  1. Today I was searching for a cache when I lost satelite reception. It was probably due to dense tree cover and heavy overcast skies. When my GPS found the satelites the cooridnates were way off. I was previeously at N 42* 25.xxx W 88* 55.xxx in Northern Illinois. When the GPS came back online I was at N44* W82* which was somewhere in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Even when I was stopped the GPS kept moving down in northerly coordinates and up in westerly coordinates. On the map mode I was zoomed out to the midwest and a line went from the coordinates to the geocach I had found. When i got to the parking lot I turnewd off my unit and rebooted it I went back to the coordinates I was actually located at. The batteries are fully charged. What was going wrong?
  2. I am an avid kayaker and canoe when I have to. I am also an avid camper. Recently i have discovered geocaching. It gives me soemthing to do when I can't get on the water and can't travel very far. I am an explorer by nature so geocaching is a great thing for me. It also helps me keep my navigation skills sharp. The ones I learned in the National Guard as an infantryman/motarman. I always have enjoyed navigation. Within the last 8 years of my life I rediscovered something else I enjoy; being on, in or near the water. So far I haven't found any cache listings that require access by canoe or kayak. I found one that is on an island in a small lake that can be accessed by any kind of boat. I am thinking of introducing this as a new facet to geocaching. What makes this challenging is observing boating safety while looking for a cache. What makes this excitng is the adventures there may be in locating caches along rivers and lakeshores. I would like to set up a course with a multicache that is accessible by canoe or kayak or small watercraft. We can get creative with geocaching as long as we stay safe and respect the rights of others.
  3. Hello: I am lurking just to learn more about what this geocaching is all about. I have had a lot of land navigation training in the military. I know both the system used by the infantry and the artillery. I never used a GPS when I served even though they were quite common back then. I purchased a Garmin Legend GPS for sea kayaking, have hardly used it for that and in the meantime I discoverd geocaching. I am having trouble "figgerin' out da new fangled contraption" . After using up a couple of batteries I am beginning to guess at how to use it. I at least know enough now to ask questions. I want to lead a canoe/kayak trip doing multiple caches along the river. Has anybody done this before?
