  1. Got my unit back today - well, not the original - they sent me a new one, no quibbles, no fuss. This is the sort of support I like. Well Done Garmin
  2. Well, I've ruled out the memory card and had wonderful response from Garmin. If they are watching, well done. Very happy customer here. I'm to return my unit for checking/replacing too.
  3. I had a thought a couple of days ago. I have not tried using my unit without the memory card and so I don't know if it locks up under that circumstance. It'll be nuisance to try as it makes the unit less knowledgable... My theory being that the unit gets garbled map data which causes the lock up. So I removed the card and gave the contacts a good clean. I know gold contacts are supposed to be wonderful, but that's not the experience I've had with memory on pcs. Now so far my Vista hasn't locked up again. If it does I shall have to try sans Sandisk*.
  4. That's a mirror image of my units functionality. Looks like a trip to the local post office is on the cards - as soon as I can find the POI
  5. I've never seen the cold start problem tho' I've not enjoyed the conditions required. However I have got problems with my unit locking up. Garmin have suggested doing a reset, but the system locked whilst it was subsequently reacquiring satellite data. I'm not convinced that the reset resets everything as some user data stayed put and it only took a couple of minutes to switch from the satellite screen to the map... I have had a good look through the forums and not seen anyone else wit this issue but there has been talk last year about problems resulting from poor memory card contact but not with the HCx. Typically this was the card somehow being jolted out of the locked in position. I have also wondered if there's an issue with the maps loaded and I'm about to have separate cards for Topo and City Nav to se what happens. I'd be interested in discovering a harder reset than Page + Enter + Power On I understand that Page + Enter + Find + Power On just bypasses the confirmation dialogue. I'd expect the power up message to reset if the system had a real reset everything option... Given that the Cold Start issue seems to be fixed (tho' it sounds like they've wangled it by getting the unit to auto start twice should this be a new thread?
  6. I'm sure I saw the answer to this on the forum, but I've just searched back to last October... The icon appears in the bottom left corner of the display and I suspect it indicated the unit is or wants to update satellite information. I can't get it to appear at will or I'd post an example. I'm interested in it's function because I have a problem with my unit (locks up regularly) for which Garmin have suggested a reset. I would have expected a full reset to remove my startup greeting and cause the myster icon to appear - if it represents "getting satellite data" So, please, what does the image mean?
  7. A change to the Search page (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/) might help. The link to the rules (which is sort of broken but see below) is right at the bottom of the page, completely off screen. I appreciate that if it was at the top, once you know the rules, the link and text get in the way of searching. With current HTML methods, it'd be simple to move its position from the top for an Advanced user, or for <insert BIG HINT here> paid up members. The rules link says this It could, given the advanced toggle system I suggest, include the basic rules - in plain English!! - at the top for new, or unpaid-up people In any case, linking to a "this page has moved" isn't helping and WORST of all is the fact that the page, should you have bothered with two links and a huge amount of reading says this: Couldn't that say something like Check the search instructions for yourselves here.
  8. Sadly the Google integration appears to require the GSAK website. I'm getting the site unavailable message. I'm guessing it's ths feayture that has caused the problem. TOP
  9. S. Paul, I think you said it in your title's first three words. I'm very new at this (2nd week) and today I took my first travel bug. BUT I had taken the trouble to find out about Geocaching and it's associated 'features' so there's no concept of hanging on to the wee beastie. I think it's quite exciting to become part of the chain and to read about it's travels to date. Jazz666, I don't think there's any introductory email - or if there is, I misfiled it - I get inundated with spam unfortunately
  10. I've spotted the same problem (similar discrepancy too) with my Vista HCx, bought about a month ago. I wondered about the accuracy of my car's speedo and tyre pressures and such but haven't had the opportunity to check yet. Makes using it as a speed trap warning a bit silly <g> chris
