  1. Hey guys, Has there been traction on the creation of the sandbox server? Initially announced August of 2004, I haven't seen anything to indicate that such a server has been created, or whether the initiative to create the server has since died. Could we please get clarification from TPTB? In the absence of information, people tend to make stuff up. I'd rather just skip to the accurate information. Thanks for your candor, Marc (The Nomad)
  2. I disagree whole heartedly that they suck. I think they're really sweet, and highly functional - a very nice improvement indeed. However, would it be possible for there to be a user preference that allows old-style over new style? Here's why - I use a Palm Treo 650 to look up cache pages in the field. Yes, I know that there's a WAP interface, but I prefer to use the full-out browser (for the images, and other features I get in the full-out browser). Unfortunately, once the new maps came in, every cache page I load ends up popping a javascript error saying that the Google maps aren't supported in my browser. It's not a huge thing I suppose, but it would be nice if I could have a user preference to toggle to default to old-style maps. Thanks for the continuous improvements to the website however. Please keep up the good work!
  3. Getting an Out of Memory exception on the server, trying to log in, or trying to look up a cache. Just thought you should know. Take care, The Nomad
  4. FWIW, I have two daily PQ's that I haven't been receiving: Orlando Unfound was last run on 7/11/2005 at 11:48:12 PM Melbourne was last run on 7/13/2005 at 5:17:52 Based on the thread, I've throttled it back to 5 days a week instead of daily. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Since they haven't been generated in several days, and since I know there are new caches in my area, I guess I need to create a new one that does what my old one does...
  5. One of the best night-caches I ever did required some serious leaps of faith. The entire cache required light-bushwacking through thick trees (i.e. no trails). But, you couldn't see one reflector from another reflector, unless a turn was involved. So, you found a reflector, marked a waypoint, and struck off in the same direction (in one case for 200+ feet) before you'd come across the next reflector. If there was a turn, then you'd find two reflectors, and standing there, you could shine your flashlight around until you spotted the next "general direction". You were "encouraged" to mark a waypoint at each reflector in case you couldn't find the next one in line so you could go back and try again. It was quite cool, and required much more GPSr use than the typical night-cache. The final stage had three reflectors, and you were told that the cache would be within (something like) 35' of those 3 reflectors.
  6. LOL - Funny - my math isn't working properly this evening. Nice catch.
  7. Hey all - I think my approver (Crow T Robot) has the quickest time for approval. Can anyone beat this? My "Listing Submitted" e-mail came in at 9:25pm. My "Listing Published" e-mail came in at 10:08pm. I've extolled the virtues of our local volunteer approver before, but I've never had such a quick approval. Less than 30 minutes... Crow T Robot rules!
  8. Woo hoo!!! Thanks for the upgrades. Oh yeah - AFAIC, if you need to take the servers offline every night for two weeks - it's worth it if the site performance noticably improves. Good luck to all!
  9. Chiming in here - Crow T Robot (our approver) has always been respectful, even when I placed caches in inappropriate places. Doh! Never seen a rude comment, e-mail or anything negative out of him. That's my $0.02 anyway.
  10. Looking good to me. Closing the thread. Thanks for the quick response.

    Strange

Problem is now resolved. It just took a little time to get fixed.

