  1. If I remember correctly...My previous unit had the blue tooth feature. It was like an FM transmitter signal to your radio. In my area, I couldn't find an FM frequency that was quiet enough. There was always 'noise' and other signals leaking across the frequencies (or however you call that). I couldn't hear anything from it because all the noise. So, I never used it. Good to know. Will watch for that.
  2. Thanks for all the replies. I went with a 1490t. One of the reasons for my getting a new one is I wanted the lane assist and junction view which my 500 doesn't have. Also will give the blue tooth thing a try. I know a lot of posters say to just use your smart phone but I try to save my battery on my iphone for other uses. The geocaching app on it works very well but I seldom use it.
  3. Thanks for the info. I am going to try a new nuvi. Not sure which one for sure yet.
  4. So if you hook up any of the 14xx series to the computer it will show a gpx folder or do you need to make one named gpx?
  5. I know I have seen this in the forums before but can't seem to find them now. I have a nuvi 500 which I use in the vehicle and it works great in the car. It displays the caches correctly and they load thru gsak. I am wondering if some of the newer nuvi models work as well in the car. Some friends have bought newer nuvis and they found the cache symbols did not work and the caches only loaded as POIs. I thought I read in the forums recently that maybe a nuvi 1450 and a nuvi 3760 would work but when I tried to read the information again I couldn't find it. I see the 1450 is listed in gsak but the 3760 isn't. Has anyone had luck these or other newer nuvis? I use an Oregon 400t for walking and it works great for that.
  6. I use to have both the 60cxs and the palm 22 but got tired of having to carry/hold both so I changed to an Oregon 400t and it replaced both of them. I use the palm now as just an address book but my iphone has replaced it also. I know there are newer Oregons out there but my 400t is great.
  7. Like a previous poster said use pocket queries and also use gsak. Works great on my 400t. Can load upto 2000 caches.
  8. I have an Oregon 400t and had the same problems with the sunlight. I followed the advice of a previous poster which was the same as the previous post which helped and also downloaded a white background and installed it in the gps. Works great. The white background thing I got the info for it off the forums here sometime back can't remember which thread it was but sure it is still here somewhere. I still have to hold the gps a certain way sometimes depending on the amount of light but all in all it works great now.
  9. Map updates may not be available for the 300. They aren't for my 400t. You can go to the garmin site to check. They may want to offer you a new map chip for around a hundred bucks but if this road is only a year old, it may not be there. Check with gpsfiledepot for their maps. I use them and they seem to be current. I loaded about 5 of them to an sd card and they work fine. You just need to only select one map at a time for use.
  10. With my nuvi 500, I just hook it to the computer and open the files in it. Mine shows 4 folders inside and one is named garmin. Open that one and look for a file named gpx. Open that one and delete what is inside that. Back out of that and find a file listed something like gpx visits. Delete that and caches found and unfound should be gone. Works for me.
  11. Ok, then it will appear as one map, correct? And it is limited by size? Haven't done that before. I am guessing that I just load map segments that I want from each map that I pick from and load as one map. Will have to try that. It will appear as one map file, but the unit will still show the individual maps within that file. Another trick is that the Nuvi will actually accept TWO files on the SD Card, and up to FOUR files on the internal memory: Internal: GMAPPROM.IMG <- this is your preloaded map file GMAPBMAP.IMG <- this is your basemap file Internal and/or SD Card: GMAPSUPP.IMG <- this is what Mapsource sends GMAPSUP2.IMG <- this is an alternate map that it will also read This is how I'm using my Nuvi. Great info. Thanks

  13. You were right about the name. Now I see the map on the sd card. Seems like I read on here before that you can only put one map on the card with the same name as any new map with the same name will just over write the old one. So am guessing only one map on the card for the nuvi. I like the maps like ones from gpsfile depot as they seem to show better detail most of the time.
  14. I bet this is my problem. Map name. Like I said they work in the Oregon with the name I gave them. But not in the nuvi with the same name I gave. Ok. If I rename them all the same for the nuvi, then each should work when I select that map and of course only one at a time. Thanks, will try it. I am guessing that I will not be able to load so many maps to the sd card for the nuvi, since all maps will have the same name.
  15. When I turn the unit on, the only map that shows up to select or deselect is the one inside the unit, the nuvi. The one that came with it. The maps I have loaded to the sd card don't show at all so I can't even begin to select them. Maybe they need to be loaded differently on the card for the nuvi. But yet they will work find in the Oregon the way they are already named. I just select one at a time in the oregon. Maybe I need to look at how the map is named inside the nuvi and maybe name the maps on the card something similar. Not sure though.
