  1. I am having trouble downloading my waypoints to my GPS. It's a Magellan 210, (not the top of the line I know but good for a beginner) I have had to change my computer because the old one died and now I have Windows Vista. The computer recognises that I have a removable device connected, and I can download the waypoints to the Magellan Geocache Manager, but when I try to download to the GPS I get a message saying that the program can't find the Magellan device. It is turned on, and it's plugged in. I have even searched for updated drivers but I get the message saying that all drivers are up to date for this device. The strange thing is that I was having this problem last week and then I went to Ontario for the weekend and my son was able to download waypoints from his computer onto my GPS but now I am back home I am having the same trouble. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.....#1Ranger
  2. I just got back from a trip to Ontario and found my first FTF which was 2,640 km from my home coordinates, although it was 3,400 km when I drove here to Calgary.
  3. I am fairly new to geocaching, (only 23 found so far) and I have realised that I am missing out on some of the events going on in the area. I know there's information on the newsletter we get every week, but due to the fact I do full time shift work I am not always available to attend. I am wondering if there's a list of all upcoming events...say for the next 6 months or so.. just in the Calgary area so that I can arrange my shift schedule accordingly. I am hoping to meet some of the local geocachers who may be looking for a partner to geocache with. I don't like going by myself and there's not always a family member available to go out when I have the spare time.
  4. I actually live in the northwest of Calgary, and the day I do fly to Ontario it will be at 7 in the morning. I'll get to those stores though. I have lots of time. I checked their websites but I'm going to leave it for a couple of weeks as everything I want to buy is either out of stock or discontinued. Thanks everyone for the information
  5. I don't think I would have time as I arrive the day before and leave the day after. I want to get some geocaching loot for my son, as it will be his 40th birthday and he's addicted to geocaching. He got me into the hobby too. If I can buy it here before I go to Ontario, then I can have it all wrapped up with a bow on top too, ready to give to him (Hope he's not reading this )

    Retail outlets

I'm sure all of you experts out there can help me out. Where can I go in Calgary to buy geocaching gear....coins or travel bugs, tee-shirts or hats etc? Anything in the northwest of the city would be helpful...Thanks.
  7. Are you sure you found the log book for the cache, and not some other paper? I'm puzzled because you mentioned the cache "had been opened and scattered," and "a few items scattered in the same area," as though they were items from the cache, but a bison tube typically has no room for anything other than the log. Oops...Bison tube might be the wrong way to describe this cache. On the page it is described this way The container is small to regular size plastic tube type, painted camo. It contains a log book and pen as well as several small items. I know it was the log book I found as we looked at some previous entries and I recognised some of the names of local geocachers.
  8. I think I'll have to go back and sign the log book first before logging on the web as a find. We were so upset to see the state of this cache that we just forgot to write anything down. I made a note of the coordinates and took a picture of that location to send to the owner, so they could fix it up again, but I haven't heard back yet
  9. I found a cache today that had been opened and scattered. It was the log book I saw first, with a few items scattered in the same area, but none of it was where it should have been. It was supposed to be inside a camoe'd bison tube, but unfortunately there was no sign of that. I logged it as needing maintenance, and wrote a longer explanation to the cache owner, but I didn't get credit for finding the cache. Is this the norm?
  10. I am wondering too about some items I have that I would like to leave in caches. They are plastic letter openers which I purchased to give as gifts, a couple of years ago, during my time working with Welcome Wagon, so they have the WW logo on them. Would anyone take offense if I left one of these in each cache?

    tools

I am still fairly new to geocaching, but I don't have much success in locating caches that are camoe'd and under leaves and twigs. I am just wondering what kind of tools you all use to help you locate these caches. I try to find a stick and dig away around the bases of trees. I look for trees where the leaves may have already been disturbed but everything looks like its been there forever so there's no clues that way. Any hints please? #1Ranger
  12. Hi, I sent you an e-mail with the event. Good Luck! Thanks everyone. I am registered now and looking forward to the event.
  13. I am going to visit my son in Ontario on May 23rd, and I know there is a geocaching event on May 24th near Barrie, Ontario on May 24th. My son has already registered himself and his family but I would like to register too, but I can't find the website. Please help.
  14. I work an eight hour day as a cashier in a local supermarket. I would do more geocaching except all I want to do is sit with my feet up after a full day at work. I sure look forward to my days off when I can catch up with laundry and housework etc, which takes even more time away from my favourite new hobby. When I do get the chance to geocache it is helping me appreciate all the wonderful and beautiful areas of Calgary which were not so obvious when I first moved here just 18 months ago.
  15. Hmmmmmmmm......... that's how they always show up for me. Newest posts first. Ranger may mean so inside the threads show the latest post on top and as you scroll down they progressively age Yes...exactly :-)
  16. Is there a way of changing the order in which the messages appear? I would like the latest posts to be at the top instead of having to go through pages and pages to find the latest posting on a particular thread. I looked through the options but didn't see anywhere I could change it. Thanks.... #1Ranger

    Google Earth

Yes I am a Premium member as of one week ago. I haven't figured out how to use "Caches along a Route" yet. I take it Google Earth is needed for this feature

  20. For all those people who have had this problem on their computer, I just want to let you know that I read all your postings and decided that it was something to do with Norton 360. So I have uninstalled Norton, and installed the anti-virus programme from my Internet provider, and now I can move the Google map, zoom in and out, with no problems, just as I used to before. I don't have any concerns with this anti-virus prgramme as I used it on my old computer before it died, but wanted to give the trial version of Norton 360 a try before installing the full programme. I won't be bothering with the Norton after all. I hope this helps...#1Ranger
  21. Is there a particular update to download? I just ran a live update and everything is up-to-date, and nothing new needed to be downloaded. Can you remember the name of the other thread connected to this subject. Thanks ...
  22. I have had to get a new computer which has Vista as the operating system. With my old computer I used to be able to click on the map showing the location of the cache and it would open up a Google map and all of the nearby caches would be indicated. I could move the map around with my mouse, zoom in and out etc. Now with this new Vista I get the following error message when I try to do something with the Google map "EO Web Controls Client Side Debug Message. An Error occured while applying new ouput. Eroor message: Failed. You can turn off this message by setting EO.Web Runtime.DebugLevel to 0. (Not recommended for Debug level) Can anybody help me? I don't get this error message if I do regular searches through Google maps when looking for driving diections. Thanks..#1Ranger.
  23. I'll be waiting for the friendly lackeys. Thanks for your info...
  24. "There may be more replies to this topic, but only 1 email is sent per board visit for each subscribed topic. This is to limit the amount of mail that is sent to your inbox." If you don't visit the forums, the email notices will stop, even if there are more replies. Thank you...very helpful
  25. I am wondering why I am not getting replies to my postings by email even though I have checked off that option? Thanks...
