  1. Why this one? That can be quite common on caches that are in perfect condition around here. I think that means the cache has been devalued through people trading junk for anything remotely related to an item of value. Personally, I've given up restocking my caches. I just clean out the absolute garbage, and maybe put a couple of things in if there is nothing left after cleaning.
  2. I'll agree with the comment about the 1/4" size taking some effort to get a good impression. Go bigger if you can!
  3. I wouldn't start my own site, but i'd surely participate, but only in full camo dress, painted face, and with lots of crazy, animated handsignals, even when caching alone. That way, I might not get convicted on the grounds that I might be found insane. "Look, there goes 'ol Crazy Dave looking for rogue caches...." "Yeah, but he's not hurting anyone, just leave him alone...."
  4. I'm headed down to Las Vegas from the Salt Lake City area, and I'm just letting the Travel Bugs in the area know that they can hitch a ride with me if they want. Just have the cacher that has you email me thru the site to work out the details!
  5. I wish they still sold it at that price.....
  6. the first cache I placed was recently plundered and stolen, and, I'm not as heartbroken as I thought I'd be. It was in a local park, and I'm actually surprised it made it as long as it did. I kinda miss the little fella though..... [sigh]
  7. I couldn't agree more, or improve on what you said.
  8. What JMBella is trying to say is that this idea has been brought up before, but it's not going to happen. Apparently there is a spot for off-topic posts, and it's called "the rest of the internet".
  9. CR, I hope this doesn't affect the order I just placed from you...
  10. I agree. On a related note, I have a cache that I placed a little while back. Due to problems with it taking on water, I had to replace the container (a prescription pill bottle) with a larger one (Small rubbermaid - I know, I feel dirty for using rubbermaid). With the hiding space not being very large, I asked those that found it to hide it as well or better than they found it. One local (prominent) cacher posted this note when logging: "Hmmmm. Was tempted to hide this better than I found it, as you suggested, by placing it in a new spot in the nice field to the south, but figured that's not what you meant." I guess I shouldn't let this comment bug me, but it does. To bring this back full circle, and agree with the thread, Hide the cache as it was meant to be hidden, where it was meant to be hidden, and keep your rude comments to yourself. So what if you have ideas on what or how the cache should be hidden, it's not your place to decide.
  11. the only flaw with your plan is that your starting coordinates would have to be "spot-on" perfect, or you can't accurately predict the distance you are away from the coordinates you give.
  12. Well, here's one that may qualify. The land manager builds a straw man (geocachers are likely to go off trail) and then uses it as justification to oppose geocaching in that area. They even posted a photo of a boot-trampled flower with a caption reading "OUCH" for effect. Certainly not good science, but it's a sad fact that it's not an isolated perception. It only took me about 5 minutes using Google to find this one. Chances are there are others. I think it's also worth noting at least one "environmentalist" organization (the Sierra Club) appears to have accepted and even promoted geocaching. See this web page. In reading that linked website some more during my lunch hour, I was struck by the contrast between the land manager's treatment of geocachers and rock climbers. (And I am not bashing rock climbers, I've enjoyed that activity in the past.) The rock climbing page explains that new permanent anchors are not allowed, but they decided to compromise and allow all the anchors on existing popular climbing routes to remain in place. Marking with chalk on boulders is O.K., but please try to use tasteful colored chalk. And getting to the climbing areas? Well, using a social trail or going off-trail seems to be OK... just try not to trample anything and don't prune anything back to make the climbing easier. The trampled flower picture is recycled on that page. Oh, and they say they will build some new trails to get to the climbing spots that currently can't be reached by an official trail Should I wait for an update when they decide to build trails for use by geocachers? I agree with your observations. It also appears that if the author could find a way to build a wall around their park without harming any flowers in the process, they would. I think they want us to view nature from our rear ends through an internet site, and the truth is, they are out of a job if everyone does that. I don't seem the harm in hiking through a national forest, and enjoying nature. If a flower is trampled in the process, in the whole scheme of things, I doubt it's the last one, and it's not like they will all be trampled in a given period of time. Nature is a lot more resilliant than we give it credit for. I'm not going to intentionally trample anything, but I'm also not going to give up my right and freedom to enjoy these things for the sake of a jumping mouse or flower either.
  13. Be sure to take your own bug to Costa Rica with you, so it can rack up some international mileage!
  14. lol, I got a Springfield Armory XD40, but I thought I'd be flamed for bringing it up.
  15. I've thought about doing something similar, and spent a couple visits to Home Depot/Lowes in the plumbing section, but never tried it yet. Be sure to let us know how it works out.
  16. Teflon tape will be rendered useless after opening it up once or twice. You'd have to leave a couple rolls in the container, along with instructions, as I'm sure there's someone out there that couldn't figure out teflon tape.
  17. You should post the stats of the person who contacted you in this rude manner. Let's see what we can nit-pick about them!
  18. If you want the other cacher to not log any caches 1st just so others can, then does not that ruin the thrill of being FTF? You're only FTF because that other guy laid low on purpose. I don't get it. My Sentiments exactly. Why not just leave them all out in the open to make it easier for the newer participants to find? Why hike up a mountain to hide them, when you can just leave them at the trailhead? FTF is a challenge inside of the game, but it's not the game itself. You also have to remember, some of the cachers that you are talking about might have found all the caches in their area, and when a new one pops up, it might be the only one they have yet to find. Why deny them the opportunity to enjoy geocaching? Should they supress their enjoyment for 2 days until someone else finds it?
  19. You could use a Decon container, and they come with their own clip for use in hanging.
  20. WOW, the lengths some people will go to in order to save a buck on shipping.... Just kidding, good luck!
  21. It's your bug, you can do what you want with it. Go for it! If someone has a problem with it, well, they had ample opportunity to pick it up themselves, right?
  22. Unfortunately, you are fighting a losing battle, my friend. The game is played on the honor system, and there's not a lot you and I can do about people trading their junk in for something slightly more useful. The sad thing is, they trade their junk in for something that can almost always be found in any dollar store. I was a lot more disappointed when I first discovered boxes-'o-junk, but, over time, I really have found that I don't go in expecting much, and I can be pleasantly surprised when the cache isn't de-valued by unfair trading. I've also given up on restocking my caches for the same reason. I try to clean out the stuff that is TOTALLY garbage, but I don't add a whole lot anymore. Just my opinion...
  23. The reason every article uses the phrase "High Tech Treasure Hunt" is that the phrase is found on the GC.com homepage. Judging by several of the articles I've read, they didn't get much further than that in their research.... "I'm 35 Years old, I am divorced, and I live in van down by the river!" - Matt Foley
