  1. If you need a combination to open a container, does that automatically make it a puzzle cache? I would like to make an easy cache that requires a combo, supplied on the cache page, to open, but I am concerned it will be ignored if it's listed as a mystery cache. I looked in the guidelines but can't seem to find the answer.

  2.

Jumping back on topic, I brought this issue up with out local reviewer here, just to see if they had heard anything through the grapevine. I got this e-mail reply back.

"Unfortunately, it's true. One cacher took it upon themselves to dig into the matter and contact VDOT. This is the new template that will be used for any new caches on VDOT property.

    snipped for brevity

Thanks for the info Nealio. I would rather not see that as policy but it's difficult to please everybody I guess.

  3. I got an idea. How about creating a proximity limitation such that caches can't be placed within 150' of an active roadway? :drama:

I realize that the comment was something of a tongue in cheek remark designed to sell more popcorn. But that limitation would probably do away with 3/4 of all downtown caches. So common sense is at least possible, even though rare.

  4. I haven't been able to find anything that VDOT has announced and their site doesn't mention it. So I'm not sure if it's a parking problem or a people in the roadway issue. The issue, and solutions, are the same either way.

For what it's worth, I have seen Guardrail Caches where there was legal parking and they were positioned so they didn't cause the finder to be a highway hazard.

  5. Our reviewer posted this note on some archived caches:

Archiving at the request of the Virginia DOT. Guardrail caches are now prohibited by VDOT.

It seems obvious to me that the only reason the Department of Transportation would even be aware of geocaching is because there were caches placed in such a way that it was hazardous to look for them. Is there a way we could encourage people to consider our impact on traffic safety (for other states, the damage is done in Virginia) or do we have to rely on the usually unreliable common sense?

  6. If you start with a well made contaier it should not fall apart from the weather, but in the best case wood will still weather. Look at a wooden deck or something else that sits outside all year. Even sealed it slowly turns grey and the finish will eventually need to be redone. You can make a wooden container work, but it will not look like well finished furniture for long.

Nice box by the way, hope you can find a way.

  7. I seriously doubt all CCW holders are "by nature cautious individuals." Although I'm sure many CCW holders are prudent, I'm also fairly sure some will be overconfident and act more bravely and/or more foolishly than they should. It's a potential tendency that CCW holders should be aware of.

I have read your posts so far and I have a serious question:

Other than the fact that in some states a person can get a CCW without training and a study that does not include CCW holders, are there any other reasons you believe CCW holders are not cautious in general?

If you reread the quotation you cited, then you should discover that I'm not saying CCW holders are not cautious "in general."

My impression was that you disagreed with the post you quoted ("That is my experience as well, CCW holders are by nature cautious individuals.") Sorry if I misunderstood, but actually i am glad to hear you agree with that.

I ask because of the hundred or so CCW holders I know (admittedly not at all a random sample) I can't think of a single one that I would consider reckless.

  9. A lot of my finds are coming home from work, and since I can't carry at work (or even have a gun in the car) I seldom carry while caching. I also have concerns when a cache takes me by a school, sometimes without knowing ahead of time. It seems unlikely that the issue would come up, but I would rather not explain to the officer that I didn't know I would be caching at a school when I left home.

When I do carry while caching it is so uncommon to have somebody watch me stumble around and look under logs that I have no worries about printing.

  10. It's not worded the best, but you can figure out the gist if you try.

I agree it is difficult to figure out what I am looking for. If you can word it better I would appreciate it.

Anyway, by no means am I suggesting a "least favorite" option or trying to complain about certain hides.

  11. I was looking for a cache the other day that was a favorite for at least one person. It wasn't the sort of place I like, too much trash everywhere. It made me wonder what sort of cache people would NOT favorite. There will always be exceptions, so I will not say I would NEVER favorite a cache like this, but if it's trashy or in a sticky sharp plant the cache would have to be exceptional in some other way to get a favorite from me.

What are the things that generally rule out a cache from your favorite list?

  12. In addition to difficulty and terrain, we need a rating for how accurate the coords are. So Someone who believes the way to make a hide challenging is to lie about its location might have a hide rated D1 T1 A3 for a lamp post cache on the other side of the parking lot from the coordinates. I'll stick to A1's. Mistakes are one thing, misdirection is another.

(I don't actually believe we will, or should, add another rating. Just making a point)
