  1. Just be aware that if a cacher finds a cache set by another cacher, then at a future time adopts that cache -it will show the 'owner' as finding their own cache...

Around here that is an acceptable practice to adopt a cache you have previously found. Still bad form to log a find on a cache that you placed originally.

  2. SO, I actually do not own a gps so I do letterboxing alot instead, however, while letterboxing I came upon a geocache out in the open that has lost it's way. There was no lid on it and the log books or what I could make them out to be did not list a name or owner of the cache. It was found in lazelle woods park in lewis center ohio. I tried doing a basic search for the location but no avail. Is there any other way to search for the owner of it to let them know their cache needs severe upkeep?

Found the town on the maps, but couldn't see the park.

Could you tell us nearby streets names or route numbers

where that park is located ?

  3. The party reporting the OP to a reviewer may been concerned about the OP getting their underwear in a knot over a needs archive note on the cache page. They may have decided the private email was better than putting on the flame suit.

IMHO: Seeing a NO TRESSPASSING sign would cause me to abandon a hunt.

  4. I looked and looked and finally found the perfect place for my cache and when I found it there was a micro there already. Lame! The log had not been signed for over a year, so I signed it. How do i find out if it is the final for a multi or unknown cache or if it has been archived?

My 1st step would be to record the coords for that location.

Then do a search for nearest caches to see what pops up if anything.

Next as others said try to match cacher names & dates to that area.

If those all fail ask an area reviewer if that spot is clear for a new cache.

  5. Haven't see this topic in the update note thread. Are e-mails to other uses now limited to seeing just one line at a time? The text entry box only allowed on character line (Twitter-esque), but the message was fine. Hopefully a reasonably sized note entry box will be available for communication.

Great annoyance only seeing the current line of type and none of the prior lines as we used to see when composing a mesg.

  6. This is from the manufacturer of one of the most popular handheld GPS's for cachers. The "new application" they mention was an add-on after the Oregon was released. They originally left "Averaging" out of the system because they claimed it wasn't needed. After feedback from cachers, they realized that in an application like caching, their statement that a single-sample "waypoint will likely be within 30ft of the ground truth" isn't necessarily good enough.

If Garmin realized that their units needed averaging for caching, maybe their users should take the same advice.

They also left it of the Colorados.

Which I always thought was stupid, even my Garmin GPS III had it.

  7. When I place a new cache I usually take readings,

then return the following day navigating to that waypoint for actual placement.

If its the same spot (within a couple of feet)then I go with the 1st readings.

Otherwise I may avg the spot again. depends on how obvious the hiding location

may be. Sometimes a single reading is sufficient, sometimes multiple (using avg

function) may be necessary for accuracy.

  8. That is why reviewers use online mapping tools - the same ones available to cache owners.

    Could we have examples, please?

I ask because one tool I used in the past (don't recall which one)

didn't show the proper position of a RR line so I could make a placement

far enough away. The same tool even showed existing caches to be on the

opposite side of the RR line.

  9. I do not see any ALR here. It is listed as a mystery cache. The coordinates take you to the entrance of the museum, and from there you are expected to track down virtual answers -- this cache was placed long before virtuals were restricted so it is grandfathered in place.

I was there on a Sunday when the museum was closed, so it is on my list of things to do when I am in Lodi at the right time.

The phrase "Once you have found the location you should log in FIRST"

may relate to signing a guestbook at the museum, not a geocache logbook.

  10. Is it possible for me and a friend to jointly start a cache in our area, we are going to try and do a Big night cache and possible a 6 part multi.

    Thanks

Only one can be the actual "owner". You can put both names on the cache page, but when the name is clicked on, the profile that will pop up will be the account that the cache page is registered to. Only one account will automatically recieve the emailed logs, but the other person can put a watch on the page or add it to a bookmark list that is set up to receive notifications.

In agreement with everything knowschad just said.

Also in this area there are cachers who besides having

their own accts have established an impromptu team name

    for joint cache placements.

  11. As a general rule, it is illegal to stop on Interstates, but this is really on the county road where it passes over the interstate. In most areas, its not illegal to stop on county roads.

Looking at the satelite view and photo gallery on the page,

seems obvious that one stops on the county road (probably not illegal)

and not above the traffic lanes on the Interstate.

One could also park on that county road on either side of the

bridge and walk to the center.

  12. Is there any record of someone being electrocuted at an LPC due to a ground short in the wiring?

Nope. Been plenty of speculation, but not one single report has surfaced here. Why? Have you got one?

Sidetracking the question: Have come close to being stung by Yellowjackets nesting in the skirt.
