  1. If you're going to drive from Scotland to Wales then I'd certainly suggest a Virtual at Gretna Green - an excellent stopping off point on the journey with a massive load of cheese thrown in as well. Should you be planning on heading to Edinburgh for a day or so (and you should in general) then the One o'clock gun cache is excellent - although it's a bit of a walk up and down hilly bits. Other than that, it's a case of figuring out what you want to see and then what caches are nearby. I enjoyed a spot of walking along Hadrians Wall last summer and found a few caches along the way for example. I'm sure there must be cool stuff near the castles in North Wales as well. Thank you so much! I am really enjoying reading people's posts and getting more ideas for this exciting trip.
  2. It largely depends on what you like to find. A good place to start is the lists of the most favourited caches by type, and we've got challenge caches that tell you (and then if you really push it and get them all you can you can log the challenge too) GC4RXC2 will give you the current Unknown for Dublin, GC4M87N is the Multi list, and the overall top 20 is here. Ireland's Top 10 is here. You can treat these as an easy way of finding what other people have enjoyed finding. Have a look and see what takes your fancy! Recommendations also depend on whether all of your party are cachers, and whether you're all equally fit. We've got plenty of 1/1 park and grabs, but we've also got a fair amount of perilous stuff involving boats and climbing gear. I don't know what you mean by "renting a personal WIFI", but we have pretty good mobile network coverage. Owning a mobile works a bit differently here to the US - we don't need to lock into a contract. Pay As You Go is a prepay system where you get a month's service at a time, no strings. If you have a smartphone, bring it with you and go into any mobile phone store. They'll set you up with a SIM card - a number, basically, and a call and data plan. My current plan costs about Eu20 a month for calls and 3gb of data, but there's plenty of choice. Then at the end of the holiday you remove the card and forget about it. No bills, no rental contract, nothing. And you have a bonus local phone number for any calls you need to make here. You mention Wales and England - as of now, they're still in the EU, and the EU is due to abolish mobile roaming charges in July. It's possible that you might be able to get a Pay As You Go SIM in the first country you visit and then use it for the whole of your trip in all of the countries at no extra charge, but I'm not sure. If you do need a separate UK SIM, then getting one is as simple and cheap as here. If you're planning to drive into Northern Ireland (and I recommend you do - there's fantastic caching up there), let your rental company know. There may be an additional charge on the rental - this varies from one rental company to another. Organise caching events during your stay - we love them! And it's a great way to meet the locals and get local advice. If you're on FB, the Irish geocaching community has a very active group there - check it out! Thank you so much for all of this information! We will be flying into Shannon, driving through Northern Ireland then over to Scotland and Wales and back to finish Ireland. The SIM card idea is great! We were thinking a personal wifi spot - its a mobile wifi that you can use without being connected to a physical address in country would be a good choice because we could connect computers and phones via wifi to run pocket queries, get maps etc. We will look into the SIM card route. If you have suggestions on good places to have events, we would LOVE to host some. It is really cool to meet other cachers.
  3. Thank you! We already have that on our list.
  4. We will be traveling to Ireland in July 2017. We will be there for 2 weeks and have a car. Our plans are to travel the entire island, ferry over to Wales and Scotland. Are there any caches that are a must get? Suggestions for travel? We are thinking about renting a personal WIFI to carry with us as well.

    Souvenir idea

I would like to suggest a new souvenir idea. It would be cool to get souvenirs for milestones. I would suggest this to the correct forum, but I'm not sure to where to place it. Thanks
  6. This keyword removal is terrible. I can't often remember the exact start of a cache name so remembering part of it always helped me to find them. I am not happy about this new starts with feature at all. Plus I just tried to find the Smithsonian tour mentioned in the release notes and can find no record of it since I don't know how it starts.
  7. I didn't see any other file named that way
  8. I think you're misunderstanding the function of the file. It's JUST a text file of your cache notes. Deleting it will NOT remove the "found" status of the caches already on your unit. When you are done uploading your cache notes, you can feel free to delete the geocache_visits.txt file, copy it to your PC, or whatever. It no longer plays a part. I hope so! I just deleted all the old files and I will be bummed if a friend loads a pocket query on my GPS of caches they haven't found and I wind up looking for something I have found before
  9. I have trouble posting only my current field notes. It used to be that the box to not include previous notes was available when you first uploaded. Now it waits to appear until after you have uploaded. I have almost 2000 field notes on my device and this is very frustrating to work with. Can this glitch be worked out without me having to erase my finds file? I am loading them diect from the unit to online
  10. What a fantastic way to end my first advent mission. I brought my presents with me to Mexico because I really needed little fun things to get through. I had to switch the order around a little to accommodate packing. So on my holiday I got: a beautiful piece of polished stone - I have loved rocks since I was a little girl Wooden nickels from a variety of cachers - My friend will be jealous since we always fight over them in caches a cool spinner keychain a pair of hiking boots geo coin And the absolute best - how did you know me so well A purple, cartoon style, baby dragon. I'm posting it to facebook to show all of my friends. It will probably always travel everywhere with me. It will remind me that even when you're down there are little bright spots of joy waiting to be found. If I could figure out how to post a picture I would Thank you so much Fossillady and Mike for giving me a great christmas. Seasons greetings everyone
  11. I have thoroughly enjoyed opening my presents. I wish I had some time for the pics, but hope that my post will be okay. Have had a few deaths and family illness that have come up since the beginning of the mission so these little packages bring me smiles. I have my candy nips - all were enjoyed on a caching mission, good n plenty, yummy bath soap, travel bug, pins (I have collection so these will go beautifully), flower kit, cacher swag, 2 cool coins, bath kit and a new cache. Thanks everyone to all of your hard work River Cacher if you are reading these - take care. I had to make an emergency trip to McCall for a family member and thought of all the fun I had finding your caches along the route previously. My prayers are with you and your family this holiday season
  12. I received my package safe and sound last week. It prompted me to decorate for christmas this year even though I won't be home. Sorry for not posting anything sooner, I didn't know I was supposed to. I've already opened the first 2 gifts, love the coin and the candy is delicious. Just finishing a piece now thanks again to River Cacher for hosting and Fossillady for thinking of me Warm fuzzies to everyone!
  13. Tried the work around for route planning, but it seems to be the same way I have always done it. Can get to the very end and press submit when it goes to a new error page with the icons for Groundspeak and a link back to the main page. any new fixes for this?
  14. Hey I think we have the same provider
  15. GZ= Ground Zero Beacon I'm guessing they are referring to the light Stealth = don't get caught. Lots of muggles in this area and you will look obvious finding this which could cause non cachers to find it and possibly steal it. Hang in there. I recently upped in the ranks to starting to get there. At 100 I was still a newbie, 250 I was a newb, 500 I was new. Just hit 750 and could never have done it without the help of others and the hints on the logs and cache pages. Happy Caching!
  16. I thought the cache machines didn't have multis in them? Also, I see that there is at least one web cam. I'm not sure I have someone to do this for me since I think they will all be caching with me. How do I accomplish this? Nessker
  17. I have set a notification to send me a text message when a new cache is posted in my area. Is there one I can choose that will make it send me the GPS coordinates in the text message and not just the name and that the cache published?
