  1. OK, I'll post the start of this in its entirety:

Okay, I'll play. Please show me ONE post where I EVER said either

    1) people should be allowed to log bogus Finds without them being deleted, or

    2) people playing this game should be allowed to do whatever the heck they wanted no matter what.

Be careful, I have most definitely said that bogus logs don't hurt anyone, and if they're left on a cache it's not something to be upset about, and I've also said I'd delete them from my own caches, but none of that is equal to what you're accusing me of.

I've also said that people should be allowed to play the game the way they want as long as it's not keeping someone else from playing their game, or as long as it's not hurting someone else's game. But again, none of that is what you're accusing me of.

I'm somewhat new here but I see that this dead horse has already been beaten. I don't plan to go back over your posts to find contridictions, I'll just use what's quoted here in one post.

If as you say in the quoted section:

1 people should be allowed to play the game the way they want as long as it's not keeping someone else from playing their game

2 bogus logs don't hurt anyone

3 bogus logs are not worth getting upset about

Then why are they wrong and why would you delete them?

  2. I suspect this has been answered before but the search function keeps giving up on me.

There is a cache near me that will soon be archived. I haven't found it yet, but it seems from the logs that it was placed by a cacher that quit the game and does not respond to email. Should I take it out with me after it is archived? That makes sence to me, but I don't like to step on toes unintentionally.

    Thanks, Griz

Might the implication of the second statement fufill the requirements of the question?

  4. I look at it like this: When I place a cache, I'm inviting people to try it. They are my guest for the short time they are there. I can not insure their safety at all times, but I want my guests to be at least as safe around my cache as they were while driving there.

    So my criteria would be:

If I had a great place to bring a guest and they had to be very careful getting there, I would warn them about the dangers and list it.

If my sole purpose for for bringing them there is to test their ability to dodge traffic, I would not.

I respect and appreciate your perspective. However, I don't share it. Just a quick search of the keyword "extreme" shows 137 caches. "Insane" brings up 32. While I'm sure that not all of these are dangerous caches, I know for a fact that some of them are, and are very popular. Just look at Vinnie's caches!

I guess since you don't only want to hide caches in safe places, then only hide caches in safe places. Watch out for PI!

OK, we'll just disagree on the joys of playing in the street. As long as it's legal, approved by the reviewer, and the description warns of the danger then go right ahead. To answer your question, I'm not sure how to rate it. Maybe 1-1N4D to account for the night and day difference?

  6. To me the new rules are perfect. They retain the simplicity of the original version, but clarify that signing the log is required*. There will always be folks who argue over the meaning of the word "if" when it is written with a capital I on the second Tuesday of the week and the font means so muchit makesmyheadhurtjustlisteningtothat!

*as required as it can be in a fun but meaningless game based on the honor system

  7. Judging by the description, all the stages will be within a reasonable hike. So you are right, coordinates that take you more than a mile away are in error. My guess is you have a decimal error. For instance, when you add 37 11.048 and 0.048 minutes, you should get 37 11.096 With those listed small additions, the second stage should be within 500 feet of the first. And no spoilers please, I haven't found that one yet.

  8. Two questions for the "no rules" crowd.

    1. You create a tough cache. It required a boat ride, a long hike, and a good climb just to place it. An hour after it's published somebody logs a FTF and notes "I was in the area when this popped up, didn't sign the log because it was against my beliefs". Is that OK because it doesn't harm anyone?

    2. A while back I looked for a cache that from the hints, location, and description was obviously a LPC. It was missing. If it becomes common to see clearly missing caches such as that one logged as "found but not signed", would you keep looking for caches?

  9. It still surprises me that so many folks are buying into the "I'm caching for the joy of the hunt so I don't sign the log" line that this guy is selling. If it's just the joy of finding it, why does he log it online?

Couch caching brings up so many questions:

How do you decide which caches to pretend to visit?

Do you log false DNFs for the joy of an extra tough virtual hunt?

Is it harder to log a false find on Micros compared to Regulars?

    It boggles the mind.

  10. If you don't sign a log, you aren't harming anyone.

If you force someone to play the way you want, just because you want them to do it your way, you are harming others.

If you try to dream up and constantly repeat the same magical mystical situations which are seldom or never going to actually happen, for the sole purpose of providing fictitious proof of an indefensible point, what are you really doing?

At the risk of falling off my soap box, I'll give this a shot.

Armchair caching (logging false finds without even visiting GZ) harms the game itself. If this turns into a game where people imagine a cache, and others imagine they found it, people will drift away from hiding and finding actual caches. Admitedly this guys virtual visits all over the world are a very tiny step in that direction, but why accept it as part of the game?
