  1. What a neat idea, glenn. You can adjust for the one state at a time rule a bit by moving the starting point eastward a state or few if necessary, but on the other hand there are hops that don't even cross state lines. Or, you could have teams North and South instead. New England still has tiny states, but if you're heading to Maine the lengths of PA, NY, MA and ME are reasonable. Not that this should prevent another NY-anchored race either.
  2. We happened across http://www.bantha.org/~padme/pics/Geocaching-2003-04-06-012.jpg in Portsmouth, NH today (well, yesterday) between some genuine benchmarks. Anyone know more about it? I suppose it was placed by the folks at http://www.wright-pierce.com/ -- so I guess it's one of many varieties of private marker?
  3. Well, if you mean 51 degrees, 30 minutes (or something), then it's between 0 and 90 north and 0 and 180 west, so yeah, it exists. For more of a clue where, check out Aberdeen, London, and other British cities at http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0001769.html
  4. I see what you mean. I intend to list as destroyed another church spire that may or may not be the original one: it doesn't have the surrounding shorter spires described in the NGS report. But in this case there is enormous photographic and other evidence that the thing (the roof of the tower, which is the station) is exactly how it used to be, which is why I figured it was a possible find.
  5. Okay, then, found it is, for these purposes. Is this the sort of thing to make an official report about? I confess I already did, but if it's a bad idea I'll be more conservative in future.
  6. Check the benchmarks that I listed yesterday. They're all part of Harvard or located next to dorms, all somewhat south of this one. You'll get right down to the river.
  7. What, if anything, should I do with this one? It's an urban tower and was certainly never lost. ;-) Pretty full details are in my note on the page. The tower was burned down and reconstructed decades later. Harvard being Harvard, they were quite careful with the reconstruction, and the roof (the center of which is the station) would appear to be in exactly the same position as before. But because they reconstructed the tower to an earlier form than the one seen in the 30's, the tower matches the description pretty incompletely.
