache very nicely for less than R 20. I have managed to do that previously, so one do not need to try and out do the Jones in this sport. (Just think of what golf costs its players, and they keep walking and finding the same places all the time!!!) B)

In the case where a cacher takes newbies and/or children cache hunting, I think cachers (myself included) may need to just check what the cache content could be (work out from prevoous logs what was left / taken), to ensure that the hunt is enjoyed by all and not create an anticipation of finding "great treasures" and then being disappointed when finding the cache.

Need to work through the logs again, because...

Now in which cache did that cacher left the two rugby test tickets again???

  16. Just to add my two cents (and maybe a bit more in the cache itself) B)

I went past the local "Amazing/Chepy" shop last night and for just over R 100, bought enough items to fill al least two 2 litre cache containers. This covered toys for boys and girls as well as items for adults both men and ladies.

It is also a great place to take a walk through if you are out of ideas of what to put in a cache.

  17. Hi there,

I have made a note in my diary for visiting the airport on 12 August. I will drop in after work, between 16:30 and 17:00 to exchange the items.

To Azaruk and others who would like me to take items along, but is unable to drop off in the Jhb area, my postal address is:

    PB Keyter

    PO Box 146216

    Bracken Gardens

    Alberton

    1452

Please, post a note here of what and when items were posted, so that I may check postbox regularly.

 Any gifts, cheques, cash, etc. for my personal use may also be mailed to this address B)

  18. I know that "a lot of the Geocaching is in the hunt and not the treaure you take with you", but...

After visiting the caches in Bloemfontein over the weekend (and this post is NOT only aimed at the Bloemfontein caches, but to all caches), and taking newbies with nogal, I must say that the quality (and quantity) of items in the two caches we visited are very poor.

I know, I also sometimes just add something small, but to pitch up at a cache that you drove nearly 400 kms to go and visit only to find a few marbles, a few stickers and obvisouly items no one else wants, was really sad.

From my side, "I commit that from now on the start contents' value of my cache will not be less than R100.00, with at least one or two items of some value (R25.00 to R50.00).

I also challenge all other cachers out there to do the same, as well as to revisit some of the existing caches and to restock them. I will also be revisiting my caches over the next month or so, to ensure that those not "up to scratch" are upgraded.

From now on, I would rather place only one cache a month (or every second month), which contains ten or more quality items, than place ten caches, which contains only a few items, or "crappy" items.

  19. Hi there,

I see you have not had any replies yet. I will prepare a Travel bug, that I will drop off with you on 15 August. Maybe I can make time to set up a cache parcel with South African items that you can take along and place somewhere in USA when you are back there.
