  1. Thanks for the help. Will try again. It is probably my connection speed or wifi provider since we are on the road.
  2. I have just started hunting benchmarks and logging them. Also have tried to add pictures to my logs but can not seem to get them to load. I keep getting an error msg. I have loaded pictures on some of my caching logs with no problem. Is the benchmark log different from a geocache log as far as loading pictures? I see other benchmark logs with pictures and am wondering if those are done different somehow. It seems like they would be the same as far as loading the picture. Thanks for the help.
  3. If you are talking about the nuvi 500 I will tell you how I do it. With my nuvi 500 I hook it up to my laptop and when the window opens to view what is inside the nuvi I open the one that has all the files on the nuvi. On mine it is always the one at the bottom. Then open the garmin folder and scroll down to geocache visits. I high light that file and then delete it. If you want to delete all the caches in the unit that are loaded on it but not found yet scroll up to GPX file and open it. Then I high light each file in it ( usually 2 or 3 files inside the folder) and delete each one. Then you can reload the unit with more caches. I use GSAK for this and it works great. If you are talking about a different unit then disregard the above. Hope this helps.

  5. I have been trying to update my Oregon 400t and can't seem to get it done. At least it doesn't look like it is done. When I update my Nuvi 500 it tells me when it is done and that the update was ok. I don't get a message like that with the Oregon. I am guessing it is different due to having to manually restart it. At least that's what it says to do at the bottom of the update page with an Oregon. Is there a way or a page I can look at to see if the update was actually completed. I am sure others have been able to update theirs. Looking at the garmin help page gets me nowhere. Thanks
  6. Yep. I have the same setup and it works fine.
  7. You might look at the garmin nuvi's. Some of those units work fine. I use a nuvi 500 and is great. A friend uses I think a 265 and they like it as well. The 500 you add and delete the caches from the gps with a computer which I don't mind. You can also add caches by hand as waypoints if one pops up before you can get to a lap top. The spoken turn by turn thing is great whether you are going somewhere or going caching. The 500 can also be used on foot but I haven't tried that as I use a 400t for that. I mainly use the iphone for the instant notification and logging my finds sometimes. The 500 can be had for under 200 on ebay. Happy caching.
  8. If you open up GSAK one more time, you'll find that under Garmin, it has support for the c530. They'll be loaded as POI. The c530 will certainly be useful for getting you to the general site of a cache, but could be a problem when it comes to actual cache location (accuracy and road snap issues). Thanks. I'll try that. POIs will work.
  9. I have a street pilot 530 and was wondering if it could be set up for loading caches and the cache info like from gsak or a similiar program. I looked at the files in it and it showed a gpx folder which is empty. Tried loading some caches into it but wouldn't take them. I was using the settings I have for a 60csx which is probably the wrong ones. Has anybody else tried this unit? Thanks
  10. I have each of those units. The Nuvi 500 I use in the vehicle and it works great with the pocket queries loaded in it. I don't use it outside as it is not waterproof. I use the iphone with geosphere for logging my field notes. Works very well. And I also heard about the Oregon being hard to see in bright sunlight but that hasn't happened yet. I started using it in Az. I read the forums about how to minimize seeing the screen problems. I followed the directions and installed a white background. Not sure which part that I did took care of it but I have no problem with the brightness issue. I pretty much save my phone for the phone stuff except when I happen to be in an area where I haven't got a pocket query loaded. Then I use the geocaching app for locating the closest caches and enter the coords into the Oregon. The iphone dosen't do well around rocks or moisture even with a good case so I keep it safe. I think if you want to use the iphone for much of anything you will need a subscription with somebody. Happy caching!
  11. I also reccomend you use gsak. With it you can load your pocket queries into your 60csx. Also look up the smart tags. I think there is another name for them but I will put what I use on my 60csx which gives me the smart name for the cache and type of cache and size of container and then some of the hint depending on how long the hint is. When you hit send to gps using gsak, you can set up the format for the gps that you are using. Each gps seems to be different in what you should use to get the info you might want. %smart %typ1%con1-%hint I use the dash in that to separate the hint from the size. Works very well. I recently got an Oregon and really like it since when I load the queries into it, I have just about all the info about the cache. Before I was using a palm with cachemate along with the 60csx and also the iphone with the geocaching app and also geosphere. Kind of a learning curve that keeps changing pretty much for the better.
  12. I must be doing something wrong. Downloaded it 2 times more and each time I tried to open it (in MS) it said it was a bad format and would not open. What is this MS you're referring to (assuming you're trying to open the bg.zip file)? With Windows Vista, you should be able to just double-click on the file to open it and extract the contents. --Larry Microsoft Streets and Tips 2006 is the version I have loaded in my laptop.

