Like HikerJames, I also have a Vista HCx. I'm looking for the TOPO map and found several listed on eBay for around $90. Reading the description, it lists that it will work with lots of GPS units including Vista, Vista C, and Vista CX. No mention of Vista HCx. Anyone know for sure if maps that work with Vista Cx will work with the Vista HCx? Maybe I need to order a program direct from Garmin. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I must have mis understood the whole thing. I understood that there was a 24 digit number that was included with the purchase that allowed me to download a map and put it on the unit. The 24 digit number often comes on a piece of paper with the unit but on some models we were supposed to get it via the web. That's how I understood things. If the software is not available for download, why were they giving access numbers away? Doesn't make sense to me. But since I didn't get the number anyway, maybe it all makes sense that I just don't get any map with the unit. (Seems kind of like selling a car without the tires.) If I am not able to download the software, what is the purpose for the 24 digit numbers? If I will need this number for something later, I still didn't get one. I sent a weeks worth of emails back and forth to Garmin and they never said I wasn't supposed to get a map with the unit.

I bought a Vista HCx and understood I was supposed to get a 24 bit number that would allow me to get a map for it. As it is it has a very minimal map, mostly yellowish nothing. I have been in contact with 2 Garmin reps for over a week and they still cant tell me what I should have. I just explain it to one, then the other, then back and forth again. It came in a box, with the unit and a waypoint CD, for use on the computer. Is there supposed to be a map on this CD to put on my unit? I went to the garmin site to look for software and see that I have to buy topo map. No problem but as of now I don't think I even have the basics put in. Some units came with a 24 number code that I understand was what you need to download software. I didn't get this number either. What am I supposed to do to get the map on the unit after taking it out of the box? Thanks for any help - Im sure not getting any from Garmin.
