  1. That's great that you have the option to disable a cache! Lucky reviewer options. Recently around my area there was a cache that had not been found since last year. There were several DNF's on it. I emailed a polite notice to the owner and didn't even get a note back, no thank you or nothing. Pretty much ignored... so I sent a quick email to the local reviewer and they disabled the cache. Well, lo and behold, the cache has been repaired and is up and running. So, Mister Knight, it's sad but true... it happens nowadays. I don't understand why someone can't take the time to reply and at least say thank you for the note.
  2. Glenda, of the East. It's "Guh-linda"... Are you a good witch or a bad witch?
  3. Oh great... I've been working on all of the other requirements... and now you throw in the mental institution!! Does it count that I send most of the people to a mental institution that come through the ER that I work at, if they need a MH admission? I can increase the amount that a Dr. sends by saying just a few words.....(Remember behind every good Dr. there is a great nurse who runs everything )
  4. This is where you would be incorrect. Jesus spent his adult life traveling to where people were to teach them. He did not wait for the people to come to him. He went and found people. He was an example to his disciples to be copied. No one said anything about badgering anyone. But if you were around Jesus do you think he would have talked about the weather? You may be approached by a Christian trying to share something positive with you sometime in your life. You may not want to hear it now, but may change your mind in the future. To sum up Jesus was an example for Christians to copy and his last command of his followers was to go and make disciples. You cant really do that without sharing what you know with others. And then he annoyed the ones who didn't want to hear him... so they killed him. There were others who did the same... David Koresh <sp> comes to mind... and the same thing happened... he pushed his ways on others and was killed. This certainly doesn't imply that I think Mr. Koresh was a prophet, like Jesus, in any way... it's just for conversation.
  5. We have a cache similar to that here where I live. I tried emailing the owner, who has been on within the last 30 days and since my email was sent, and received no reponse. So I sent a message to the Administrator for our area. They temporarily disabled it and we are all awaiting a response. Hopefully they'll get it fixed up and running again.... if not.. it's a great place to put a new cache!
  6. All you guys are such good convincers... I guess it's mostly religious tracts and stuff like that that I find offensive. I am not that offended by religious symbols. Thanks for the replies to my post... it keeps me thinking and honest... I don't want you all to think I am a big time jerk or anything . As a side note, I have a King James Bible and a Quran in my personal library that I use to look things up. I am not as offended by religion as I may seem. It's more of the proselytizing that gets to me. As far as political buttons... I'd be glad to forward any of them to you if you want them...
  7. I personally think it is a great idea. There are some events that have GPS and geocaching lessons... so I would assume that inviting people from outside of geocaching would make sense.... I'll have to remember that when I decide to try to organize an event around here.
  8. I would not stock my caches with anything that could be offensive. I also remove all offensive materials that are placed in my caches. Offensive includes religious and political materials. ANY religious or political material should not be placed in a cache. NONE, ZERO, ZILCH..... NONE!!! On the other hand, if religious/ political materials are printed on a personal card, coins, etc.. then I will allow that... it would be rude not too. I recently removed a religious tract from one of my caches.... sorry I am not Christian... I don't push my religious beliefs on anyone else.... and I expect the same in return. I have also recently pulled a campaign button out of a cache... how tacky is that!!!
  9. If you have all the caches downloaded in your gps.. then doing a simple search for the nearest cache, after you are in the spot you intend to place your cache.. then your gps should show you how far you are away from the nearest cache from your location... Does that make sense, I am not that good at articulating words into mental pictures..... If you are an engineer... try this..... 1. Download caches into your gps from the area that you intend to place your cache. 2. Go to the spot that you intend to place your cache. 3. Be sure to have your gps unit on, and then find the function that let's you locate the nearest cache. 4. Write down, or memorize, how far that cache is. 5. Place your cache, if it is more than .10 miles from the next nearest cache. 6. Don't place your cache if it is less than .10 miles from the next nearest cache. 7. If you placed your cache, mark your position. 8. Input the information to the gc.com site and wait for approval/denial.
