  1. Did you even look at the list of bookmarks on that very cache? If you did you would have found this bookmark list. Of course I looked at the Bookmarks on that very cache but if you actually looked at that Bookmark list it doesn't contain many Virtuals and most of the caches in the list aren't actually in the airports...they are near the airports listed. I was hoping for a Bookmark list of caches IN airports. The only ones I personally know of are the ones in Chicago and Atlanta airports.
  2. Recently did a Virtual in Chicago's Ohare Airport (GC5165) ORD Layover. I was wondering if anyone knew of a bookmark list of other airports with Virtuals in them?
  3. For anyone else with this question....the activation code for all of the trackable GW9 shirts is GEOGEAR.
  4. Why wouldn't you use the Explorist XL for Geocaching as well as for the Direct Route navigation? The XL has a great Geocaching management system built in and is very accurate for caching. The only issue I have with the XL so far compared to the Meridian Gold I was using is that I can't seem to find how to do a projected waypoint on the XL while this is a simple command on the Meridian series. Otherwise, being able to store tons of seperate pocket queries with cache details of each cache including hints on it is great.
  5. I'm a NYGO member....one of the original......and am still pretty dissapointed at the lack of interest in representing the State's Capital on a state coin!!! Albany does have a great recognizable skyline with it's large tower, 4 smaller towers and the "Egg". We use it in our Capital Region Geocacher logo. Looks like this: If the skyline portion could be used without the little yellow cacher dude in front of it, it would represent Albany nicely. I do like the "X" version better but a scenic image can be nicely done like the backside of the GeoWoodstock III coin. If the option of having a coin for each region in NYGO is possible then I'd vote for that option. I'd get a couple of each region! NYGO currently has 8 regions defined on the site but a couple of those really could be combined. If that can't be done reasonably then the single coin with the X design would be my next choice. I had no idea what the lighthouse represented until expained but if it's important to the LI folks then that's fine. Either the Statue of Liberty OR the Empire State Building would be good for NYC. The Falls is great for the western part of the state and I don't think anyone could argue about the tree covered mountains for the Adirondacks. The fingerlakes are just a tough area to represent. Not sure about that but the squiggle lines wouldn't be my first choice. If any designs suggested could be run through a program like Photoshop or PaintshopPro where you can make lineart out of any picture or image, it would really help to see what the various designs would look like in reality on the coin.
  6. Would anyone happen to have any detailed street or topo maps of Saudi for a Magellan unit? The Magellan Mapsend World BaseMap is very vague and almost useless. I've just recently arrived in Saudi and will be here for the next year or so and would really appreciate any help I could get with a digital map for my GPS. Thanks!
  7. Most of my cache hunts have been fairly free of such encounters ....mostly due to active stealth but there was a funny encounter I had a while back while hunting a couple BM's in a park. The Benchmark coords were off quite a bit for one of them so I was walking around this park in all directions with the GPSr in hand and camera around my neck not really trying to be stealthy like I am when huntng caches....when I notice a couple slightly nosey old women following me around trying to see what I was up to. This got to be funny after like another 15 mins of walking around the park with GPSr out in front of me and frequently consulting the BM printout and jotting notes. Well their curiosity was really getting them going as they crept closer and closer to me ...when I turned toward them....made a scanning motion (Tricorder like) ....GPSr beeping as I was within 100ft of the coord...... I looked a bit concerned at first then looked up and said....its okay...the readings are fine now. .....eyes wide...they high tailed it out of the park without a word as I did all I could do not to fall over laughing. Found the BM's and then went back to my car and LMAO for a while as I thought about it more. ....yeah I'm twisted like that. --------------- Bushwhacking is much easier in an M1 Abrams!
  8. I was doing a cache up in Maine while on vacation back in August and what started out as a solitary find.....rather quickly turned into a crowded area.....just as I was sitting on a rock overlooking the ocean signing the log. ....just then a family came up to me and asked if I found that container stuffed in the rocks there. I asked if they were Geocachers but they had no idea what that was but said their kids had found the container there earlier and they opened it up and checked it out. The parents made the kids put it back though without taking anything. I explained why it was there and the general gist of geocaching and thanked them for not messing with it. They seemed quite interested in the whole thing and said they'd check out the website. Dont know if they ever joined or not but I was impressed with their decency to respect something that obviously wasn't theirs to mess with. ------------------ Bushwhacking is much easier in an M1 Abrams!
