  1. I discovered my calender in the stats and found it interesting. In one of those quirks of statistics, in several places I had either three days in a row, or the same day in three consecutive months when I didn't find a cache. I've been trying to "fill in" all the days (with out complete success!) but I can't figure out why it matters. It's still fun anyway.

Anybody else trying to color in their calender?

  2. Should be OK. Just mention it on the cache page so the cachers looking for it will know. I've seen pages that recommend wearing orange during the season. Others, especially controlled hunts that are only done on certain weekends, will disable the listing for the duration of the hunt. It just depends on how practical it is to look for a cache while hunters are there.

  3.

Would this project fit into geochaching guidlines?

    ..............

To be honest I also thought giving it a serious background - like for the vicitms of Norway, Somalia, Afghanistan - for fallen people around the world we think of from time to time. I care about these victims in Nowary, I'm an empathic and emotional person.

    .......

I think the gardening thing is interesting. But a cache as you describe it, even well intentioned, would violate the "agenda" guidelines and would not be approved.

  4. In my experience you are "lost in the crowd" when there are a lot of people. Even though it feels like they are all watching you, they are focused on their own little corner of the world. It's when you are the only other person around that their attention is on you.

  5. I'm sorry if you don't understand what I am trying to get across: the possible circumstance of having not seen him ahead of time, driving the very little distance up the road to the cache, us splitting up in the dark in the woods (again, not knowing he was there) & one of us encountering him while alone.

I certainly understand the possibilities of a strange man crawling around in your vicinity, and the extra danger if you don't know he is there. Just in case I am not making myself understood: If I was armed, in great shape, and trained in martial arts, I would not have knowingly gone in to that situation. Disaster averted is a risk free win for you.

I feel like I'm repeating myself so I guess I am finished here. Be safe and get good training if you decide to get the CCL.

  6. I'll apologize if I misunderstood. For most of my life "headlights" were only on vehicles. If the headlights were on your head and you were miles from your vehicle then yes, you have to deal with the situation differently. If you were in the vehicle, then I still do not understand.

  7. So the 3 of us are going for this cache in the woods, & we near a cache. Right up the road from the cache (but not so near that the cache could be the excuse) our headlights fall upon a man belly crawling through the bushes. I'm not kidding. Middle of nowhere, 1 am. Full grown dude crawling through some bushes.. I'm not sure what the craziest part was. That it happened, or that we got the cache anyways..

I don't get it. To me the whole purpose of any self defence tool is to be assit you in getting out of an unexpected situation safely, not to win avoidable fights. What kind of circumstances could it be that you didn't just drive away and call 911?

  8. Stuff I TRY to always carry:

    GPSr

    extra batteries

    flashlight

pocket knife (I carry that when not caching anyway)

    pens

Stuff that I have used to make a cache retrieval tool:

    magnet

    mirror

    tape

    coat hanger

    tweezers

    paper clip

    screwdriver

    para-cord

Stuff that has come in handy or I sometimes wish I had, even if in the car:

    camera

    extra log sheets

    notebook

    swag

    plastic bags

paper towels (to dry out container)

    drinking water on long days

Did I mention extra batteries and a pen? Without those, we tend to be nothing more than people wandering around who may or may not know where they are.

  9. Another 60CSX here.

    Rate about a 9 out of 10.

    Like: Accuracy, battery life, adaptability.

Dislike: The biggest thing is it is not paperless. It would be a 10 otherwise. Very small thing, the four direction button is a little vague, I prefer the way Garmin does it on the Etrex.

Buy next: I am happy enough with the 60 that I am not even looking at what else is available.

  10. First, Smithfield, where the cache was, is a very nice small town.

Second, VDOT covers all public roads in Virginia, even privately owned public roads such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

And it probably doesn't matter anyway, but VDOTs website doesn't mention geocaching.

  11. In my previous unanswered question I asked why you contacted VDOT. But I just re-read your first post and see that you contacted the state police first. Am I correct that the reason was for that was you were worried about the placement giving geocaching a black eye because of the lack of permission?
