I'll get the photo. It for sure does not have a year (or anything else) stamped on it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to post that 4 times... The server wasn't responding right.

A friend of mine who goes to school up in Alaska was poking around some drawers in a science classroom and ran across an old mark, he didn't have a photo of it, but he described it to me, and the way he described it, it's definitely a triangulation station, it's U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, and it's stamped "ASTRONOMIC"
But that is all I know. I'm trying to figure out what mark it is. It may not have even come from Alaska for all I know. I thought it may be UW4620 or UW4190 but then the stamping on those only contains "ASTRONOMIC" and then also other stuff, but not just that. I can't find anything that has just that. I might be able to get a picture, but it would take a couple days.
Any ideas?

Some who visit this forum may find the article interesting
Yes, I found it interesting. However I wish they had a high-resolution version on their site, that little one is barely visible.

$74 seems a bit pricy.
I've always wanted a survey marker sign but they only sell them in quantities of 20
Yes, that does seem a little pricey, especially for something you're not even supposed to have.
I found a sign like that once. Outside of my town, there's a BM that I know of, with a Carsonite Witness Post, with the NOAA logo, just like that one, pointing the mark out, I always look at it from the road when I go by, and I also placed a geocache next to it. Well, one day, I was checking on the geocache, and noticed that the Witness Post had been replaced with an identical brand new one, and that the old one was just sitting on the ground next to it. It wasn't even in that bad of condition.
Then, there's also this sign here. But I've seen replica signs like that, also on ebay, and for a lot cheaper, I have one of those too.

There's one on eBay right now, it's http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Brass-Geological-Survey-Bench-Mark-Marker-1950-/121217433469?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c391f3f7d
It has 10 watchers. I know it's USGS and not NGS, but I halfheartedly tried to find it in the database, and could not.

Of course! There aren't any EC birthday events on the west coast. Why would there be?
-
Isn't this thing only on Monday, and don't events need to be listed like 30 days ahead of time?
-
I only found out about this today. Too bad there's not an event anywhere near me. But I too have wondered if there would be a Souvenir Graphic, it really seems like the kind of thing they would do, and then if so, would it only be for attending an event, or anyone making a find on that day.
I'll be making a find on that day anyhow.

That link to that other topic actually did help. As suggested in that thread, I turned off WAAS and that fixed it. Everything else was already set the way suggested.
But I don't understand just why that made any difference, because I know what WAAS is and how it works, so this just confirms for me what I already guessed, this is a software bug.
At any rate, it works now. I used it all day.
This thing uses like 3 times the battery that my old 60CSx used.

I had the same problem, and of those settings listed, only WAAS turned on was set anyhow, but disabling that has fixed it. Confirming what I thought, that this is a software bug.
Thanks

So, I was Geocaching earlier today with my kinda new Oregon 450, and the compass failed. It would sometimes freeze, and then maybe a minute later unfreeze for a few seconds, then freeze again. Also, sometimes the red arrow on the compass would disappear and come back, but the rest of it stayed. Even when it was not frozen, it was not even close to pointing in the right direction, so I had to use my iPhone, but I got the Oregon so that I wouldn't have to do that. My iPhone compass was much more accurate, never freezing, fluid motion with me, as it should be.
Anyone ever seen this before, maybe know a fix?
Did you calibrate the compass? This needs to be done occasionally, sometimes after each battery change depending on the type of batteries used.
Also, maybe check that your firmware is up to date.
Yeah, I did all the software and firmware upates a while ago, possibly the very first thing I did when I took it out of the box.

Yeah, I can do that. I use PDF24, it has a nice Fax gateway, and also a bunch of other features.

I suppose. But he's a fellow Geocacher, and so am I, and so through the website just seems appropriate. However if emailing him the info is the only way, then I'll do it.

I have a puzzle that I am trying to place, and I want to have an out of town friend beta test the puzzle for me first, but since he can't see the listing because it isn't published, how does he do it?
thanks

Got it. Ok thanks

What is the biggest size microSD card an Oregon 450 can handle?
thanks
-
Yeah, it was new. I don't know how well I like it yet. But it does so many things, it's hard not to.
-
Thanks
I got it at Cabelas, for $149

I JUST got an Oregon 450, after the big sale at ******* I couldn't pass it up, even though this model is 5 years old at this point.
So, first thing I did was run WebUpdater, and it found version 6.40 of the software for it available. I think I remember when I was researching this unit, that some versions of the software are to be avoided. Is this one of them? What do people think of it? The unit seems to work fine now...
thanks

I used to know how, but have forgotten. Would somebody remind me how to search for a mark by the stamping information?
thanks

I didn't think that Groundpeak even looked at the benchmark logs. But I guess they do.
-
It's USGS, and most of theirs aren't in the database. For the most part (but with some exceptions), only ones from National Geodetic Survey are listed in the database.
Help me identify this mark

Hmm, that fits. The station would definitely be destroyed, since the mark is actually in the back of a classroom somewhere in Fairbanks.
