  1. Looks like a local geocacher in Oregon stumbled upon an IED in the dunes. Here is the article http://www.kcby.com/news/local/104280414.html
  2. I saw post on the Getting Started forum about what device you use for geocaching and I was wondering what was my first GPSr that I owned. Mine was a Magellan GPS2000. What was your first GPSr?
  3. My first GPSr was a Etrex Legend HCx.
  4. Also don't forget at least a 4gb micro SD card to hold additional maps.
  5. I would suggest you do some research, and decide on what type of caches are you wanting to hide. When I started hiding caches I liked micro's, but I am working on changing that and move to medium size caches because I want to start putting more swag in them. Also I want to get out and hike more and find interesting locations out in the woods to hide caches. Also look on the GCing maps and find places that don't already have a lot of caches.
  6. I love mine. I really like the ability to have everything I need to go geocaching in one unit. I would suggest getting a 4gb memory card for it. I have a 2gb memory card and I will be upgrading soon to hold all the maps I want to put on it.
  7. Get a job. I about spit Mtn. Dew on the screen. Nothing like stating the obvious
  8. Give some Plasma, or other bodily fulids.
  9. Current: Oregon 450 Nuvi 255W iPhone Previously Owned Legend HCx Vista HCx
  10. Amazon has it listed for $344. But you might be able to find it cheaper some where else.
  11. I have an Oregon 450 and performs great in the woods. I use it for geocaching as well as marking hunting locations.
  12. I manage my hunting waypoints with Mapsource but every since I went to 3.80 I am unable to download waypoint from my GPS into Mapsource. I can browse to the folder where they are at and save the file to my desktop and then open them up in Mapsource and then I can re-upload them to my GPS just fine from Mapsource. I can download tracks just fine. Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it.
  13. I am working on redesigning my PQ's and I was wondering what everyone else uses to help determine their radius so you don't get so much over lapping on your PQ's. I have tried a couple of web maps that will draw radius circles but they are hit and miss if they work or not.
  14. I updated my 450 the other day and today I noticed that the brown backround color on my free topos is now white. Anyone else had this problem?
  15. I have 5 of these out now and they have always stayed dry. It really depends on what type of glue/epox you use. I use some stuff made by Loctite, and they appear to be holding up pretty well:)
  16. I honestly haven't ran into another cacher while I have been hunting. I have seen where I have just missed them. I know that I will be going to one of my first events soon so I hope to meet some of the interesting people in my city and surrounding areas then.
  17. One other thing you might want to think about is if you have a smart phone with a GPS using that for a while. You can use them to find caches, but I would really use them to hide caches.
  18. What do you consider affordable? What is your budget?
  19. Is that to pistol whip the common sense back into them?
  20. If you would have only asked this question last week everyone would have told you to get the Garmin Oregon 450 from REI because it was on sale for $249.00. I used to have a Garmin Vista HCX and it was a very nice GPS, but if you could save up the money for an Oregon 450 and put some of the free topo maps you can get that would be what I would do.
  21. You do realize that GPSr are not just for geocaching. I use mine for a lot of things. I use it to mark hunting locations as well as for hiking trails. And I know I have needed to change out my batteries several times while out hiking or geocaching. I am glad that they take common AA batteries and not some nonstandard battteries.
  22. The Louisville Bomb Sqad is nice enough to help with an up coming event here in Louisville regarding geocaches. Here is a link to the local event. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...26-353563e5d54f
  23. Being vigilant is fine, but it won't save you should someone wish to do you harm. In many cases neither does a call to 911, especially if you're hunting off the beaten path. "Big tough guys" are good too, but they aren't bullet proof and a crazed meth-head isn't afraid of anyone. I'm not trying to scare anyone or anything like that, but people should know that it CAN happen to you - anytime, anywhere. The best way to make sure you are safe in any environment is to legally carry a handgun ( if your state allows) and get some training on it's proper use and safety. You should be mentally prepared to defend your life, and know and abide by the laws in your state regarding the carry of a weapon. If you can't or won't carry a firearm, then pepper spray is the next best thing. I recommend one with multiple bursts. All thins considered, getting a little on you and having an asthma attack would probably not be the worst thing that could happen should some low-life want to do you harm. In my family, we prefer Glock's. These days, trouble can happen anywhere - and bad guys don't make appointments. I agree Owljones, I carry a firearm when possible. In my state there are parks/forests that I am not allowed to carry a firearm, and in those cases I always have a pretty good size knife with me. If you are not comfortable carrying a firearm, you could always check into getting a stun gun or taser. Stun guns you have to be pretty close to use on someone, but a taser you can put some distance between you and your attacker. If you are comfortable carring a firearm and are looking for a small handgun. I would suggest the Ruger LCP or Keltec P-3AT.
  24. I love my Oregon 450. I love having all my geocaching and hunting info in one small unit.
  25. I started a blog as a way for my family and friends to check out what I have been doing. I try to keep it updated as mush as possible. Its a great way to document you adventures. Here is a link to mine. Kywaterfowler's GeoBlog
