  1. I'm told Vista is freekishly slow installing for some reason. I intend (as soon as I get a chance) to write my own installer (if there are any programmers reading who'd like to help, feel free to PM me or whatever). It can take several hours to install... If you're still having trouble, you can copy the \program files\topomaps directory to your Vista machine, and then download http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/regfix.reg, edit it with the appropriate paths (no edits required if you install to c:\program files\topomaps\) and add it to the registry. Dale Thanks Dale. I think I'll wait for the re-write of the installer as I can work with the XP machine to install maps etc. for now. BTW, thanks for all your hard work so far! Any plans to fill in ON segments? In particular, the 9 segments from around Parry Sound to Killarney - sorry I don't know the tile #s. Ted.
  2. Maps work great on a couple of computers I have that run XP, but the newest machine with Vista won't install for some reason. Anyone else having trouble with this? I've tried a few times now.
  3. I have the same animation on my iQue - "searching for satellites", until it gets enough signal to navigate by.
  4. I stand by my comment. You didn't "fix" anything. You only seem to want to antagonize others for not agreeing with Groundspeak. And since you asked, no, I don't need anything else from you.
  5. Sure, i'll have a large fry and a medium coke Since you have nothing useful to add on this thread and just seem to want to stir things up, please refrain from further posts.
  6. Thankfully, you're not. BTW, they DO get frost in Florida once in a while.
  7. Hey, I have a real crappy cache that nobody likes that centres on a National Historic Site and I have a link to the site as well. They charge a fee to enter the museum so it must be commercial. Do I need to remove that link? Please let me know as I don't want to be violating any rules.
  8. Regarding the log deletions on the cache page, I really don't understand why, especially after the infamous "Bite me" log of Couparangus on After the Goldrush.
  9. Woo Hoo!! Congrats Mike! Happy 2000th and Happy 40th!
  10. I, too, agree that there is no place for commercial involvement in geocaching. The link that Brendan provided on the event cache page was put there simply to provide attendees with a courtesy to a preview of what will be available for a meal that evening. I appreciated being able to browse the menu in advance. In my opinion, naming the restaurant is more of a commercial benefit than anything else. This doesn't even come close to the commercialism of the NOGPS caches which seem to have been given carte blanche.
  11. Sadly, most cache's trade items degrade in quality over time - it's almost inevitable. "Took awesome flashlight, left used golfball. Thanks!" The best stocked caches are the newest ones. I stopped trading items long ago, as have many avid cachers. There is an initial appeal to the trade items, but as you rack up the caches, the reward seems to become the find, hike, location, rather than the treasure.
  12. I usually have a tough time feeling comfortable while skulking around in high visibity areas, but my best "blending in" happens when I'm searching for a lamppost micro in my work clothes and truck. Unfortunately, I usually happen across these on the weekend when I'm not blending in.
  13. Animal, vegetable, mineral or unkown?
  14. You assume correctly BQ. Mike (M3J) did a nice job getting a foot in the door with the Laurel Creek superintendent. I offered to tag along as the OGA rep for Waterloo Region. The supt. seemed familiar with geocaching and didn't have any problem with the idea in general. As we discussed issues like placing caches close to the trails and staying away from any environmentally sensitive areas (there are some wetlands here) he seemed quite comfortable with having a few caches here. Other stipulations were to make people aware of the entry fees for the park, hours of operation, and to stay off the groomed cross-country ski trails in the winter. I printed up some OGA geocaching brochures as well as the application forms and geocaching policies of the Hamilton and Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authorities and left them with him so he could see what has worked in other areas. He seemed interested in those and I wouldn't doubt if they come up with a similar plan. As Mike mentioned, it will likely begin with us placing some loggable caches (3 or 4) for the OktoberCache event. It's looking very positive that this will all work out. Big thanks to M3J for getting the ball rolling with the GRCA!
  15. Exactamundo Landsharkz! Take it away.
  16. Some good, some amusing guesses! Here's a hint: The tracklog is 1.2km long and took 33 minutes.
  17. Wow, I haven't been able to come up with an answer to a question here for a long time! Thanks CA! Here's my question: What was I doing, specifically, (walking, driving don't count as answers) to create this track?
  18. I'm posting this Earthcache topic in the Canadian section as I have noticed a bunch of new ones in Ontario over the last couple of months. I used to think Earthcaches were cool. They've brought me to places like the Cheltenham Badlands, the Sifton Bog, Niagara Falls, the Devil's Punchbowl, the Niagara Escarpment. I really enjoyed visiting these unique and interesting places. Lately, in my own area, I've been brought to an Earthcache in a parking lot where large rocks have been strategically placed by man, another at a bend in a river...ho hum. These local earthcaches were "placed" by cachers not even from the area. I did these caches and emailed my answers to the specific questions asked, without so much as a reply as to whether or not I had the correct answers. Just for $#!+$ and giggles, I googled some of the cache descriptions of the Earthcaches placed by these cachers and found them to be simply cut and pasted from Wikipedia or other sites. It seems that anyone can place an Earthcache anywhere on the planet, without even visiting the site, forget about replying to the requirements they have set out in the cache description, and never have to worry about maintenance. For me, Earthcaches have leapt up several notches on the lameness factor. What's your take?
  19. I'd love to see the snake pit! I agree with the idea of placing the cache far enough away for the comfort of those that don't like to get up close and personal with herps, and post additional co-ords for those of us who would like a gander. But hey, it's your cache and not all caches are meant for all people. If you place it 3 feet from the pit, I'm still a-goin'!
  20. Well, I guess we creep it up 10m at a time now. I'll say 121m.
  21. It's somewhat surprising that you were on a geocaching adventure and yet have logged no finds. Are you affiliated with the store by any chance?
  22. Didn't think so either. Not even a cacher yet - no finds, no placements.
  23. Looks like some people in our area saw it too - made our paper, The Record.
