  1. I have one of the old blue Etrex Legends. How do I go about adding the maps from open street maps? Do I need mapsource or something like that?
  2. After geocaching this past weekend and my old Etrex not working well I'm looking to upgrade to the two units listed in the title. Which would be best for mainly geocaching? Thanks everyone
  3. sorry, forgot to mention, yes its the CD.
  4. a friend gave me an old Nuvi 200. He also is going to give me a copy of North America City Navigator 2011 to put on it. This was put on a different unit of his, will it work on the Nuvi 200 I have? If so, how do I install it? This is my first auto gps. Thanks.
  5. this would only be temporary as I drive my wife's car when shes home. I only would use this for short jaunts around town. By the way, for those of you who have a Dodge Caravan, Chrysler or Plymouth mini van from about 1996 to 2000, this is a common problem. The gauges all go dead but can be brought back to life with a slap on the dashboard(commonly called slapdash), after a while though this will not work at all. It happens that some cracked soldered joints is the problem on the back of the cluster. In the next few days I'll grab the soldering gun and go at it. There are some great vids on youtube that can guide you through the whole process to fix this issue. Thanks again.
  6. I have an old Garmin Etrex Legend. It has been a great unit for geocaching and about everything else I've used it for. Recently the speedometer, temp gauge, and fuel gauge on my van stopped working. At the moment I'm unemployed and have not been able to find a job. A few years back I bought a Ram mount for my Etrex that I could keep in my van. My question is, for the time being, could I use the GPS as a speedo with reasonable accuracy? The shop is wanting around $500 to fix the gauge issues and I just simply cannot afford it. Can I expect + or - 5mph accuracy? Thanks.
  7. My company just got two of these refurbed untis for use on a project. We are going to mount them on tractors which will be mowing a utility right of way. We didnt need pinpoint accuracy which is why we didnt mount the Trimble Geo XH's. I've played with this PN-20 for only an hour or so and its really sweet infact I'm taking it home this weekend to dink with it some more, do a few caches too. Anyways, I just wanted to say this thing is sweet and I cant wait for the PN-40 to come out as I may get one to replace my Garmin Etrex Legend.
  8. exactly which Ram mount would I get for what I'm using it for? I dont want the one that holds the gps in a vertical position.
  9. will this fit on an old etrex legend with only 8mb of memory?
  10. I'm looking for a mount so I can put my eTrex Legend on my mountain bike. I wouldn't be doing anything too crazy since I will have my son along in his bike trailer and will be on a paved bike path so there wont be alot of jarring blows or vibrations. I do want something though that will hold my gps securely. Which type of mount would be better, the Garmin mount or Ram mount? Thanks.
  11. might there be any maps of Ohio available anytime soon? Preferably small enough to fit on one of the black and white eTrex Legends (8MB) memory
  12. I have 1' and 6" resolution aerials in Mr. Sid format...does that mean with this XMap 5.2 Pro I could load them on my PN-20?
  13. I have an Etrex Legend that I use for geocaching. I would like to have alittle more detail than just the base map that comes with it but due to it only having 8MB of memory I dont know what to put on it. I would prefer something with street details on it, would this be Metroguide? Or does Metroguide just give you POI's? Since I work in GIS if I need any topos I can just print them using the software I have but again I'd like streets details. What can I get to put on my legend with the little bit of memory it has?
  14. thats why I dont want to buy the additional maps because of the memory my legend has and the expense. I already have this mapping program which lets me transfer to and from my gps tracks, routes, and waypoints plus I can plot out topos or turn on the 1m aerials...I sometimes export the waypoints and such as shapefiles and bring them into ArcMap where I can lay them on 1ft or 6 inch color aerials. What format are the maps which are loaded onto the gps from mapsource? .img files?
  15. I have a Garmin Etrex Legend...the blue one. I'm wondering, how can I load some maps in it without using any map source programs? I work alot in GIS and use many mapping programs such as ArcView, Terrain Navigator, etc. Is it possible to load maps in using Terrain Navigator? I know I can send and receive waypoints, tracks and routes to and from Terrain Navigator but what about maps? Thanks.
  16. I am looking for a Germin Etrex Venture, the original green one. I cant afford alot so anything up to $50 would be fine. Thanks.
  17. I was wondering. I've been using my legend for a while now to geocache. I always leave the lock on roads turned on. Would I be better to turn off lock on roads when geocaching?
  18. how would I turn off the accuracy ring on a germin legend? I cant find it in the manual
  19. actually I do live in Ohio...good guess Anyways, thanks for the info. I mainly use the legend for geocaching but with maps loaded can I navigate with it? Will it give me all street names in certain cities? I'm thinking about keeping the legend for a backup and either getting a 60CSX or Vista HCX.
  20. I have a question about the blue legend and maps. I got one of these for Christmas. It has 8MB of memory. How many maps can I really put on it? I saw a friends map source and for one little part of Ohio it was like 16MB. Also, can the basemaps be updated on these?
  21. between the Garmin Street Pilot 330 or the Nuvi 200 which would be the better choice? Thanks.
  22. does the Legend HCX have the odometer bug like the Vista HCX?
  23. I have the funds for a new gps unit now. I'm between the Vista HCX or the GpsMap60 CSX and cannot make up my mind. Please tell me which to get. I see the vista hcx has that bug concerning the odometer...is that big enugh to make the 60 CSX the better choice? Thanks.
  24. Mike, I feel for you as something similar happened to me a few months ago. Stopped for lunch only to come out and find the truck had been broken into and gps along with several other things stolen. Insurance would not replace mine either. I did get a new unit though last month. I saw in a post last month maybe that some people sent a person a few new gps untis. I cant send mine since I use it at work too but I could throw in $20 or so if several people would like to take up a collection or if someone can just send you a unit be it new or used. What does everyone think? I mean heck its Christmas time.