  9. Nice to be in such esteemed company here. I was a 67Y (Attack Helicopter Crewchief) and 67N (Utility Helicopter Crewchief) from 1986 until 1993. Then I became a 19K (M1 Armor Crewman) as a gunner and then tank commander. Eventually got around to going to OCS in 1997-98 and wouldn't accept any branch except Armor for my commission! Just love those tanks! As an Armor officer I've been a PL, XO and Staff weenie and now I'm getting ready for command. Also currently preparing for a long overseas deployment soon. Up until now....other than training missions here and there and a few local deployments....the most notable thing I've done in my military career was responding to "WTC ground-zero" on 9-11-01. My unit at that time (1-101 CAV NYARNG) was the first unit to respond to the situation and while the missions changed from S&R to various security tasks...we remained deployed for around 6 months. My only TravelBug thus far was derived from that deployment..... "WTC Bug". Hope to start another TB overseas on my upcoming deployment and see if it can make it back here before I do. Godspeed to those of you already over there and my eternal thanks to those of you that have already served in whatever capacity. -------------------- Bushwhacking is much easier in an M1 Abrams!
  10. Thanks for all the replies. 15Tango...great explanation of UTM to MGRS!! Much appreciated. As for breaking track.....naaaa....that Never happens. LOL ------------ Bushwhacking is much easier in an M1 Abrams!
  11. Yes my GPSr is a Magellan SportTrak Pro. So I take it that the military grid system I was asking about it called MGRS and presumably I can set my receiver to that system? If so...very cool...and a big thanks. I'll have to play with it later and see if I can change it to that. Still lots of features on it that I haven't utilized yet. I hope its in there though because a software conversion just wont cut it when I'm out in the field and will need my GPSr to give me the coords that match my maps. Thanks and regards!
  12. I did a search on this and couldn't find any other post about it. ....so here it is.... My GPS can be set to use a variety of coordinate systems such as WGS84, NAD27, UTM etc.... but none of these appear to be compatible with the military Grid Coordinate system. Military Grid coordinates display their accuracy in the number of digits used.....a 4 digit coordinate gets you within 1000 meters. An 8 digit coord. gets you a within 10 meters. and a 10 digit coord. gets you within a meter. The world is broken up into sections with a two letter prefix for each area and then sub divided within each section into numerical grids. What I'd like to know is, are any of the other existing "civilian" coordinate systems compatible with the military grid system and if so what is it called and can it be used in a GPS? Thanks and regards, Eltee1
  13. quote:Originally posted by J&MBella:..... Also at some point will you take NYGO up on their offer to become the approver for NY? It seems that the density of caches will continue to increase. Thank you for doing such a thankless job. ..... I'm still really curious what the thinking is behind limiting the amount of approvers so much. I really think as a minimum that each state should have their own approver if not more. I'd even support an approver per county! Less workload for approvers means more personal service and faster approvals. I really haven't heard what the argument is against more approvers???? Thanks and regards, Eltee1
  14. Is NJADMIN the only approver for the upstate NY area?...as well as the other areas he must cover! I can imagine how swamped that could make them but I was wondering if those of us that have submitted caches for approval have another recourse when this happens? ....I mean is there another process or person that can be requested to intervene when the primary submitter is too overloaded to provide timely approvals. What brings this up for me is that I submitted a cache on Oct 11th and here it is 6 days later and still no word about the status of my cache. I truly am sympathetic to the amazing amount of work that an approver must face but perhaps some of these approval regions need to be narrowed a bit to better serve the GC community. Regards, Eltee1
  15. Thanks guys! Holding down the button was part I wasn't aware of to get to that screen. Just pressing the button quick brings up other choices. Didn't see that in the manual though. Oh well.....thanks. That helps a bunch! Eltee
  16. I'm fairly new to this so it may turn out to be a dumb questions but here goes... Normally I download the cache coordinates I need or plot them on MapSend Topo and upload them to my GPS unit at home. This works for most regular caches but on multi's I run into a problem. I can't figure out how to enter a coordinate on the fly in the field directly into my SportTrak Pro. Is this even possible on this unit? All I can find is entering distance and azmith from already set waypoints but that doesn't help when I really need to enter a coordinate to find the next location. Any help on this? TIA. Eltee
