I just downloaded the POI Loader and when I try to use it with my Colorado 300 I get these errors:
There was an error communicating with device.....
followed by:
Some devices were found; however, none have the necessary capabilities........
I believe I have the latest firmware and software.
Anyone have a clue to the problem and a solution?
Use the advanced mode and choose the POI folder on the Colorado as the destination. It is a problem with the current POI Loader.

Checking PA, I found this tile area would not select:N 40 06 thru N 41 00 by W 74 00 thru W 75 50. Roughly including counties of Berks, Bucks, Lehigh and Montgomery and cities of Philadelphia and Allentown.

Maps on Colorado 300.
The base map is something like gmapbamp.img Gotta have that.
Using MapSource I created a file from the Ibycus Canada source which was named (the default) gmapsupp.img and renamed it gmapprom.img (a Colorado supported filename).
Then I loaded the Ibycus USA maps and wrote a new file of gmapsupp.img.
So now I have US & CA street maps of the areas I want.

Had same problem today. Went on road trip said @#$% is the cache along a route PQ caches I loaded before I left the house. Compared that file and another PQ. Like others have said change Gpx to gpx and it works. Used notepad to make the correction.
May have had the same problem 2 weeks ago with a regular PQ,
but didn't read that file just reverted to the prior copy and waited for
the next PQ run to reload again.
I guess someone at gc.com needs to figure out why this is happening.

Finally decided to give this a try. Did the download, brought up MapSource, selected the county segements to try and loaded on my Colorado 300. Don't see the 'new' streetlevel maps until I adjust zoom level down to 0.2 mi or lower. Is that correct, is not possible to see the streets at higher zoom or is there some setting on my CO I need to change?

I mostly use my Palm 700p for looking up found travel bugs and logging those that I only wish to mark as discovered. Sometimes I will check for up to date log entries on caches. Most everything else I do on my Colorado or at home when I've finished my field work.

I've read a bit about the Magellan Crossover. Seems like it would work as an auto navigator, but how does it work as a cache sniffer?
Does fairly well for street nav. Mediocre for caching, when you get within 30 feet of a cache it announces you are near your destination then stops tracking. The good news was I got it at Costco for $229.00.
But, I brought a Colorado 300 because I thought it would be better for caching.

The battery CAN be replaced by the user; however it is not a job for the faint-hearted.
I can send a link to a site that has instructions and a website where you can buy the battery.
The unit is suitable for geocaching, though lacks fancy features.
I would be interested in the link if you'd be kind enough to post it. Always good to have a backup plan.

i used a knife to break the old battery loose from its connecting pins then soldered
the new one to those points.

I am looking for a gps unit for geocaching, I found this old unused Garmin GPS III unit that my dad bought when it first came out but never used it!
So I am wondering, is it neccesary that I buy another GPS unit? I mean can anyone tell me is this old unit so out dated that it is no use for geocaching?
Up until a couple of weeks ago (when I bought a Colorado -- long, sad story) I was using an 8 or 9-year old GPS III+ to geocache. Works fine, although you probably can't use any of the fancy "download to my GPS" features of the web site. The GPS III+ is a mapping unit. Not sure about the GPS III. You don't really need maps to cache, although they are nice to have.
There is also a potential issue as to how long an old GPS III will continue to function. These units have an internal battery which keeps the memory (waypoints, maps, settings) alive. Like the (much more recent) iPod, the battery cannot be replaced by the user. Garmin claimed a 10-year life for the battery. Mine's still going after 8 or 9 years. Read what you want into that.
You have nothing to lose by giving the GPS III a shot. If you don't like it, you can always invest in a newer unit.

I decided before I got stupid again I copied all of my 300 to my PC; however previously I accidently deleted my Recreational.gpf. Can someone me a copy of that file?

Funny you mentioned Costco because they aren't selling them anymore. They weren't on the site once the update was available on magellan's site. I'm wondering if they sent what they had left back to magellan for the updates.
That's interesting. I know there were on there within the last 7-10 days. Oh well. I'll wait for Magellan to bring out the Crossover 2 before I reinvest in that model. I had such high hopes for it too.
Or out of stock. I bought one in late Nov, near Christmas they weren't showing them on the web site.
Then after the 1st of the year they reappearred. My guess is Costco buys X numbers of any product
then later buys (or not) X amount gain. For restock the item disappears until it is back in stock.

An extra note so far as retrieving the update.
Although I had already done the DL but had not run/installed it,
I ran the webupdater and lo and behold it was going to retrieve the 2.40 update for me.
Gee everyone is posting faster than I can compose.
I ran the download without the updater so that is NOT a necessary step.
Apparently you can do it either way.

I bought the Crossover in December for using as a multipurpose device.
It doesn't seem to work as well as to be expected for Geocaching ( in trail mode);
hence I just bought a Colorado 300 which so far works much better on the trail.
However loading caches as POI's into the Crossover alerts me to the presence
of a cache while I am driving and will route me to areas where caches are present.
In regards to the original question posted.
My opinion is as I saw another person state:
Buy a Street Nav and a handheld for Geocaching.

As we passed through Erie,PA a couple of months on Interstate 90, ALL of the roads (including what should have been in the base map) completely DISAPPEARED. The range was at least 5 miles on either side of the town.
