  1. Free at last. Free at last. Since going paperless I am free at last!
  2. I had this happen a long time ago and Delorme customer support walked me through. Well it happens Friday night after Delorme has closed for the weekend and I am going to Alaska and wanted to cache. Does anyone know how to get it to clear and turn on? I have taken the batter out. Pressed on the start button. Pressed every button I can thing of. And still it will not power on. If this did not happen once before I would assume it is fried but last time there was a reset sequence that brought it back to life. Thanks for the help.
  3. I've had 3 and all have had the same issue with reception. I can see getting 1 lemon unit, but 3? I have 2 PN40s and both hold locks extremely well except in one state park's rocky canyon in which I was never closer than 100 ft accuracy. TOOK FOREVER to find that cache. I never worry about tree/cloud cover. I just cache and it hasn't failed me except for that one dad blamed canyon. All in all I love it but I have not had a colorado to compare against so I really cannot say which I would like better. My battery life seems to be 5 hours (I like a brighter screen) but I have 3 sets of rechargables and thus other than the time to swap I have no issues.
  4. If you are a Sunday cacher and will do New Jersey caches as well as NY then maybe we can work things out. Also there is a group of cachers that meet every 3rd Tuesday in Edison New Jersey at Fuddruckers.
  5. I had my 4th run in today. I was circling GZ which was near a fence and some electrical boxes. A park ranger pull up and asks me politely what utility company I am with. Now I know good well that he knows I do not work for a utility company as I have no uniform, muddy jeans and an old thorn torn leather jacket. Luckily I had just found the cache and walk up and told him I was geocaching, which he had heard of but did not know what it was. So for the next 10 min, I got to show him a cache, logbook, gps, other caches in the park I was going to go after, where to by a gps as he wants to now join the sport. He bikes the Delaware canal system and wants to find caches along his route. I have finally figured out how to solve the police/ranger problem. Convert them all into cachers!
  6. I went out today. Got 17. DNF a bunch because of snow. Found a 20 foot pink dinosaur at one cache. Jim Gary's Playground
  7. I use GSAK which allows me to filter exactly what caches I want and send as many as my GPSr will hold in one swoop.
  8. Happened to me on GSAK. When you send to the PN the waypoint name MUST be %Code. If not then the field notes will never upload properly. Once it did this the notes uploaded. PS my waypoint description is %Name/%DateLF/%Code.
  9. Yeah it works for Geocaching (Sortof). I loaded 994 not found geocaches to my PN40 using GSAK and saved it to a file called NotFound. I then loaded 604 Found geocaches and named it Found. I can load either set at will. My NotFound file shows all 994 perfectly. However the Found file had 89 NotFound and 515 found. For some reason, it is switching the found/not found status but it is loading all my caches. So if you do not mind not trusting the status, all caches were saved. I can now save 1000's of caches on my SD card!
  10. I am so jealous. I paid 335 for mine with maps. I love my 40! I hate the battery life. Get the rechargeable power pack. You cannot live without it on the 40 unless you own a battery company. With the rechargeable pack I do not spend a fortune on batteries. In fact I am getting a second pack for Christmas so I can go longer than 7 hours.
  11. So if I eat Wheaties I find more caches? Let me at em! I treat DNFs as part of my experience caching and to let others know if there may be a problem. Not logging to me does not let the CO know I was interesting in finding, does not let them know if maybe there is a problem, does not let others know if there is an issue or why I gave up the hunt. The other day I was at a cache which was in a pine tree with extremely sharp prickly spines. It was not so much that I could'nt find it but if I wanted to look. Those looking after me would at least know what to expect before driving a distance and see that protective clothing would make for a more enjoyable experience.
  12. It is the same thing except for all that magic, killing, raiding parties, monsters, mauling, dying and resurrecting stuff. All in all its pretty close.
  13. As of when I wrote this post the gc home page says "There are 940,806 active caches worldwide. In the last 7 days, there have been 627,511 new logs written by 83,737 account holders." I have been reading these forums for over 2 years. I basically see the same set of posters making the majority of the posts. If all 83,737 were reading and posting I doubt that anyone would be able to keep up with the number of topics. Also if you go to the members list and scroll through, the vast majority have 0 posts. So as I see it, only those people who like to talk about their experiences as well as cache actually post on these forums while the vast majority seem to be blissfully unaware the forums even exist probably because they are too busy caching.
  14. No I believe it will be something along the line of "My uncle in Nigeria just left me a 1,000 of geocoins to place in my caches but is unable to pay the tax to get them out of country. Should you be willing to help me, I will give you half of the geocoins for helping me help my uncle".
  15. I stop with the needle in a haystack hides. They bore me. I stop when I come to a cache hidden in an area littered with trash. I stop when I find I have to swim to get to a cache, or navigate a mud bath. I stop but I log a DNF if I actually start to search. Granted, the search may be only a five minute deal, but if I search I log it. Many times I arrive at GZ and see that this is not a cache I am willing to spend time on so I do not start a search but walk away. Those are the caches where I do not log a DNF. All of the above reasons for me not fun but I know many who enjoy those. The nice thing is you can tailor what you look for. I am one who actually happens to enjoy micros because of the difficulty of the hunt. Many hate micros. I enjoy looking for the really hard hides. I get a lot of DNFs that way as I usually get bored after 30-45 minutes, but I come back over and over to vanquish my nemesis. So far I am still not good enough a cacher to find the 4 and 5 difficulties but it is still fun to look.
  16. With the description given, couldn't the local reviewer verify its existence and then have it reinstated and apology given? Personally I would love to tackle a hard cache like this, probably would not find it, but love the hunt.
  17. Paperless for about 300 look at the Delorme PN40. I love mine!
  18. The pages on the forums do not go back very far.
  19. If you do, bring comic books to swap. The cache is great for comic collectors.