    Strange

Another site problem here - I'm showing a few new approved caches on my list, but when I try to view them, I get a message saying that I can't view them until they're approved. After 5 minutes, there's still a problem. Seems to be another latency issue.
  14. I recently had my most expensive DNF ($877.00) due to injury. Careful to the squeamish - graphic pictures in log... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...f1-506475a589a4
  15. FWIW, the issue cleared up soon after I posted the problem. No action from anyone is necessary - I'm just advising the folks running the site that there is some kind of latency that may have other, more insidious implications in other areas.
  16. Hi there, My cache (GCKDF5) seems to be somewhere in limbo. On my owned-cache list, I see that it's available and active. When I view the cache page, it states that the cache is currently unavailable. I've cleared my browser cache (although I'm certain it has nothing to do with my browser caching the page) with no effect. I've called it up on another computer, and it shows available. This seems due to some kind of latency issue between two machines where one machine is reporting it properly, and the other machine isn't. Just thought you should know... Marc (The Nomad)
  17. I checked on the finds and logs on my caches lately, and I've not received any find logs since yesterday. Today, I've had four of my caches found, and have had a total of nine logs on my caches that I haven't received e-mails for. Is it broke? It seems like it...
  18. I agree here. I had someone log my cache about 2 hours ago, and had a couple of notes on another cache. I have yet to receive any notification on any of 'em. This is a first for me.
  19. Well, in fairness, scroll-down 28 posts, and then use a trial-and-error algorithm to search each of the referenced glossary sites to find the one that mentioned the search term I was looking for. I think the topic of this post was pretty much on mark. I had/have a reasonable search criteria, but am unable to coax the search engine to produce valid/usable results. For those that are content with: a) Go to forum you've never been to because you're not new to geocaching. Load the FAQ page. c) Scroll down 28 posts. d) Open each of the four glossary/term pages to see if it contains the information desired. Then great - the system is working fine for you. For those that think that searching the forum in one place for meaningful results should be possible - well, that's what this thread is about.
  20. Oh yeah, after I get to the section of meanings and acronyms, I have to open the Geocaching.com Glossary (not there), the Markwell's Personal Website (not there), the NeoGeologisms page (not there), and finally the GeoLex, the Lexicon of Geocaching where it is. Wow. Seems like I'm the search engine.
  21. Taking your lead, I went to: This link and searched for DPM. I then followed that up, and went to the GC knowledge base, and searched for DPM. Nada. I get this: ------- Your search - DPM - did not match any answers in our knowledge base. Please change your search terms and try again. Back to Browse ------- I'm not sure how doing something different than what I suggested is "following my lead". Let's see, I'm trying to figure out about the geocaching term DPM. In the pinned topic, less than halfway down the very first page, I find this post. It says, in great big bold letters, all the better to be seen, Meanings of Acronyms and Terms Used in Geocaching. Wow! I wonder if that's something I should read? Let's see. I'm looking for the meaning of the term DPM. And this post has links to where the meaning of geocaching terms and acronyms can be found. Gee, I wonder if those links could be usefull. Maybe. But instead of clicking on any of them, I'll just go post another message about how I can't find anything. That's a much better idea. Oh, I see. To find this "pinned topic", I needed to know go to the "Getting Started" forum - the "New to the game? Feel free to ask questions here. We're glad to help! Forum Led by: crashmore, Keystone Approver, mtn-man" instead of going to the "Geocaching Topics" forum. Since I'm not new to the game, I don't go into that forum. But that's ok. I then go to the "Read First! Geocaching Frequently Asked Questions" page and scroll down 28 posts to find the specified link. Yes, you're right Prime Suspect. That's completely intuitive, and you have every right to be sarcastic and abusive.
  22. Auuuugh!!!!!! Every time I try to bring up a cache page, I get this: Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. How long is this going to continue. Or more to the point - what steps are being take to alleviate this problem? I've heard that we're getting new servers, and that code is being moved to be more server-farm friendly. But, I've been experiencing problems with the website for the last six months (and I know that others have). Six months is an awfully long time to be experiencing server overload issues without corrective action being taken. I'm not saying that the corrective action should be instantaneous, but six months? Really. </rant> I feel better now... Kinda.
  23. Taking your lead, I went to: This link and searched for DPM. I then followed that up, and went to the GC knowledge base, and searched for DPM. Nada. I get this: ------- Your search - DPM - did not match any answers in our knowledge base. Please change your search terms and try again. Back to Browse ------- I guess that I'm saying - if I knew what the exact search term was, I'd be able to find what I already know is there. I guess. But, all I knew at the time of my original quest was DPM = lame cache. That's it. I didn't have any knowledge of "dead clams" or anything leading up to that. And the search engine for the forum is less than enlightening.
  24. Hey TPTB, My daughter and I were reporting a geocache when a very strange thing happened. It appeared to create the listing, but trying to view it is resulting in an error. It seems to be an R.I. issue where only part of the listing was stored. ---------------------- Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
