  1. CY1152 is apparently a reset for CY1151 after they did some construction on the road around 1973. From the current locations and orientation of Ref No 2 (see my sorry little map on the log) they just left it where it was even though it was no longer useful for directing someone towards the new station. Does it still serve any real purpose, or would they have left it for the "history"? The new station is around 24 m E of where the original station was (from the description in CY1151) It was originally about 22 m W from Ref No 2, rather than 2m east.
  2. So, if you find a marker that hasn't been reported since it was monumented in 1979, and it's in good condition and where described, you would report it on the Recovery Form as Good condition and that's all there is to it ? Too simple - I have found quite a few that haven't been reported since around 79, maybe I should start reporting them ?
  3. Found today CZ1477 Setting 59 = 1 pt CZ0099 Setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0100 Setting 7 = 1 pt Total this post = 3 pts I re-visited CZ2380, it is probably buried, in a city park so I won't dig without permission. And of course, I keep finding lots of markers that aren't in the GS database. sigh.
  4. oops, correcting thanks to the judges - I didn't find CZ2380 (yet) so CZ2397 is first for setting. I need to pay more attention to descriptions, much less attention to previous "finders". They all got this one wrong, too
  5. Sure hope the forum starts working normally sometime again, getting a little tired of having to edit the double posts...
  6. Thanks for those, Shirley, just what I needed. Yup, when even the the places you go to in order to "cool off" are having temps in the mid 90s, it's just not as much fun to be out there bushwhacking.
  7. Found today CZ2380 Setting 4 =10 first of setting CZ2397 Setting 4 Per the NGS datasheet site =1 pt CZ0055 Setting 36 = 1 pt + 5 pts <1960 = 6pts CZ0240 Setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0242 Setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0243 Setting 7 = 1 pt Total pts for post = 20 Northern people got a snow bonus, can the Southerners get a bonus for +100* temperatures ? I need to find a melting icon... edited for bad math
  8. Oops, I guess it could be for blasting, the blasting holes I've come across before were a bit smaller and perpendicular into the rock-face, but, duh, those were in mine tunnels and such. I'm sure they blasted when they built the highway - started in '33 finished in '50, widened in this stretch probably in the early '90s. So, probably left-over drill hole from the recent widening projects. Feel sorta silly for asking now It's just that it was close to the recent stakes and curb marks, so I thought it might be connected somehow. OK, a different interesting site found while trying to find a benchmark (so that this isn't a totally lame post.) I'm guessing that these might be Native American grinding holes, there are quite a few petroglyphs throughout this small range of mountains. This is not a stream bed, it's on the side of a hill, so not just the beginning of a tinaja created by stones and rushing water. First shows several holes, second shows a closeup from circled area.
  9. The chunk of rock is orginal, it's part of a large outcrop on the hillside.
  10. sorry about the duplicate blank post, the page timed out while loading . Hopefully a moderator will delete it.
  11. sorry, forum burp
  12. Benchmarking, along with geocaching, is making me a little more observant of the "smaller things" as I'm driving around. I was driving up the nearby mountain, to cool off in 90+ temps, and noticed stakes with pink ribbon - had to check it out of course, might be a benchmark I wasn't aware of. Anyway, only thing I found nearby was this nail in the road, with a badly rusted disc and a pink spray-paint circle. But, at the side of the road, I found this drilled hole. It's not immediately clear in the picture, but the top portion of the rock is sloping outward, so the hole goes straight through (which is why there is light at the bottom lol ) My eTrex shows scale, but I didn't check how deep it is. It's right next to the road and a lot of traffic at the time so I didn't stay long. Might it have something to do with surveying ? It's certainly not a sign-post hole, or a hole they might have done in preparation of blasting... Just curious.
