  1. Usual when ther is no more than 3 of us we sign individually.

Recently as a group of 8 on a cache run we created a group name for the day and at each stop one person would sign for all with that name. Then for our on-line logs we would note that it was a group find and the name used.

This past weekend was an exception. Went on a night cache for a long hike through the woods. All 20+ of us signed individually, but was a full sized logbook.

  2. We used to receive this Fri am, but now it shows up much later in the day.

The problem is that it dated through Wednesday and contains info for events on Thursday and so forth. Kind of hard to attend an event on Thursday if you don't get the notification until Friday.

Unless there is an option (that I can not find)to select the day of the week to receive the newsletter/update, it is semi-worthless for getting up to date info.

  3. The 1st rated 5/5 that We were not able to accomplish was located in the middle of a lake and required either a boat or plane to reach the destination. Not having a close friend with a plane and lost access to co-worker with a boat we never did this one. Even so IMHO that one is not truly a 5/5 as the virtual cache should be clearly visible upon arrival at GZ.

So set the sights on another 5/5 rating within reasonable distance of home.

Found that one, but didn't think it was properly rated as it was clearly visible at GZ. Though the terrain required wading through deep water, no special equipment was needed. So the terrain rating was also higher than it should have been.

  4. There is a group in this area who hold an annual almost mega-event.

For the event they place many permanent caches a few months before the event.

They ask the reviewer(s) to hold publication until the the conclusion of the event. This years caches were then published about 6:00 pm that day. Only the attendees had access to them on the event day. The reason being their events all have an associated 'game' for which clues must be gathered from each cache. So essentially all the cache locations are 'reserved'.

So answer the original question. Work with the reviewer.

They may want several weeks notice to get it together for you.

  5. Or a dead skunk is really only a skunk skin.

Looking for a cache where a bunch of cachers had been searching for awhile.

They said dead skunk over there, I said my GPS is pointing over there.

Started poking near it with a stick when a more experienced cacher decided maybe the rest of the crew just scared and he picked it up to find it was merely a skunk skin.

  6. Obviously if you walk the RR tracks (or any part of the right-of-way), you could be cited for tresspassing. Well you can cross a track on foot or by vehicle at a marked crossing, but what if you are simple crossing at another spot?

  7. No reason a cache should live forever.I like to archive a cache when I think it has "run its course". It may be because it has been found by all the locals I expect will ever find it. Or it could be because the area needs a break from the traffic. Or I may have just gotten bored with it. But when I do that I try to either let someone else have a whack at the location to see what they come up with or I try to mix things up a bit. Change some part or all of it. Make the experience new. So, while yes the regulars have been to the area before, they're going to find something new bringing them back. Not just the same cache with a new page and GC#.

The very first cache we found, we later adopted from the CO who had moved out of town. That cache was placed in 2004 and we found it in 2007. We have kept active for all the newer cachers joining the game. Even though most of the old-timers have already found it.

  8. Ohh quick....an auction for a 'Garmin eTrex Camo GPS Receiver' finishing shortly....will this do it??

If you think the price looks good.

Should probably do some price comparisons on the different eTrex units.

  9. We have an iphone and regulary use it to find caches but have recently had a go at laying a cache but have had to resort to dragging dad out with his garmin something or other to be sure on co-ords. So we hoping to buy a unit that will give us good co-ords for hiding? Will the etrek do that?

Have not used that unit, but believe it should do a reasonable job.

  10. Just did a quick search and it looks like older technology.

Doesn't appear to be water resistent.

Suggest you look for something else.

People have suggested if you are on a budget the Gramin Etrek is a good unit.

  11. Can anyone tell me how to change the cords on published cache. I have had several comments on my caches that the cords were too far off. Help Please.

Go the log function (found, dnf, etc)

As the cache owner you will also find others including:

    update coordinates.

Simply plugin the appropriate correction. This works for a reasonable distance

Beyond a certain distance requires the assistance of your reviewer.

I'm sure if you try to put in too much of a change you will get an error message, otherwise it will correct the location for you.
