I hike and backpack frequently on state game lands. You rarely see anybody out patrolling,so likely one could get away without paying the proposed fee. My home city,Philadelphia, tried imposing a yearly permit for equestrians and bikers in Fairmount park a few years back and it never went anywhere.

Moratorium on placing new caches in NJ state parks?
jpamusher replied to 4wheelin_fool's topic in Northeast
Just an idea that would somewhat offset the reduction in geocaches that will result. Perhaps Groundspeak should allow logging benchmarks as part of your find total---a smiley for it. This new policy probably wouldn`t affect benchmarks. I`ve never done benchmarking yet. Also,I recently logged a cache in the Wharton State Forest that had (unknown to me when I made the find)been archived the day before and it still showed on my page as a find. I suspect many cachers will just archive their caches and not actually remove them. I can`t see too many park personel scouring the state forests just to remove archived caches, thus they will still actually be there and you could hunt them down and log them. I will try anyway! -
Moratorium on placing new caches in NJ state parks?
jpamusher replied to 4wheelin_fool's topic in Northeast
I just logged an archived cache a few days ago along the Batona trail near Rt 563. In my opinion, the net effect of this new policy will be a HUGE reduction of geocaches in the area! I have 4 caches hidden in NJ and so far have recieved no e mails telling me to remove or modify them. People are responsible for their own safety,we don`t need the government to hold our hands and guide us! I fear that this is the beginning of the end of geocaching as more states, municipalities, etc impose restrictions. Many cachers won`t want to be bothered and will abandon the sport! In light of this,I may not renew my premium membership this year. -
I`m posting this topic here as it seems the only appropriate spot in the forums. I was hiking recently at Island Beach State Park in NJ and tried to find a cache at co ordinates N39 46.644 W074 06.889(cache is archived but I had found it back in 09 and just wanted to visit the unique location again). Anyway, when I got home I was curious what the map location would be if I kept the cache coordinates the same but simply changed N to S. I did this and my GPS shows a point on the W coast of Argentina. Shouldn`t the point be on the E coast somewhere on a line directly south from NJ?

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing trouble viewing or uploading images. I uploaded photos for a recent log and get the message "can`t view content" ???

How is it legal to claim... say 900 caches in one day?
jpamusher replied to The_Wagners's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm not sure what the point of calling someone a cheeseball is. Obviously some cachers enjoy doing these powertrail. Perhaps they see it a challenge to find 900 caches in 24 hours. It's certainly not easy to do even with powertrails. But it is possible. Other geocachers might enjoy finding a single cache that requires an overnight backpacking trip and extreme mountaineering abilities. I think everyone is trying for find ways of enjoying geocaching that fit their personalities. Some are finding challenges that test their particular abilities and preferences. I have to agree. Geocaching is a personal hobby in some ways. I like to find caches as part of a longer hike and seldom drive somewhere just to find a cache. If people enjoy other types of caching, good for them! -
Thanks Avenois, just read the latest posts and this clears up the mystery!

I don`t mind somebody trying to find my archived cache, just wondered why the logs don`t show up on the page. I didn`t delete them.

I have 1 cache,Tyler SPCA,that is archived. Recently a few cachers have taken the time to find it anyway and I have been notified via e mail that they have done so. They referred to this as Nikoning,a term that I am not familiar with? Their logs do not appear on the archived cache page however. What gives? Can you still log a smiley for a cache that has been archived?

Just did a little research for the fun of it,and this appears to be the closest cache to Osama`s hideout. It is about 32 miles away. closest cache to osama

Good point! I have always wanted to place a cache in the Grand Canyon. I could use this site for that cache and also use geocaching.com for most other caching! Uh.... no. National Parks do not allow geocaches (in lower-case). It isn't that Groundspeak does not allow it... the Federal Government doesn't allow it. The difference is that Groundspeak has reviewers to intervene before the cache gets published. I assume you posted in jest... but I felt that a serious answer was in order anyway. OK I thought it was just a Groundspeak prohibition but if the Federal Government doesn`t allow it,then there`s no point in placing the cache.

While browsing thru my latest issue of Backpacker magazine,I came across an ad for a site called opencaching.com It is another website for logging geocaches and is run by Garmin. I`m just wondering what the point is of having another geocaching site since you can`t view any of the caches logged on geocaching.com here and can`t track any travel bugs? It would seem that one universal site such as geocaching.com is all that is needed.

This is enlightening! Thanks all for the replys,I enjoyed checking out those cache pages!

Can people delete my logs if I don't sign them?
jpamusher replied to Coldgears's topic in General geocaching topics
For me,it all comes down to honesty and having to live with myself. I will claim a find and log it online if I couldn`t sign the physical log due to not having a pen. I know that I found it and that is enough for me. I would get no satisfaction out of claiming a find where I didn`t really find the cache. I own 6 caches and if someone logs a find online,I will accept that they are being honest about it. -
Logging "Find" and did not sign log
jpamusher replied to Take A Hike!'s topic in General geocaching topics
I think it all comes down to honesty. I have logged caches online where I haven`t been able to sign the physical log due to forgetting a pen. If I found the cache, then I found it and will claim it as a find. I would get no satisfaction of lying and claiming a find where I didn`t actually find the cache. -
If a cache has been moved, then you have to search to find it again,so it qualifies as a new find as far as I am concerned! To each their own,but I have no problem in logging a new find in this situation!

This may be a difficult topic to respond to,but I wonder if there are any caches out there that have logged far more DNF`s than smileys and perhaps some that have NEVER BEEN FOUND!
-
Most caches that I come across nowadays are filled with junk, plastic figurines, old tickets, etc. I`d be glad to find money anyday! I really don`t cache for swag anyway,it`s more the challenge of just finding the cache. If Bill Gates were to place a cache and put $10,000 in it,well that would be a different story!!

That is really interesting,Isonzo Karst! I just wonder if a gps would work in orbit since the gps satellites pinpoint a location on the surface of the earth. I am going to try and look it up!

I was reviewing the geocache requirements prior to placing a new cache and came across this: "Geocaches are allowed in space, other planets and spacecraft." This is actually published in the official guidelines! I was just wondering why this is included as 1 the only way to place a geocache on say Mars would be via an unmanned probe and thus nobody could get there to find it 2 there are no gps satellites in orbit around Mars,so a gps wouldn`t work there anyway!
-
I guess that I will just place it another cache out west then. Even if I did leave it under some rocks along the Tonto trail,I don`t know how I would log that it was there waiting to be found.

I am going to be hiking in the Grand Canyon in a few weeks and was thinking of hiding a geocoin that I recently retrieved along a trail in the Canyon. I know that geocaches are not permitted in National Parks but this wouldn`t really be like placing a cache there and it would be gone once another cacher hiked by and retrieved it. Would this be acceptable or should geocoins only be placed in other caches?