  13. My experience : I wouldn't put anything on the page about what the cache contained. I placed a cache, listed on the page that it included an assortment of geocaching pins (which were brand new still in the plastic) and other small items. The access road was closed for the winter not long after I placed it, so it only had 3 finds before I visited first week of April. The three online logs were matched with physical logs, one cacher traded the other two took nothing. But sometime in there some cache maggot helped themselves to all of the pins - maybe they wanted to stock their own cache . Other similar experiences have left a slightly bitter taste as well. I don't mean to discourage you, hopefully you'll have better luck. As for me, I'm holding off placing the two new caches I was working on until I feel a little less disgruntled
  14. Found 4/14 CZ0736 setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0734 setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0732 setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0731 setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0730 setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0725 setting 7 = 1 pt CZ0733 setting 7 = 1 pt total this post = 7 pts
  15. Only one today...but the views were amazing from up there. CZ1710 setting 80 1 + 5 <1960 = 6 pts
  16. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to pick up trackables, because I don't want to be the last person to see them "alive". It's much worse with geocoins of course, but so often now it seems that a trackable will be logged into a cache, and then disappear into a black hole never to be seen again. Even though I do my part and log them in, I feel somehow responsible when the next online log says "no TBs or coins in cache" - and then I anxiously wait for it to eventually show up. It's such a relief when you read that the next cacher took the item, so you know it's not your "fault" when it disappears.
  17. Perhaps you can use one of these, they are different from the other Gravity Stations posted. Unfortunately, I can't provide a PID. I did a search of the NGS datasheets of up to a half mile from a near-by mark CZ2410, and nothing came up. They are both stamped Tucson 1937, one is "A" and one is "B". Odd thing, they are also very close together. Both also have a dent in the disc like they were struck with a sledge hammer or something. Back in the 70s this area had a magnetic observatory and lightning lab from the University.
  18. I've realized I didn't include a pre 1960 bonus under my setting 66 entries on 3/21. Can that bonus still be added, for HO0147 ? Found 4/1 CG0302 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0300 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0304 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0305 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0306 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0307 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0311 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0301 setting 7 = 1 pt CG0308 setting 36 = 1 pt CG0309 setting 36 = 1 pt Total for post = 10 pts The last two are both unknown monument, but I already got that bonus. Why did they classify bridges and buildings under the same settings ? booo hiss
  19. Found today 3/31 CZ2440 setting 80 first for setting = 10 pts CZ2437 setting 59 first for setting = 10 pts CZ2438 setting 17 first for setting = 10 pts AI1933 setting 15 first for setting = 10 pts CZ1829 setting 0 = 1 pt CZ2410 setting 7 = 1 pt Bonus points for 9 different settings = 10 pts total for post = 52 pts
  20. Markers found 3/27 CG0166 Setting 36 First for setting 10 pts + UNK monument 25 pts = 35 pts CG0894 setting 7 = 1 pt + 10<1935 = 11 pts CG0956 setting 7 = 1pt total for today = 47 pts Of course, I keep finding old markers that I can't find a PID for, even in the NGS database.
  21. I haven't had much luck with people posting pictures yet. I have 4 TBs that have been out for around a year now, and a grand total of 3 pictures. The one that has 2 pics hasn't moved in almost 6 months now, hope he's ok.
  22. Marks found in Zion and Bryce National Parks, 3/17 through 3/19. HO0147 setting 66 1 pt HO0148 setting 66 1 pt HO0155 setting 66 1 pt HO0149 setting 66 1 pt HO0522 setting 66 1 pt + 10 pt < 1935 = 11 pts HO0150 setting 30 1 pt + 10 pt < 1935 = 11 pts HO0154 setting 30 1 pt HO0525 setting 0 1 pt total points = 28 Now I probably won't get any for the rest of the contest, but I had to take advantage of the vacation to get all I could. There were others, but I'm unable to come up with PIDs for them.
  23. Hoover Dam marks that I can use, can't believe I missed quite a few of them. Sadly, I can't include the piers, or the ones where I forgot the GPSr GR1863 setting 0 10 first for setting + 5 <1960 = 15 pt GR0584 Setting 30 10 first for setting + 5 <1960 = 15 pts GR0585 Setting 30 1 pt GR0586 setting 30 1 pt GR0590 Setting 30 1 pt GR0592 setting 30 1 + 25 UNK monumented = 26 pts GR0593 setting 30 1 pt GR0591 setting 30 1 pt GR0587 setting 30 1 pt GR0583 setting 30 1 pt GR0576 setting 30 1 pt GR0577 setting 30 1 pt GR0580 setting 30 1 pt Total points from Hoover Dam = 65 pts +1 (thanks to correction from UNK1) = 66
  24. Ok, thanks for verifying. They're good enough for logging though