  16. Wondering if someone knows why some maps will work on my oregon 400t and not even show on my nuvi 500. Downloaded most maps from gpsfile depot and they seem to show and work very well on the oregon. They don't even show up on the nuvi. I put them all, 6 total, on an sd card so I could move them back and forth. I wonder if it is because they aren't routable and that is what the nuvi can do. The map that came on the nuvi works very well. Recently the map that came on the oregon showed caches that should have been along a road in a straight line but off of any road. I turned the stock map off and turned on the Arizona depot map it and the caches showed along the road as they should have. Each map is named differently and they show fine in the oregon. Any thoughts?
  17. Not sure if yours is different but on my oregon 400t it doesn't show distance on the cache page but will on the compass or on the map if I have distance to next as one of the fields showing on the screen. I go to setup>map>data fields. Once I have the data fields showing I can touch the ones I want to change and set them to the options they show.
  18. If your gps can use an sd card why not remove the card from the gps put it into the computer and tell mapsource to send the map to the card. That's the way I do it. I remember my old 60csx used an sd card with maps on it. The card I have in my oregon 400t has several maps that I have put on it. Can only use one at a time but then that is all I need. Seems to work great.
  19. I use gsak to load the caches onto my nuvi 500 and can load more than 2000 but I usually limit it to less than 2000 since my oregon 400t has a limit of 2000. When I first got the nuvi I set up a macro for it that I learned about here in the forums but I don't use it now since gsak seems to work very well.
  20. When I had my 60csx I found in the forums what I think was called gsak string. It had to do with changing the way your caches names and descriptions loaded onto the gps. It wouldn't alway give the full hint but with most hints you could get most of it. When I hit send to gps in gsak on the setup page for my 60 (I had it set up for 3 different gps units so 3 different settings) it would show under waypoint name %smart name (I think, doing this from memory) and under waypoint description I put %typ1%con1-%hint That was my gsak string for that unit. With that setting I got the type of cache, type of container and then a dash and the hint. Find in gsak (I think) the gsak string and then you can make your own settings. Worked very well.
  21. What input file are you trying to feed into the program? You say that you're getting 'the same information as the input file', which I'm a little confused about, since the input filetype should be a datasheet, which GSAK can't handle at all. Cheers, -Mike. Hey thanks. I downloaded a pocket query of benchmarks and pointed the conversion page at it and it showed as there like your example. It also showed that it would go back to that file as a gpx. When I hit process it immediately showed as done with no files processed. But there was a file back where it should have been with the gpx ending which I dragged to gsak and it loaded as usual like before and without the added info. When I down load the .loc files they associate with gsak on my laptop. I am wondering if I should change that association to another type. I am sure one of my settings is wrong just not sure which. Your program seems to be just as shown on the web so it must be one of my settings.
  22. Yes, use NGS»GPX. The link to v2 is right below the "NGS»GPX v3" title. Thanks. Got this to download and install and now just working on the settings. Having trouble with the output part. It doesn't show that it processed a file. When I move what looks like the finished file to gsak it shows up as the same as before without the added info. I either have my settings wrong or I am pointing at the wrong file.
  23. Am wondering if the bmgpx zip file is compatible with vista. I can't seem to get the zip file to install on my laptop. What is the best to open this file with. I tried to drag it into gsak and that didn't seem to do anything. When I try to open it on my laptop it uses internet explorer and it gets stuck. It keeps opening more and more windows untill I finally shut it down and restart the laptop. I would like to get the full info on a BM when I load it onto my gps like regular caches. Is there a newer easier way?
  24. I finally figured out my problem. My pictures were too big. Not big in size but too big in pixels. Each of my pics were 3,000 X 4,000 in pixels. When I downsized them using the windows snipping tool they loaded easily. I was using a new camera and didn't realize the new pics were actually larger. Using the snipping tool, even if the actually picture looked the same size it was less in the amount of pixels.
  25. I was having that same problem recently then realized it was the number of pixels in the photo. At least I think it was the pixels. Anyway my size was 3,000 x 4,000 on each and every picture I took. Great photos. Then I started using the windows snipping tool on the photos I wanted to load. I snip the part of the pic I want and then save it. Then it loads easily.