  10. If I bump out mine to 50 miles, then I still have 1053 unfound caches.
  11. I have 16 more to find within 5 miles of my house; I have 46 more to find within 10 miles of my house; and I have 265 more to find within 20 miles of my house.
  12. Amen, brother. Sheesh. 007 adminstrators!! Cool... I've always wanted to work under cover.... where do I sign up?? Just a note, I have had no problems with the NY Admin.... if there is a problem, I work it out or move on... no big deal for me. I have found most everyone here in the Geocaching community to be helpful and fun to chat with. NY Admin has been great and I have been sure to thank her (I didn't know she was a she... of course, she's undercover) for her help and time.
  13. I will take some of that popcorn... how much is it?
  14. ... or maybe not. Profile says "Retired". (Your point is still valid though). What if NY Admin is in her 90's? 90 and probably in better health than all of us put together!!
  15. Received my NYGO coins yesterday and they are awesome. I purchased one of each and my wife says I am obsessed as I have been showing them to everyone.
  16. I actually like that placement. It might make someone that can afford it, like you for example, go ahead and do what is needed to remove them -- pay $3 a month. Since you *choose* not to support the site financially I would think you would at least have the courtesy not dictate how the site raises capital using additional methods. Instead you *choose* not to support the site financially yet you feel that you should be able to dictate to them how to run it. I am sorry, but I just don't think that is proper. In addition, if they are put out of your way so you don't notice them, isn't the whole idea of getting them noticed lost? The whole reason they are there *is* so they are noticed. To get the bang for the buck, they are in fact perfectly placed. You will just have to choose to deal with it or financially support the site directly. Some web sites don't even give you that choice. Very well said Mtn-Man!! And I agree wholeheartedly!
  17. I think what you did is perfectly okay, and New York Admin should assist with the adoption part. I would seek clarification from the TPTB. I don't see why this whole cache listing needs to be archived and restarted. The only reason that I can see on why New York Admin couldn't help with the adoption would be if the original owner didn't email you an adoption request (which in this case obviously he wouldn't), but the Admin should be able to override that... and if they can override it, it's just plain lazy to not let you adopt and not have to go through everything all over.
  18. This is why when I cache with other cachers, and my family too, I have the person who found it, hide back in the same place they found it. This eliminates the possibility that it gets placed in the wrong spot, unless of course the person who found it has real short term memory problems... or just doesn't care.
  19. I am 36. The GeoWife is 23. The kids are 5, 4 and almost 2. And then I have three older children who sometimes, on rare occasions hunt with me and they are 14, 13, and 11.
  20. Well, hopefully you drank one or two too many and added one or two extra coins in my package!!! Thanks!!
  21. Glad you said it....... and I'll leave it at that.
  22. Upstate NY has a Geo-Post Office now. Just like the old fashioned times, it is also a Hotel... now if we could just get a Railroad to pass by...hmmmm. The waypoint is GC140C8. And the link is: Grandma & Grandpa's TB Hotel and Geo-Post Office Thanks for the fun!
  23. That is the funniest dadgum thread I have ever read... I even have tears in my eyes from laughing, and my kids are staring at me thinking what is he on?
  24. This entire thread is ridiculous!! The ads are required to keep geocaching.com operational, that's the bottom line. I choose to support GC.com by purchasing a premium membership. If you don't choose that option, then you support it by viewing, and hopefully clicking on, the ads.
  25. My only question about benchmarking is what do you say to people who have no clue what you are doing? When I am geocaching, I have a little "Muggle Card" that I can hand out, like to the police or whatever. I would never go on private property to locate these, but there are some BMs that are along side of the road and close to a person's property and they may (have) ask what you are doing and one has asked by what authority do I have reason to be there? And those that are on public buildings, the Police are wondering what you are doing. I would like to do this a lot more, I just want to have an answer when I am asked. Thanks for the help!