  14. The white background you're looking for isn't included by default on the unit. I found the white background I use on the GPSFix Web site. There's a link on the page for downloading a set of background images you can choose from. --Larry I tried downloading from the gpsfix site and when I tried to open/install it, it said it was a bad file so I couldn't use it. Any suggestions. I have Vista business.

  16. I read a post on here awhile back about getting a white back ground on the oregon 400t, I think. But I can't seem to find it on mine. Just got the oregon recently and still learning it. The closest thing to white that I can find is in setup>display>background and select default. I understand the oregon can be hard to see in bright sunlight and a white back ground can help. Is there another setting or is that somehow in the map itself? I haven't been out in the bright sunlight yet but soon!
  17. Finally got this thing figured out. Got an answer back from garmin and they had me reload my garmin plug in. After that the computer could see my nuvi. Then I played with gsak settings and viola it all works. Thanks Sorry about the double post. Couldn't see how to delete it.

  19. Tried doing that with no luck. So sent an email to garmin. Guess will wait and see. Thanks
  20. I recently got a nuvi 500 and am trying to activate the geocaching program in it. I have been able to load caches and the cache info into the nuvi but they only show up as POIs and each time I click on the geocaching program in the nuvi it asks me to activate my membership at geocaching.com. Not sure where to go at this point. The POIs will work but would like to try the caching program like it is on my 60csx. I have looked at the info for the nuvi 500 on this site and got the nuvi button up and running on my gsak program. Have been able to load the caches and the cache info onto a micro sd card as well as the unit and that works but still only as POIs. I am wondering if you have to go to geocaching.com and then download the caches and info from there directly onto the nuvi. I am sure there is a way and it has probably been posted here before but I haven't seen it. Looking for someone to point me in the right direction. Thanks
  21. Thanks for the help. Sounds like the nuvi 500 is a good one to get.
  22. I am thinking about getting a nuvi to keep in the rig to use for driving around and caching in the vehicle. Was wondering if all the units can download cache info or only some of them. I recently saw a friends unit which is an old one that he uses in his rig to get him around the hwys from cache to cache. He is able to download all the cache info into the unit and this gets him close to ground zero. Then he gets out with his 60csx for the ground search. Does anybody have any recommendations? Thanks
  23. Never mind. I figured it out. I went back into gsak and removed the macro that had installed the new icons into my 60csx. Then I made sure the correct icons were checked in the gps for caching and then reinstalled the next batch of caches. Now they show up in the geocaching mode in the gps. Took me awhile.
  24. Several months ago I got from the forums how to load into my 60csx the different cache icons into my 60csx. And at the time I think it also said that you could only remove this feature with the same program. I have since found that the logging process is longer since this disabled some of the geocache features on the gps. My question is how do I go about removing this feature so I can go back to the normal geocache garmin program in the 60csx or can I? I miss being able to just mark a cache as found in the gps when it is found. This was kinda cool seeing the different icons in the gps for the different caches like multis or puzzles and micros. But with the gsak string combo that you can use I don't need that anymore. I would have searched for this in the forums but wasn't sure how to title it. I should have saved the instructions but have misplaced them over time. Thanks
  25. Thanks. Finally got it to work. If your just downloading the KML file you might need to Open it with Google Earth. Drag and drop works.
