  1. was just looking for the same unit at wally world.com $ 228.88. thinking bout upgrading to something with hcx with the tree cover coming in soon ( well soon i hope ) right now got 15 inches of the white stuff on the lawn. but going out caching tomorrow, gotta get out of the house

  2. I haven't run in to the Windows XP ME problem and I have it on both the laptop and desktop computers.

I'm curious - when you open up a cache on your PDA, what does it say in the upper right corner? If it says "description" you will not have logs and hints. If you change it to "overview" you get the whole enchilada.

I like to download every thing to the SD card.

I clear all the old caches out of cachemate and I go to "delete" on the Palm to remove the files I don't need any more from the card. It just cuts out some of the clutter and makes the sync go smoother. But that's just me.

    Good luck.

i don't have the SD card. i just bought this off of ebay to go paperless and didn't know if i needed the card features. thanks for the info on "overview" that is the whole enchilada. this is the first time i've used a pda so guess i'll just have to play around with it and with help from people on the forums i'll be good to go. any idea on how long the battery in these things last ? it is an older model and was just wondering if it would be in my best interest to invest in a new battery. seen them on the web for 15-25 bucks.

  3. I'm not sure exactly how the files are "merged." I keep adding PQs to my GSAK database, so any additional Past Logs are in the .pdb file that is Exported.

well duh ! ( smacks forehead ) guess since thats what i'm doing is adding to GSAK then exporting to the palm, they would be up to date.... i better recheck, might have a few blonde straglers in all that grey.. thanks...........

  4. Sometimes I Delete all the files in the "Not Found" folder in Cachemate, sometimes not. Cachemate adds to the caches in the list and doesn't double them up, unless you forget to designate the same folder (Not Found) you used the last time and use the Default (Unfiled). :D

i think when it downloaded on to the palm it said something about the files were 'merged".... my question is if i do a pq say tomorrow will it basically just update the logs ? if new logs have been added since my last pq

  5. A fellow local cacher emailed me and asked for some help with CM, I put together a CM for dummies :D step by step process....he emailed me back and said it worked. Here's a copy.....

I'll due my best and walk you through how I do it.

It may look complicated, but its not

First I run a paocket query through GC.Com

2nd I open the zipped file and then copy one of the two files that are in the zipped file (do not copy the file that has "-wpts" at the end, copy the other one.

3rd I paste the copied file on the desktop (or anywhere you can easily find it)

4th I open CMConvert program (available at smittyware.com)

5th (in CMConvert program) Click on load file in upper left hand corner

6th locate the file that you pasted in step 3 and select it ( A file import options window will pop up, I check all boxes)

7th click ok in lower left-hand of pop up ( a confirmation window will pop up informing you of how many waypoints have been loaded.

8th click ok in new pop-up (you should now see all the waypoints, names, items, difficulty,etc...

9th on the CMConverter task bar, click the 4th icon from the left, it is a dark check mark next to an "A" (right below the view tab)---You will notice that all the cache fields turn to a solid blue as they have just been selected to be loaded to your pda

10th click the File tab and choose second option "Export PDB..."---a save as window will pop up

11th type in the name that you want to call the file I use the same name that is used for my pocket query

12th click save--a verification window will pop up stating how many waypoints were converted.

13th click OK --a new pop up will appear stating where the convert file was written to

14th click ok -- a new window will pop up asking you which palm user id you want files sent to at next hotsync>>>

15th choose the name of your palm (most likely theres only one choice)

16th click ok-- a confrimation window will pop up stating at next hotsync files will be transferred

    17th click ok

Now Go get that Palm, (DON'T HOTSYNC YET) turn it on open cache mate if there are any waypoints there, go to where you they are all listed (don't be on an individual cache page) click record in upper left hand corner>>>then click delete records, it wil then ask for a confirmation>>>choose yes>>>exit cachemate>>>now you can HotSync.

After HotSync is done, open cachmate, your new waypoints are waiting to be created, click "ok">>>and that's it your done. Play around with it theres tons of stuff on there that MobiBook didn't have.

thanks for all the help guys/gals. another related question then: when i do pq's, do i need to delete the files on the palm or when i hot sync after doing the pq's will it just update the info, you know the last 5 logs or whatever i have set up?

  6. My etrex legend only has a serial cable to hook up to the comp. and ofcourse my comp. doesnt have a serial port. I bought an adapter from best buy, its a dynex dx-ubdb9 serial to usb controller. I go on their web site and download their drivers but their files dont have a execute file and I cant get them to run. Because I cant run these drivers for the controller it prevents me from downloading the drivers for my etrex legend. Is there anyone who can help me?

better check the package good, i bought the same adapter for my etrex legend and had the same problem. got to looking for a solution and finnaly discovered the install cd in the package behind the cardboard piece, once i found that and installed it havn't had a problem. i did get a laugh out of it because i was sure pissed when i couldn't get it to work.

  7. ok, this is all new to me and i'm not that computer savvy so please be patient. i wanted to go paperless so heres what i have:

Etrex Legend and Palm Tungsten E

Dell Dimesion C521 Windows XP Media Edition

have GSAK on computer, Cachemate on palm

i did a PQ, have that in GSAK, sent that to Cachemate

so far so good i thought

in Cachmate, none of the hints and logs are there

There was a pop up screen that came up something about WinXP and these types of files and also read in the forums about people having problems with "XP Media Edition"

Questions: 1) Is WinXP my problem ?

    2) How can i get the logs/hints to show in Cachmate ?

    3) Is it a filter i just didn't set up or get checked ?

    4) Would it make difference to send the file to the SD card and if so would Cachemate be able to read it that way ?

thanks in advance, i know someone will have the answers
