  1. Premium membership or not you have to do this. A handheld GPSr does not have any kind of internet connection. The advantage of being a premium member is that you can make 'pocket queries' which allow you to download thousands of caches at a time to the GPSr.
  2. I use a GSAK macro with several plugins to create mine.
  3. I don't log from my phone, but send field notes instead. I type just enough in the field note to remind me about the cache and then I fill in the details on the PC when I get home.
  4. I have a non-paperless unit (Garmin Vista Hcx) and a Blackberry smartphone. I use Cachesense on the Blackberry to hold cache information. This software allow me to load PQs as well as get caches 'live' on demand from Geocaching.com. I would say (as others have said) there are three reasons that a GPSr is better than the cell phone for the kind of caching I do mostly: Battery Life (I cannot stress this enough) Ruggedness (I like caches in the woods) Satellite Reception (again, I like caches in the woods) If the phone was better at these three I would happily toss my GPSr.
  5. I was just at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago yesterday. The have a scale model of the Curiosity rover and I was thinking exactly the same thing. It would be so cool to cache on Mars
  6. I am 99% sure that GSAK gets the Favorite points when it downloads a cache from the API so I think that is now included in an API download. This is borne out by looking at the 'example response xml body' on [link removed] page. There you can see that part of the response to an API request for is: <FavoritePoints>2147483647</FavoritePoints> Also, I imagine you could use [link removed]this method to get all the users who favorited a cache and simply add them up to get the total number of favorite points.
  7. Do you have location services turned on? Setting-General-Location Services
  8. Maxpedition is great. I have had my eye on one of these (click) for a while.
  9. It also appears that you have not checked any boxes for a day to run the pocket query. A given pocket query can only be run once a day with a maximum of five different queries per day.
  10. Is it necessary to make fun of the OP for wanting to read a EULA? What about the EULA that promised $1000 to whoever read it? I totally agree. The OP is making a very reasonable request and there is never any reason to be rude. What really surprises me is why Groundspeak has not replied with anything to help after all this time.
  11. I have cached in other countries and had this issue as well. Currently I do the same as you. I do not have a paperless GPSr, but use the CacheSense app on my smartphone for the paperless. I have often wondered if any other geocaching apps have a feature to integrate with the Google translate API for this purpose. That would be a really slick feature. Maybe something you could suggest (assuming you have a smartphone) on these forums.
  12. You can see the archived listing here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d911523a-3658-4348-86cd-777730b5b68a
  13. Agreed. And the cache title. Very cute idea! Might not work for all possible coords, though. Funny, I didn't even read the cache title. I disagree on it not working for all coords though obBLgShEZI M3Su
  14. Uhhh, that could be said about geocaching itself
  15. What a great puzzle idea. I have not seen one like this before in my area. Very clever. The hint does give it all away.
  16. If you use Firefox then get Greasemonkey add in and then download the GC little helper script. This adds a box on every GC.com page where you can type in a GC code and jump to that cache.
  17. Not a stupid question. it would certainly be possible to do. I think reason no one has done it is because you would have to keep the GPSr in the device active at all times to keep checking. On my Blackberry, this gives me a battery life of about 4 hours. This kind of battery drain is usually more than people would like. Maybe some devices do better than this.
  18. The only way I know is to delete the found cache
  19. From what I can read on Google, if you have an iPad with 3G then it has a GPS chipset otherwise it will not. All iPads have a digital compass but this will only work like a handheld compass and tell you which way is north but not which way to a cache if it does not know your position on the earth relative to the position of the cache which would require a GPS chipset in the device.
  20. GC232EV (Out of Sight) requires a number of things (some of which are physical objects): 1. 12 Inch Ruler 2. Video Camera 3. Thermos of hot water 4. Polarized sunglasses 5. Knowledge of Braille 6. Knowledge of Shakespeare sonnets 7. AA and AAA batteries 8. Knowledge of Binary 9. Absorbent dish towel 10. Telephone I have figured out the starting point for this one, but have not attempted it yet.
  21. I have never used any GS app, but from other apps I know that the application has to stored the API key for you on the device so it can use this to connect whenever it needs to. Is it possible that for some reason the app is having trouble storing the key locally on your device? I have no idea why this might be or how to fix it, but it just seemed like a possibility here.

    Stealth?

I agree with StarBrand. I used to be worried about people seeing me, but now I just go and get it. The reason people say it requires stealth is because of the fear that someone will see you get the cache and then be curious and go get it themselves and not return it because they don't understand geocaching and what it is about. Personally, I generally feel that if someone hides a cache in a place where it is likely someone will be seen finding it then they should expect the cache to get muggled every now and then and be prepared to replace it. Edit to say that I only go after caches that are posted on this site so I don't know how common it is for there to be caches from other sites that are not also cross-posted here.
